I had terrible bad luck with MAGNUM shot shells in my two Mossberg 590s.
Magnum slugs and buckshot, especially 3" magnums would cause the safety on the top of the receiver to engage. I had to switch back to "fire" for every repeat shot. I even once attempted to fire my 590 with the bayonet attached and with 3" mag 000 buck. The first shot caused the bayonet to fling violently off the muzzle.
...I live in the smokey mountains & Bear hunters are loosers....deer is one thing , but the bear population up here doesnt need thinning out....Plus you have dogs tree a bear then shoot it WOW pretty skill-full
I agree, you've just got to be use to the recoil. I started with a .22, went to a shotgun, then a .300 win mag, then a 375 h&h mag, then the elephant guns. I can handle up to a .577 with almost no problem with a limbsaver pad on, I can tolerate a .700 nitro express, but then again, I only fired one shot and it still hurt quite a bit.
@baconator490 I agree, that's the only reason I can handle the 700 nitro express, but even with the limbsaver pad, it still lifted my foot off the ground. I will never shoot anything bigger than a 460 weatherby magnum without a limbsaver pad and a muzzlebreak.
I plan on moose and bison when I'm more expirienced and would like a gun that would be managable as a kid that could still kill a bison with magnum slugs.
I know that if I were to ask Brenneke to make a 3-1/2" version of their black magic magnum or gold magnum slugs then I'm sure they'd handle bison and moose with no problem.
Hi. You will want the BLACKHAWK Spec-ops Tactical stock. Cost between $95 - $125 depends where you look. Try Ebay. DO NOT get the one that says NRS. Usually, the picture will show you a 2 spring recoil supression system. That's the one! My "girlie-girlie" wife could shoot 3" Mag Slugs all day!!! I've put the worst mag ammo through mine and it's just amazing! Almost ZERO kick! Get one. See ya. Corey
personally, I'm a 12-year old who manages heavy recoil by saying that he can and just trying it. I only hunt deer right now but when I turn 15 I get to go on a bear hunt in the smokey mountains. I am no loser, I bet you couldn't shoot a 44 magnum when you were 12 and I bet you couldn't shoot a 460 weatherby magnum at 12 either, yeh I am around heavy recoil more than you'll ever be, I am no loser. so stick that in your pipe and suck it
@drewnickel you are gay... probobly doesnt even know how to turn the saftey off on a gun. ill give you my 10 ga and you can shoot that and watch you go crying back to your mom were you belong
@redsneckboy and also, a 10ga is no problem if you learn how to hold it correctly, just learn that and you could fire nearly any caliber. I use to flinch when shooting a 20ga, but then I started adjusting my shoulder, and realized that for me if I hold it on the center of the collar bone that it doesn't hurt at all. try it and you'll see. and also don't tense up. the right position might be different for each person, so just expirement with it for a while and you'll find it.
kid ive been shootin since i was about 9 im almost 17 now.. i know how to shoot a gun i shoot my guns every single weekend one weekend of shootin for me is probobly as much as you have done in your hole life..
@redsneckboy I spend hours shooting things from .22lrs to 10-gauge shotguns. I shoot 300 win mags, 243 winchesters, and almost all rifles below .375h&h mag. I don't have the money to shoot anything heavier recoiling more than a few times.
