  • Those tree's in the beginning are now corporations.

How much Elliott would hate living in our modern society.

How technology and materialism is controlling all of our lives.

  • It's funny how there are so many comments like, "Imagine how great it would be to hang out with him for a day!" Before he was famous, there were probably a million people who had the opportunity to hang out with him but didn't. Not to diss the people saying that--I wanna hang out with him too.

  • @poisonpizza12 my account cant do thumbs up or down for some reason but my god this comment deserves a +

  • Comment removed

  • p.s my comments were not to hurt E.S fans out there. elliott is like a filter who keeps sheeple from distinguishing true genius

  • @LENNYlanes pick up the following albums: XO, Roman Candle, New Moon, From A Basement on The Hill, Figure Eight, Either/Or, and his self titled. Plus there is a cd called "To Elliott From Portland" with covers by local Portland bands as a homage to his legacy. And you can check out his band Heatmiser from way back in the day.

  • i understand everything about elliott smith, after i play my gigs i usually cant wait to get home and hang out with my buddy "bill" whos kind of homeless but we talk music all day and i leave my cell at my house for days. i get why he doesnt hang out with famous ppl, shoot if i made it big i know for a fact i would be hanging out with bill other than sluts like lohan. the worlds a much better place when your surrounded by REAL people and you enjoy life you stuck ups ppl out there should try it

  • by the way i love clemintine/stupidity tries/son of sam of course/ i dont know the main song at the beg. of this vid can some1 please tell me, and ive been playing guitar for like ten years playing everywhere in texas and right when i was going to call music quits i found the guy ive been hearing on that cd for awhile and he has definitely helped me find my own style. pretty much just am myself and w/out knowing we used alot of the same chords i mean hes a gazillion times more talented haha

  • hey guys heres my E.S story a strange girl game me a cd when i was in school 5 years ago and it had E.S on it and jeff buckley i had always loved those 2 particular songs but could never find anyone to show me who sang them so i just typed in the words of son of sam and found it this was like 6months ago and so im a new/old e.s fan and am wondering if anyone could give me a msg w/their fav e.s songs?? ive read alot about him and his life i thought it was cool he lived here in tx like me.

  • He's a rare breed, so talented and incredible and yet he's so humble and grounded.

  • Neil Gust at 3:19 emphasizing the end of "Indipendence Day" always makes me laugh!

  • So talented.

  • fuck, wish i could've been there!!! SO jealous of these people with him!

  • @deathdayparty2 Yeah, me too. But then again, if I actually met him, I probably would start seizing up like crazy.

  • Are yoo CRAZY?! Have yoo lost y'r MIIIIND??!

  • hey @tomthefunky fuck off.

  • March 21 1999 was my 22 birthday. You only live a day but its briliant anyway.

  • It was my birthday too, that March 21. Except i was turning 5.

  • I really really don't mean to sound like an ass but i feel like Elliott could do better with his pick of friends but i geuss they must be cooler than they look.

  • @MrPitseleh my god man, are you kidding? cause you sound retarded! guess you must pick your friends based on how "cool" they look?!!

  • @idranktodie You're the retarded one saying looks don't matter at all but have yourself wearing a mask in your photo. I was only saying that with how cool Elliott is you'd think he'd be hanging out with some super awesome people and they don't seem like they are from the video.

  • @MrPitseleh they're all incredibly talented musicians: Janet Weiss, Sam Coomes, Neil Gust, Gilly Hanner,Sean

Croghan, Pauly Pulvernetti (sure, I butchered the spelling). I guess when you get popular you'll only be surrounded by cool looking people. I won't hold my breath.

  • @clarknuckles I know Sam and Neil not really by sight though. I know looks don't matter much but it's Elliott and he is just unbelievably awesome, you could expect his friends to but a little more interesting in appearence. The dude kissing him through his hand as a little odd too. lol

  • I kept waiting for them to yell out "Picture Book!" after all the La la la's. That was really frustrating

    Cool video though.

  • He is one of the most down to earth musicians in all of history. It's really horrible how he didn't think that he wasn't that good, but in reality he was amazing. Just look at how many artists would not be making music because of him. He inspired alot of people, and it's sad to say he's not on this earth anymore. RIP <3

  • Very interesting stuff

  • love the end!

  • funny how im watching this on march 21st and the timecode in this video said march 21, 1999. Ah the random but insignificant coincidences of life

  • Height of his brilliance, right after XO and right before Figure 8.

  • damn, being from nc, those cats at the end really seemed like some of what you'd see around every corner in my hometown. he didn't look amused, and neither am I when I see some people acting like that, happens often, especially at waffle house. lol

  • elliott was so sweet in this video. he was considerate and engaging- jeez , like a real person would be. if he had the problems that everyone attributed to him and he could be so compassionate to others , then that tells the motherfuckin tale, doesnt it?

  • 3:19 hahaha slick.

  • Im sorry for being immature but you just godda keep clicking on that time. It nearly killed me.

