Loved this video. Ahhh, the sweet roar of a datacenter! :)
Here it is nearly four years later, I imagine the majority of those single servers can be replaced by just a couple of 2x quad core (say, Dell R710) running VMWare. Interesting how technology changes!
I work in a Dc and the dell 42 and 47u racks are really not that big i mean they are like between 6 and 6' 3". I also have a 42u dell rack in my office now thats a bit over kill but how many people can say that lol
Tell Google that... they have an entire hour plus documentary on their data center. We just had a video crew at our data center also. It's basically a cock measuring contest nowadays.
@Lakis69: It says, that she doesn't know what she's talking about.
I work now for the last 15 years in DC's all over the world. And I'm telling you; I know that she didn't, look at her the way she moves, she talks, she edit the audio of this video, how she turns the webcam with her laptop, the fact that she even makes this movie inside a DC!
Can't really make out what she saying most of the time, but that's OK: hottie geek girl showing me her "baby" that is a server room: I'm in heaven already...
It's hard for geeks like me to find girls like her..i don't see any geek girls out there...it's RARE. Take a careful look out there and you will know what i was elucidating. I hope i make this a lucid explanation. (Luke,i am your father)
Pretty typical look for a public colocation facility. Nice presentation.
Be careful recording this sort of thing. Most hosting companies have strict contract terms that exclude the use cameras and audio recording equipment in the datacenter. You could even be banned from the facility in some cases.
Cool video. I worked at 4 Data Centers in my life back before Servers when Big "Mainframes" Ran the show like IBM ES/9000 Systems and a few HP Systems. but I do not miss the hours of siting in a very cold room checking Programs and stuff. back in the 1990's. :)
I used to be a field technician and been in plenty of data centers and looks about right. When we built our uplink our anal engineers had every cable labeled, ziptied, and plenty of room in our maintenance loops. Those were the good ol days.
Hmm, I dont know. I think the cable staff is a mess. But if it isnt a big server room, its ok. With 22 colleagues we manage 2400 servers so I never do the cable staff like this.
Is that is you call a reasonable cabling work?????what d @#!W#!#$!.Cany you even you a cable tie and neatly parked at the side?cable arm is totally bullshit as it doesnot fit to be even nice but damaging my servers in long blasting blocked up hot air and caused a bloody short cycling in my racks......Lol.RasFM

Nice video. Cool data center. Good equipment. The cable management stinks, it stinks so bad I can smell it from here (sniff-sniff) P-U! Let me know if you need some help with the cable next time. Zip-ties, straight edged snippers, and a p-touch... =]
Companies do not care just as long as it works. But yes I agree with you but your way means 1,000 plastic tie down and will be a real pain to remove and tells me someone had extreme OCD when wiring up those servers.
I don't see alot of females in IT which sucks and the ones I do see are like 5-20 years older than me. Anywho I do believe that you would be a good roll model for young women to take the step into IT or CS. I'm not saying this because I would be nice to date a girl in IT but because alot of women that I know aren't into technology or automotive which are two good fields to get into. I do believe that women have alot of potential and IT is another way for them to go. You have a nice smile btw.
it is a cabinet not a cage, the cage is the fenced off area behind you : ) and maybe you designed the layout of the cabinet but not the datacenter itself. Also remember that Panduit is your friend LOL :p non the less cool setup.
that is alot of servers for hosting web sites... one dell 1950 should be able to do that. I am assuming with that many servers for hosting you have load balancing between app and DB servers? what do you do exactly?
I didn't just design the layout of the cabinet, I spec'd and purchased the cabinets. I designed the orientation of the cabinets inside the cage. I designed in extra space for a folding table and chairs as well as cables, etc. Once I did that layout other new tenants started copying my design which was a departure from the traditional design that was previously in use. So that means that I have designed the cage.
you are using cabinets INSIDE of a cage? might I ask why? and what do you do exactly for a living? I am not trying to come across as an ass in anyway, (internet sucks for conveying tone of voice) just curious because I actually work for a few datacenters.
I'm surprised the reseller didn't throw in a pair of steps with that 47U rack though!! For me it wouldn't be much taller than our existing 42's, but you must be quite short as it looks towering!
How's life looking after those beasts and what model servers are they?

So...you rented out a couple of square feet in some generic datacenter to run your "webhosting" service for married women trying to sell afghans and homemade chocolate chip cookies while you run ethernet cables like Silly-String? What a glorious service you've done for IT women everywhere....

