@lillnemo1 I don't see how worse could it be than being hit with a 1500kg car at 60km/h but still it kid of makes sense. I think I heard somewhere that mercedes modified their emblem back then for the same reason.

@DirtyStang69 It's a bitch. On the 1st gen's, the buzzer is mounted on the back of the instrument panel so you have to pull the whole thing out and physically damage either the circuitry or the speaker to get it to shut up. No amount of fuse pulling will solve the problem.

@willymywonka Annoying?! Not a chance. That rotary engine is unique. You drive the car more like a motorcycle with the extra RPM's. You keep that engine singing and your flying...
@willymywonka LOL I didn't say it was a motorcycle engine; it revs higher because of the design so you can hold gears longer and you've got more flexibility as to when to shift. These are all advantages for a performance car. This is part of the reason F1 cars rev so high. Rotary engine is a stroke of genius.
@willymywonka rotarys have tourqe, jus not in low rpms like your piston engine, the tourqe in my rx7 starts at 3 grand and goes thru o about 5 or 6,nd you should really look into it,theyre truely amazing
funny thing is, he says something about people giving their eyeteeth to drive these cars.. and now most of these cars have found their ways into the backyards and trailer parks of whos owners lack eyeteeth, or any teeth for that matter. haha not bashing but there are tons of these cars sitting all over the place
Mazda made the right decision by making the 3rd gen RX-7 more focused but by then, the world had moved on. Of course, their '90s cars were also wonderfu,. but they kept the most convincing cars away from the US. I wonder what will happen to them now, without Ford's money.
Not the best idea though, not without replacing the apex seals, switching to 3mm seals, and switching out the main bearings with race bearings. Otherwise yes, it'll go to 8000 without to much trouble, sustaining it is a pretty bad idea though.
Actually he was shifting at 5000 RPM, losing considerable grunt that the RX7 develops at higher RPM. Additionally thats the N/A version, nonturbo, and I can say for a fact, owning the same car, that my shift warning comes at 6500, and the car will more than happily go up to 8000 RPM without a problem. (Though the unnessisary buzzing noise from the shift warning causes some undue distress.)
@DivineWindSerpent couldnt have said it better myself, just got an 88 n/a for 300 bucks with only 101k miles on it:) cant wait till next summer to try it out.
the apex seals go if you abuse it. keep the oil fresh and keep the level up and especially the na rotaries will last forever. my fb has 210k miles on it and runs great. my fd on the other hand was previously owned by an idiot that did a bunch of upgrades without having it tuned correctly. after the turbos blew up (turbine surge caused by improperly routed vacuum lines) i had it rebuilt and found the housings were cracked. it's all in how it's taken care of.
@g7dude9 That would be apex seals and they blow, but that just meens rebuild time and more fun. You dont just replace them , you rebuild the whole block
having driven both extensively, I would say that the Porsche looks and drive better, but the Mazda is cheaper to own. both are better in the turbo configuration.
Amazing. The modern Miata has more horsepower than either of these venerable marks (167), is faster to 60 (7.7), and has a higher top speed (141). I really wouldn't have expected that. I guess we do live in the new golden age of the automobile.
@Miata822 - These are bottom of the range cars from the 80's.. the 944S of the same year has 190hp, I have one of those. The modern equivalent of the 924 has 255 horsepower (standard boxster), and the modern equivalent of the RX-7 has 220hp (RX-8).. the Miata i currently have has 90hp (1.6L), and the most powerful Miata ever made was 174hp (2005 Mazdaspeed). While the cars in this video are now classics, the Miata will never be comparable to modern sports cars in terms of performance.
@DThaeman No argument from me there. I was just taken aback that these cars, admired not that long ago, were so much slower than the slowest sports car made today. The RX-8 is no longer really in that class but the Nissan 370Z certainly is.
Of course, at the other end of the price scale the power gains have been unbelievable.
@Miata822 Oh yeah, it's unbelievable how there are no real secrets anymore to getting power and handling out of a car.. if only the U.S. tried a little harder at making good cars, I wouldnt have to turn to the Germans and the Japanese for my thrills!
nah a stock one that year lets u go upto 8000 and ull hear the horn so it will pull until 6500 thats how the stock esu is tuned in later years 88-91 u can go 9000 and pul till 8500