@redsneckboy and also, you can never handle a gun with no prob, especially heavy recoiling guns, but if you wear a limbsaver pad, or a past pad you can lower any pain to almost nothing. the gun will still rise the same ammount and push you back the same, but the pad absorbs the blunt force. try that and a 460 weatherby magnum, and holding it correctly, and you've got a perfect combination for tolerance
@redsneckboy those are pads you can wear on your shoulder to lower felt recoil, clearly your stupid if you didn't know that. and I was talking about how I use them to allow me to shoot heavy recoiling guns like the 460 weatherby magnum
@redsneckboy well don't complain when you try shooting a heavy recoiling gun without one. trust me if you shot a .577 tyrannosaur at a range, you'd better hope your wearing a limbsaver. my parents have let me try alot of those heavy hitting elephant guns, and the .577 I didn't even have a thought in my mind of not wearing a limbsaver pad when I shot, even then my dad pushing against my back's what kept me from falling over
@redsneckboy the only reason I have for shooting them is just for fun and to get better at managing recoil. all of the guns above .505gibbs I've only shot a few rounds ou of, all of the ones below that I've probably shot between 10 and 10,000 out of. I make good use of my weekends and spend up to 5 hours on the weekends shooting my mossberg 500 at the range and at my friend jay's yard
up to a certain point, when elephant hunting, you will still definately feel it. adrenaline will only lower what you feel temporarily, but once your into the elephant guns, you'll still feel it.
@redsneckboy my dad tales me to a farm every weekend to shoot, and the farmer has alot of guns, so I have the opprotunity to shoot guns that most people don't get to, and shoot for a long time too.
@redsneckboy I'm 5'8" , 160lbs, and fairly well built, I can hold any size gun I want, all the way up to a 20mm, which I have yet to shoot, but I've definately held one. and if I can handle a gun a fourth my weight, I can handle any gun. and recoil to me is nothing. I've shot 460 weatherby magnums with almost no trouble. I've been shooting since I was old enough to walk and talk, which was when I was 3, and I shot a .22lr cricket rifle.
your an idiot.. recoil can bother anybody if you shoot enough .. you must no that ? because your mr guns and your 12.. ask anybody that shoots a normall remington 870 12 ga with 3 in slugs your shoulder gets a little sore after shooting it dont matter how you shoot
@redsneckboy yes, that is true, but no ammount of recoil is unbareable. I can shoot 10 to 15 3" slugs before my shoulder gets sore. and I can handle 3 to 5 shots from elephant guns like the 460 weatherby mag. I've tried harder recoiling guns than that at the range with my dad, such as the 600 overkill, but only 1 to 2 shots is enough for me. the biggest I have ever shot, is my friend's 700 nitro, which he recently sold to buy a car.
@redsneckboy and my friend by the way was 25 so yes he's legal age. he sold it for $15,000 to buy his new car. and just for the record, it's not unbareable, but it does hurt quite a bit even with the limbsaver pad
yeah you can use slugs in a smooth bore for the best accuracy use a "rifled" slug the sabot slugs are designed for a rifled barrell but you can still shoot em in a smooth bore
no, some slugs have rifling carved into the projectile, whcih is better than using reg. slugs in a rifled barrel, cuz i think you'll fuck up the barrel using fletchettes in a rifled barrel. CAN ANYONE CONFIRM THIS????
no, im talking about fletchettes, the little darts, but whole packs of them loaded into a shell. Im wondering if they might get tangled into each other if one of them catches on a rifling groove and wedges itself into the barrel...
ive never heard of fletchettes in shotshells anyone can buy but it would get stuck in the rifling. Thats why you cant use shot in rifled shotgun barrels.
How did it manage to do that if you unloaded it? Did you drop it on your arm or something? Of course if you had only fired it instead, it might have left a bruise, but that would have been on your shoulder, not your arm.
Every bullet starts to drop immediately exiting the muzzle, there is no shotshell or cartridge that makes a bullet or sabot climb. The reason you see positive numbers for bullet drop in ballistic charts, is because the gun is zeroed for a much longer distance, not because the bullet climbs. However, drop from a 3" mag sabot at 50 yards is around 2 inches, though it will vary based on powder charge, whether you are using rifled slugs or sabots, and length of barrel.
if i aim a gun up the bullet will go up u jackass...
the bullet only start falling once it runs out of energy for fighting the air
physics 101... the bullet go up if i aim it at an angle.... its called a ballistic trajectory... if i aim the gun level... then ya it will but ti wont start falling instantly if i angle the gun...it will start to slow down then fall
No, the bullet is fighting gravity the whole time, air resistance is only a small part of it. Firstly, bullet drop is calculated from a horizontal trajectory. Even the flattest shooting sporting cartridges: 204 Ruger, .22-250, all the way up to cartridges that remain supersonic at over 1,000 yards, like the 416 Barret and 50 BMG, will have perceivable drop at under 100 yards. Physics 101, "an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by an external force"-Newton's 1st law of motion
@restorationsanity Is that what passes for rational discourse in your circle? Present reasoned evidence to the contrary, then we will decide who is more intelligent.