In my opinion, the spaghetti part is the prettiest part (but I do like to see the blinking light as well).
Nothing better than a dark room with blinking lights, the occasional beep, the sound of a few (quiet) fans and the soft, warm glow of a monitor. That's where I do most of my C/C++ socket programming in the early hours of the morning (when I'm thinking clearest!)
yea lol looking at the size of that room and looking at your little part then theres like al th rest of the room full lol thats like wow how many sites and game server and tuff there running wow!
If you are at all stressed out about global warming, you don't want to know just how much cooling it uses. Also, my little piece of heaven is small. Think how much cooling all the Google servers around the world need (maybe 10,000X what mine uses, possibly 100,000X, maybe more).
this is so cool thanks for sharing massive server over there hehe but when the quantum computers knock your door you will have one of those servers in your hair and there will be no need to learn or STUDY and way stronger servers like this in your pocket lol sounds crazy but they will do that FOR SURE
It would be interesting to pick her brain to see if she really is the real thing or not. I'm still a little skeptical...never met ANY girl that really knew her stuff as a geek. I mean I'm not askin much here, just for any girl to pull of the side of a tower and explain all the parts inside and how they interact and what they do? Never met one!
Fair enough. I used to build PCs (back in the 386 days). I started as a software loader at a computer store and worked my way up to builder and customizer of high end gaming PCs with blazing 56k modems! (ancient history) before becoming the general manager of the chain. I could still go to a store like Fry's electronics and buy off the shelf parts and build a computer if I had to. But the convenience of just having Dell come fix the hardware when its broken is so much more time efficient.
You should have made this your first video ever! Now, we all know what your really about! Can I have a poster of you in front of all those wires! Geek Girls ("Girks"?) make my day. ;}~ I want to marry you too, well, after your +5-10 life expectancy over the present guy, and, after that other guy, I'm next!
There are lots of great facilities, where you can lease space and build your network. The facility I am is close to my office and is a major hub. But you have to pick the facility that is a reasonable distance from you and that supports your business model. You don't say where you are located in your profile, so I can't point out good facilities for you to look into.
As I said before (prior post). We rent the floor space, and we buy power, and the building provides air. Everything else is ours, including the racks, routers, cage, etc. That is hardly the same as renting a rack. I am happy to hear what your IA guys want to call this, because I always am interested in what is industry standard language.
Agreed, and also how easy you can unrack a server if there is a problem. We used to have this beautiful cabling (picture perfect), but anytime anyone worked on anything, other systems would get their cables pulled and we were breaking network connections on the server. We unbundled it all and voila, end to the problems.
Ah the beauty of being an owner is that you get to do the cable management exactly the way that you think works best, and if you are right or wrong, you get to live with that decision. I have worked in some places where the investors tour the data center often enough so that everything had to look different than was practical. But I don't have that burden here. See a comment lower on the page were I talk about bundling.
Sorry. Some other guy got here first. I have been off the market for the last 2 years. So I guess that makes me Mrs. Geek now. But I figure the odds are I will out live him by about 5-10 years so if your still avail then, I will PM you. ;-)
I am always there virtually, rarely there in person. It is what you call a "lights out" data center. Most of the time it runs without anyone on site. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Its interesting to see how we all have our preferences. We went with Dell because we seem to get better onsite service. But in many ways, they could improve. Now we are sort of married to their platform since we use OpenManage (a back end system for seeing the console remotely), and its not currently possible to plug any other non dell products into that system. ARGH.
Actually that looks like the DC at the Dallas Informart. I've filmed in there and it might not get you fired but they will confiscate your camera and wipe the card. But if you were the only actual cute and smart chick in the entire world that would actually be IN a DC, they probably let you slide. :) Seriously, geek hot.
There are lot of male chauvinists on this site. I think it pretty remarkable you can face up to that much equipment! Quite an achievement. I guess it is easy for males to get a hurt ego. Women just do a job.
Thanks for the support. I don't usually remove bad posts, but I did remove some today. I am sure if I took my top off in this video, I would have more hits than Blendtec. Sad.
Hey, that looks like the ATT data center in hawthorne, ca. She is taking a huge risk video taping in that facility, since its forbidden. Doing what she did, can get you fired.
Sorry. When I was a kid I was in a tragic accident where I got run over by a girl scout on a bicycle who was riding on the sidewalk. I only suffered one injury but (a total loss of my sense of humor), and the transplant they gave me only works in one direction (I can make jokes but don't register other people's jokes as jokes). It is very sad. So again sorry I didn't get you were joking. Thanks for coming back to reply.
That data center is not bad compared to what I have been in. It's pretty well done, because ive seen places with more tangles in Fiber optics that it isn't even funny. Good Job!
those are really KOOL servers! Im really into this sorta stuff and would love to follow in your path!! Could I have any advice and tip on how to run a smallish web hosting company? Please PM me
Hmm, actually they may be KOOL, but they are anything but cool.... as all those fans, and the covers off of a hot one, attest. IBM just announced that they were going to replace 3,900 internally used servers with about 30 mainframes running Linux, and save enough energy to power a small town. See IBM press release dated Aug 1
Not to rain on anyone's parade here, bit she didn't build the datacenter while her credits say she did. She's taking credit away from people who 'actually' build datacenters. She mounted some servers (mind you DELL servers) in a couple of racks and did some basic cable management. She even points out other people's equipment more than likely meaning she's in a hosting facility/co-lo. Just trying to be clear here.
Point of clarification: The facility that we rent space in, provides power and air conditioning, the cage space, and an Ethernet handoff from our ISP who is in the building, and that is it. We own all our own networking gear. So yes, I still consider that I built this data center.
No I am not a real estate developer, but I have participated in taking raw office space and turning it into a data center, including adding our own air, generators, etc. But this time we decided to do it in someone else's real estate. And by the way, you are trying to rain on my parade otherwise you would have asked instead of asserted.
That's really cool. My company uses two datacenters to host email. What web company do you run? I understand if you want to keep it hush. You can PM me if you don't mind letting me know - I'd be interested to know how you enjoy the biz.
Thank you for the positive feedback. I checked out your profile. Not videos yet. If you post a video in the future, let me know, I promise to watch it.
w00t! While I don't have a data centre with shiny Dell servers, I'd still be eligible for membership of Geek Girls Anonymous. Or is that "g33k gURLz" maybe? Either way. Diamonds are not a girl's best friend, DiamondMaxs are! So to speak. :D (HDDs ftw!)
nice, reminds me of work.

