It WOULD BE a joke, if she were joking. Notice how Whedon has to completely save her. In her defense, she was self-deprecating about the whole thing. I'm not made at her, you know, I'm just saying, it's good they aren't letting the girl from Tru Calling write for a Joss Whedon show.