Im guessing since he owns the gun and bought the gun and since you cannt read what it says on the gun im guessing your wrong and hes right you fucking idiot
There are plenty of things you can hunt with a moss500 and slugs! dixieslugs dotcommmm if you have the smoothbore barrel you can hit stuff like deer and canines, if you have the rifled barrel and add-on sights, like Wilson Firesights or 4x32 scope, you can do head shots on hogs.
besides, even if he uses it in self defense of home property do you think the robber should be 100% safe from the hard working owner of that property? as far as I'm concerned if you try to steal someone's livelihood you better accept the risk that your life can be taken in the process. I don't work 9-5 shifts so some lowlife can just steal what I've earned for myself and my family. Don't worry - the shotgun stays safe on my property, and so do my belongings.
Hey man, I have every right to protect myself against watter-filled attack bottles!
Sorry, I'll try to remember your rights next time when I post a video. God forbid you were forced to watch it, and probably over and over in order for you to stare at my saggy ass. :)
i just watched the dicovery m16 vs. ak47 on youtube the m16 is beter then the ak47 { better accuracy} not just by a little but by alot rather have a weapon that can hit the target then a weapon that misses the kill zone over 50% of the time
Actually the presently used Kevlar body armor is almost worthless against a 7.62mm round. The first hit with be stopped but shatters several plates. The second round penetrates and does it's job.
Slugs have mass wic allows them to penetrate body armor way-better than any rifle round. The 0.5cal sniper rifles aren't really rifles per-se. That is a M2 round they are firing. So really just a semi-auto low-cap M2 with a scope.
only if your talking armor... also there are slugs made by certain companies that have a sabotted penetrator. and mass and speed are a recprirocal equation if you know physics at all. the density and hardness and shape of the projectile also matter. A SJH or any non FMJ or steel core round from .308 will not penetrate a III or IIIEOD vest
so if you have say a 150 grain .308 moving at say 2200 fps I dont know off hand military loading specs but I think they are in that neighborhood you will smoke III. So then if you had a 300 grain slug with a steel core penetrator button moving at 1200 fps (or faster if u used 3.5" super mags) u could also smoke heavy kevlar. See you are comparing military ammo to hunting ammo. most shotgun ammo manufacturers making hunting ammo so u should compare rifle rounds for hunting to his slugs.
Really? The 7.62mm Soviet round for the AKM moves about 2,300 fps compared to the 3,300 5.56mm NATO, but it does far more damage. you should see that Youtube video,
dude i am buying a new mossberg 500a field version for 300 bucks and it comes with a slug barrel and i cant wait to get kicked lol i have only fired a 20 guage before now
Sorry but Shotgun slugs dont peirce body armor. The armor plates we use in the Army can stand a shot from a 7.62, well thats what they say on the plate insert. I wouldnt want to get hit and find out first hand though.
The slug has less penetration then a 7.62, but the slug will probably knock you on your ass alot faster, break alot more ribs im sure (heard somewhere that getting shot while in kevlar still breaks things, so correct me if im wrong.)
I would not feel safe. I have put a .556 (.223) round with expanding projectile through a 10mm steel I beam. It just melted its way through! and left a 10mm hole!!
Yeah, you're actually right. All I had for video at the moment was a crappy 3.0 megapixel digi-camera set to "video". I need some new video equipment soon lol.
Idiots. No one has mentioned ACCURACY.