imagine the cooling all those will need, jesus
tazerfire 4 years ago
If you are at all stressed out about global warming, you don't want to know just how much cooling it uses. Also, my little piece of heaven is small. Think how much cooling all the Google servers around the world need (maybe 10,000X what mine uses, possibly 100,000X, maybe more).
ExperimentsinHonesty 4 years ago
this is so cool thanks for sharing massive server over there hehe but when the quantum computers knock your door you will have one of those servers in your hair and there will be no need to learn or STUDY and way stronger servers like this in your pocket lol sounds crazy but they will do that FOR SURE

I ll shage her behind those noisy servers..

Never met one!
razorflown2 4 years ago
Fair enough. I used to build PCs (back in the 386 days). I started as a software loader at a computer store and worked my way up to builder and customizer of high end gaming PCs with blazing 56k modems! (ancient history) before becoming the general manager of the chain. I could still go to a store like Fry's electronics and buy off the shelf parts and build a computer if I had to. But the convenience of just having Dell come fix the hardware when its broken is so much more time efficient.
ExperimentsinHonesty 4 years ago
Whoa! So cool, so HOTT!

CharlietoKind 4 years ago
We do private label specialty web hosting.
ExperimentsinHonesty 4 years ago
As I said before (prior post). We rent the floor space, and we buy power, and the building provides air. Everything else is ours, including the racks, routers, cage, etc. That is hardly the same as renting a rack. I am happy to hear what your IA guys want to call this, because I always am interested in what is industry standard language.
ExperimentsinHonesty 4 years ago
fuck cable management, its all about how easy you can get a new cable in, all you bundle-cabling idiots suck.
fixinah 4 years ago
Agreed, and also how easy you can unrack a server if there is a problem. We used to have this beautiful cabling (picture perfect), but anytime anyone worked on anything, other systems would get their cables pulled and we were breaking network connections on the server. We unbundled it all and voila, end to the problems.
ExperimentsinHonesty 4 years ago
mm what kind of servers are those
Anhaedra 4 years ago
Dell, Network Engines, Cisco Networking, etc.