@liquidcrystal402 "give their eye teeth" it's an expression that means you would do anything. don't ask me where it comes from though, i'll leave that research up to you...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i find the very fact that they are comparing the porsche to a nothing car which is blatently a rip off of the porsche. Japenese cars have no credit its all borrowed stolen. as such they have no brand and no heritage. Mazda dont they make fridge freezers?
roflmao... well if it was twice, your calc will tell you: 2*1.3=2.6 and not 2.3l, but thats the wrong way of thinking.
cause both rotors whit each 3 burningcambers(if thats the right word) has a displacement of 654cc (in case of the 1.3l) so like i said before 2*.654cc=1308cc.
So my question again: Why do they say 2354cc?
and ill end whit the tip of the day: You should use google before giving dumb answers.
Ok, let's just get few things straight before we begin: burningcambers? whit? Jus? explane? Secondly, I don't know...I was just offering a suggestion. If you want to be Captain anal about the figures, write to: Top Gear, C/- 1991, The Past, Ages Ago, Yesteryear 8024.
At top gear (fifth gear i mean), the mazda rx7 turbo 2 starts flying like a jet. Plus with lower centre of gravity you get amazing handling that kills the porsche.
between the two of them, i would rather have the porsche, the reason behind coupé's is looks and image, so the reasonable choice is the porsche, if you bought the mazda and the porsche pulled along side you, you would know you bought the wrong car.
porsche also has the better interior , which is also very important in a coupe, the mazda looks like some cheap 70's house, porsche has style
typical bull coming from a kid who's never driven a rotary.
I have this very model of RX-7, which my parents hate because they're a family of Porsche enthusiasts. 928-S, 944 Turbo, and 924-S. I've driven all three of those, and in the corners they don't handle anywhere near as well as the RX-7. They'd beat it in a straight line, but the rotary is much smaller and simpler, it's much easier to tune. I've had mine tuned only mildly, and it slaughters the Porsches.
Also: You have your van engine if you want. There's a reason so many people love RX-7s - because they've actually driven one and know how good it is! I've been brought up with Porsches, and even driven a 911 Turbo at Donington circuit. I'll admit they're nicer to sit in, but performance? RX-7 any day.
how can that mazda rip off nothing sit beside a throughbread porsche and be compared. this is demoaralising to the porsche theses only 1 car in this clip
at 4:35 isnt it weird how the rpm is at 6k and then it switches to the person about to shift gear to fifth the rpm is at 5k... can anyone decribe this to me im confuse
I bought this particular model a couple of months ago (in blue), mildly tuned to 200bhp. It's absolutely brilliant and the engine is actually simpler to work on than a lot of piston engines IMO.
Who cares, if you own the car, are you going to sit in the back.
I know how little space there is in the back but if my passengers don't like the leg room (on the odd occassion that i carry any other than my wife, it is the w/end warrior after all). they don't have to come for the ride.
There is alot more body-roll in the Porsche, and the 924 is the one with the VW-Van engine isn't it? The Mazda looks flat and levelled whilst cornering... The FC does look kinda copy-paste though especially from the rear 3/4...
After seeing this, I'm realizing that I haven't seen cars with retractable light in like 20 years. Do they make these lamps anymore?

@liquidcrystal402 "give their eye teeth" it's an expression that means you would do anything. don't ask me where it comes from though, i'll leave that research up to you...
DILLIGAFFUM 2 years ago
I'm pretty sure it's "give their eye teeth." It's an expression not used very often in the States.

i find the very fact that they are comparing the porsche to a nothing car which is blatently a rip off of the porsche. Japenese cars have no credit its all borrowed stolen. as such they have no brand and no heritage. Mazda dont they make fridge freezers?