damn streight. just cause all those other anti-gun fucks say that this is bad, why shouldn't he enjoy it?
4Q3W2E1R 3 years ago 5
There are plenty of things you can hunt with a moss500 and slugs! dixieslugs dotcommmm if you have the smoothbore barrel you can hit stuff like deer and canines, if you have the rifled barrel and add-on sights, like Wilson Firesights or 4x32 scope, you can do head shots on hogs.
stopglobalswarming 3 years ago 3
just to let you know, saying blatantly a lot does not make you sound smart
ihateu3311 3 years ago 5
besides, even if he uses it in self defense of home property do you think the robber should be 100% safe from the hard working owner of that property? as far as I'm concerned if you try to steal someone's livelihood you better accept the risk that your life can be taken in the process. I don't work 9-5 shifts so some lowlife can just steal what I've earned for myself and my family. Don't worry - the shotgun stays safe on my property, and so do my belongings.
Deadeye777 3 years ago 4
Hey man, I have every right to protect myself against watter-filled attack bottles!
Sorry, I'll try to remember your rights next time when I post a video. God forbid you were forced to watch it, and probably over and over in order for you to stare at my saggy ass. :)

i just watched the dicovery m16 vs. ak47 on youtube the m16 is beter then the ak47 { better accuracy} not just by a little but by alot rather have a weapon that can hit the target then a weapon that misses the kill zone over 50% of the time

Try using a camera with more than the average 25fps next time. Something with 60 and pal resolution.
Then the slowmotion would look better.
Fun was it? ^^

So really just a semi-auto low-cap M2 with a scope.
karkkosvolfe 4 years ago
so you know Ball 7.62 NATO can toast up too a Class III vest but you still think a slug is a better pentrator than 'any rifle round'!!? WTF.
You're all mixed up. velocity determines pentration. Yeah, albeit mass helps but its not as critical. overall speed kills, not mass.
Juicetech 4 years ago
only if your talking armor... also there are slugs made by certain companies that have a sabotted penetrator. and mass and speed are a recprirocal equation if you know physics at all. the density and hardness and shape of the projectile also matter. A SJH or any non FMJ or steel core round from .308 will not penetrate a III or IIIEOD vest
awsomeshot 4 years ago
so if you have say a 150 grain .308 moving at say 2200 fps I dont know off hand military loading specs but I think they are in that neighborhood you will smoke III. So then if you had a 300 grain slug with a steel core penetrator button moving at 1200 fps (or faster if u used 3.5" super mags) u could also smoke heavy kevlar. See you are comparing military ammo to hunting ammo. most shotgun ammo manufacturers making hunting ammo so u should compare rifle rounds for hunting to his slugs.
awsomeshot 4 years ago
Really? The 7.62mm Soviet round for the AKM moves about 2,300 fps compared to the 3,300 5.56mm NATO, but it does far more damage. you should see that Youtube video,
"M16 vs AK-47."
chernobleman 4 years ago
Yes the AK does have more take down power, but the M16 ha a longer range and is more accurate

mexicano3747 4 years ago
12 Gauge with 3" Magnum Slugs: it can penetrate through
normal bodyarmor which is strong enough to stop a charging bull.
trainhoboVEGAS 4 years ago
Sorry but Shotgun slugs dont peirce body armor. The armor plates we use in the Army can stand a shot from a 7.62, well thats what they say on the plate insert. I wouldnt want to get hit and find out first hand though.
Stylensky 4 years ago
so how strong is the slug?
trainhoboVEGAS 4 years ago
The slug has less penetration then a 7.62, but the slug will probably knock you on your ass alot faster, break alot more ribs im sure (heard somewhere that getting shot while in kevlar still breaks things, so correct me if im wrong.)
excabus 4 years ago
I would not feel safe. I have put a .556 (.223) round with expanding projectile through a 10mm steel I beam. It just melted its way through! and left a 10mm hole!!