Marry me?
...then I'll show you cable management...haha.
The datacenter I'm in looks... WAY better and is a lot bigger, haha. If I cabled something like that I'd be shot.
DJNathanV 4 years ago
Ah the beauty of being an owner is that you get to do the cable management exactly the way that you think works best, and if you are right or wrong, you get to live with that decision. I have worked in some places where the investors tour the data center often enough so that everything had to look different than was practical. But I don't have that burden here. See a comment lower on the page were I talk about bundling.
ExperimentsinHonesty 4 years ago
So... you skipped the first question. ;)
DJNathanV 4 years ago
Sorry. Some other guy got here first. I have been off the market for the last 2 years. So I guess that makes me Mrs. Geek now. But I figure the odds are I will out live him by about 5-10 years so if your still avail then, I will PM you. ;-)

Brains & good looks... I love this world! Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed seeing where you spend a good part of your time.
thefluidic 4 years ago
I am always there virtually, rarely there in person. It is what you call a "lights out" data center. Most of the time it runs without anyone on site. Glad you enjoyed the video.
ExperimentsinHonesty 4 years ago
Too bad they are not IBM.
mgiambruno 4 years ago
Its interesting to see how we all have our preferences. We went with Dell because we seem to get better onsite service. But in many ways, they could improve. Now we are sort of married to their platform since we use OpenManage (a back end system for seeing the console remotely), and its not currently possible to plug any other non dell products into that system. ARGH.
ExperimentsinHonesty 4 years ago
Actually that looks like the DC at the Dallas Informart. I've filmed in there and it might not get you fired but they will confiscate your camera and wipe the card. But if you were the only actual cute and smart chick in the entire world that would actually be IN a DC, they probably let you slide. :) Seriously, geek hot.
spookydoo 4 years ago
It is not Dallas. Thanks for the compliment.
ExperimentsinHonesty 4 years ago
Actually, that datacenter looks sort of pitiful. If my cable management skills were as poor as hers, my ass would get fired.
dzr0001 4 years ago
See all the comments I have posted since yours came in, re cable management.
ExperimentsinHonesty 4 years ago
There are lot of male chauvinists on this site. I think it pretty remarkable you can face up to that much equipment! Quite an achievement. I guess it is easy for males to get a hurt ego. Women just do a job.

Thanks for the support. I don't usually remove bad posts, but I did remove some today. I am sure if I took my top off in this video, I would have more hits than Blendtec. Sad.

Hey, that looks like the ATT data center in hawthorne, ca. She is taking a huge risk video taping in that facility, since its forbidden. Doing what she did, can get you fired.

"Ive got extra large racks" LMFAO shes kinky w/ computers lol
But great place to work u got there
darknomad333 4 years ago
Why do you think its ok to post a sexual reference in response to my video? The racks are 48U vs the more standard 42U racks.
ExperimentsinHonesty 4 years ago
Sorry, I didn't mean it as an offense, I do some work in data centers and we have inside jokes like that, but i'm sorry that I offended you.
darknomad333 4 years ago
ExperimentsinHonesty 4 years ago
That data center is not bad compared to what I have been in. It's pretty well done, because ive seen places with more tangles in Fiber optics that it isn't even funny. Good Job!

those are really KOOL servers! Im really into this sorta stuff and would love to follow in your path!! Could I have any advice and tip on how to run a smallish web hosting company? Please PM me
jonnytcarryduff 4 years ago
Hmm, actually they may be KOOL, but they are anything but cool.... as all those fans, and the covers off of a hot one, attest. IBM just announced that they were going to replace 3,900 internally used servers with about 30 mainframes running Linux, and save enough energy to power a small town. See IBM press release dated Aug 1
rollerblader1a 4 years ago
Not to rain on anyone's parade here, bit she didn't build the datacenter while her credits say she did. She's taking credit away from people who 'actually' build datacenters. She mounted some servers (mind you DELL servers) in a couple of racks and did some basic cable management. She even points out other people's equipment more than likely meaning she's in a hosting facility/co-lo. Just trying to be clear here.
SixFacesofHanuman 4 years ago
Point of clarification: The facility that we rent space in, provides power and air conditioning, the cage space, and an Ethernet handoff from our ISP who is in the building, and that is it. We own all our own networking gear. So yes, I still consider that I built this data center.
ExperimentsinHonesty 4 years ago
No I am not a real estate developer, but I have participated in taking raw office space and turning it into a data center, including adding our own air, generators, etc. But this time we decided to do it in someone else's real estate. And by the way, you are trying to rain on my parade otherwise you would have asked instead of asserted.