2354 cc in a 1.3 rotary?
Sj1bby 2 years ago
@Sj1bby They fire twice as often so you can kinda say they're equivalent to twice the size. It's a bit of a con really.
mattblack77nz 2 years ago
roflmao... well if it was twice, your calc will tell you: 2*1.3=2.6 and not 2.3l, but thats the wrong way of thinking.
cause both rotors whit each 3 burningcambers(if thats the right word) has a displacement of 654cc (in case of the 1.3l) so like i said before 2*.654cc=1308cc.
So my question again: Why do they say 2354cc?
and ill end whit the tip of the day: You should use google before giving dumb answers.
Jus sayin

Drivetrain losses, numbnuts.
mattblack77nz 2 years ago

ow, im sorry i didnt know you would get mad over me knowing more than you. and i am sorry i aint a aussie, so i dont know english as well as you.

Wow! The classic RX with stock spoiler.
At top gear (fifth gear i mean), the mazda rx7 turbo 2 starts flying like a jet. Plus with lower centre of gravity you get amazing handling that kills the porsche.

the apex seals can go bad easily. the porsche is sturdy.
12valvepower1 2 years ago
@12valvepower1 porsche sturdy? have you ever owned one? you need at least 2 porsches to drive on when the other one breaks.
xbartosx 2 years ago
between the two of them, i would rather have the porsche, the reason behind coupé's is looks and image, so the reasonable choice is the porsche, if you bought the mazda and the porsche pulled along side you, you would know you bought the wrong car.
porsche also has the better interior , which is also very important in a coupe, the mazda looks like some cheap 70's house, porsche has style

id sooner have a vw van eninge than a wanker engine
paulhunter123 2 years ago
typical bull coming from a kid who's never driven a rotary.
I've had mine tuned only mildly, and it slaughters the Porsches.
kidgoku666 2 years ago 21
@kidgoku666
vankel sucks :D
Mastermind12358 1 year ago
@kidgoku666 Depends which Porsche's you're "racing"... the 911 has always been top notch.
22j77 1 year ago
Also: You have your van engine if you want. There's a reason so many people love RX-7s - because they've actually driven one and know how good it is! I've been brought up with Porsches, and even driven a 911 Turbo at Donington circuit. I'll admit they're nicer to sit in, but performance? RX-7 any day.
kidgoku666 2 years ago 4
'van engine' it uses a detuned engine from the 944, why do so many people take what clarkson says as the gospel truth.
from the look of that car revving in a flat car park it seems you have been brought up more in fords and vauxhalls than porsches.
Buttmunch5000 2 years ago
i like the old 4 cyl porsches. the 924s is a great car. one i like alot. though the rx7 is wonderful. i love rotaries

I bought this particular model a couple of months ago (in blue), mildly tuned to 200bhp. It's absolutely brilliant and the engine is actually simpler to work on than a lot of piston engines IMO.
kidgoku666 2 years ago
too bad the rx7 isnt a turbo in this one

"But really, the back seats would only seat legless dwarfs." Word. lol
trianglepower 2 years ago
Who cares, if you own the car, are you going to sit in the back.
I know how little space there is in the back but if my passengers don't like the leg room (on the odd occassion that i carry any other than my wife, it is the w/end warrior after all). they don't have to come for the ride.

i can see my oil gauge but this is an awesome review tho the rx7 looks just like mine lol i really wish i could get a chance to drive a turbo
rx7guy21 2 years ago
If you get the chance to drive the turbo do it, it's worth the chance.
Its worth it. Believe me.
My FC rx7 has 300hp atw with the most minor of mods.
It howls along nicely and suprises many.
What is amazing is how easy it is to screw power out of the turbo model with such simple mods.
Mine still turns heads, no problem (I'm, sure you know what I mean) despite the fact that it is near 22yrs old.
has been cared for though.
As for the 2354ccs. What a load of shit.
blyndrotor 2 years ago
mazda the best
mesikamoto 2 years ago 2
There is alot more body-roll in the Porsche, and the 924 is the one with the VW-Van engine isn't it? The Mazda looks flat and levelled whilst cornering... The FC does look kinda copy-paste though especially from the rear 3/4...
keanehgz 2 years ago
the 924 actually uses an audi engine, dont believe everything jeremy says :p
jorikrademakers 2 years ago
im not sure about back then, but it seems these days that audi and vw are one and the same
scottdeshon 2 years ago
The 924s which is the one he uses in this review uses the same 2.5 liter Porsche engine that the 944 uses. The earlier 924 used an audi engine.