  • hahaha totally agree man.

  • lol i love the end of this video..

  • How ignorant can you honestly be. Depression is nothing to joke about, it's a mental illness. Maybe read a book or two, so you don't have to make a fool of yourself. Also most creative people have some form of depression... maybe your best friend or one of your parents is depressed. A girl I know her father, who was perfectly fine, good job etc said he went for a walk, 5 hours later they found him hanging from a tree with a cord around his neck, dead. Try thinking before you type.

  • Im going to have to say, I like your comment mister. I just got out of a mental hospital, and everyone was so goddamned depressed, and one almost offed her self/ It was sad. But it can happen to anyone, and of course it is a real mental illness. Its realler than real.

  • Your not alone friend. I got out of a mental hospital before christmas. Elliotts music makes things better. =)

  • no kidding just read a few paragraphs about it and you"ll know more then you need to. i dont have depression but my heart goes out to those that do.

  • they were drunk as hell, hes probably like wtf man haha. i thought they were weird too.

  • @tomthefunky lol.

how can there be this big of a gap in the way you think from the way I do?

    you suck.

  • You need to feel the power and glory of Stax Records. I promise it'll help.

  • Not all about soul music, man.

  • @tomthefunky fuck you.

  • 5.03 onwards,laugh my assoff. He's so unimpressed lol.

  • Nice to see Elliott enjoy himself a little, love everything about that man, greatest balladeer of our time hands down

  • is that tremont music hall in charlotte nc at 3:50?

  • Whats the song at the beginning, plllllllz

  • The song at the beginning is "Independence Day," off the album "XO" (1998).

  • One of the greatest musical talents ever. He is so missed.

  • Comment removed

  • does anyone know the song at about 3:40?

  • "Picture book" by the Kinks

  • picture book by the kinks.

  • He is the reason I make muuuuussssiiiiccc!!

  • Aww, at the end Elliot is like I wish these fucking people would leave.

  • @xxgoods I like how he just steps infront of them with a face that clearly says OMFG. lol

  • @xxgoods If you're going to write a thumbs-upped comment, and least spell the man's name right.

  • Who is eliot ?

  • Two L's, two T's.

  • Sure, he did drugs, but does that make a person big-headed and egotistical?

  • big headed? you have to be egotistical to hate drug addicted meth addicts in the South? honestly?

  • Did you get what I meant?

  • he wasn't egotistical at all. i mean, it's not like i knew the guy but listen to his music. he was very insecure and empathetic.

the coke thing is true however. with songs like "the white lady loves you more" and other references. he was heavily into alcohol, crack, heroin, and even on occasion would attempt to overdose on purpose, but had built up an immunity so he wouldn't ever actually die.

  • again: i'm right and you're right. it's been fun...

  • He's the totally not egotistical - he hated playing huge shows, he didn't want to get huge, famous, and rich. He played music because he wanted to. He even said himself he didn't think he was as good as a lot of musicians - he put himself behind many because he was humble, though he is definitely one of the most incredible musical aritists to ever meet the Earth, and the rest of Man kind.

  • Very well said

  • @Amulius truth

  • @Amulius He once said in response to how to be a song writer that "I think it's pretty easy if you just relax and stop thinking about what you think other people want to hear" and I think that's a testament to that.

  • @VincentPrice111 Totally agree - well said

I've taken that statement and I've ran with it... I believe that if people stop living by the pretense of accepted 'culture,' they will always be significantly better songwriters.

  • @Amulius Kind of reminds me of this video /watch?v=cSIgMVgId6E&feature=related

  • I was 9 years old

  • the folks at the end of the video are in Columbia SC. we played the same night as the Rolling Stones and getting off the bus in front of a motel they assumed we were with their entourage. funny stuff.

  • i feel sorry for everyone in this video. To know elliott and then have him taken from you...

  • haha the hics at the end

  • Happy birthday, Pete.

  • i love his smile. 0:28 and 0:48

  • What are you talking about? Mullets were totally in style! LOL I think Elliott's look says it all...man, a picture is really worth a thousand words.

  • you saying somethin bout my mullet?

  • thanks so much for posting this. a great video of him.

    r.i.p

  • Yeah the ending is perfect. When everyone walks off and elliott's left standing there, such a cool image photographically too with the orange van and elliott's orange jumper.

    We should clone him back!

    RIP

  • What is that song playing on the stereo just after Independence Day finishes? Sounds pretty good.

  • It's Kinks "Picture Book"

  • the end is just so utterly perfect. sums him up. he found something vulgar, yet mildly amusing with every day things. what a class act he was.

  • this makes me sad.. but happy

  • God damn it I wish he was still here right now. Its not fare.

  • what's really unfair is that those drunk idiots got to be in his presence, a foot away from him. ugh, lucky bitches.

  • look at Elliots face at 5:00

xD oh my god, i love him so much.

he's like, "what the fuck is her problem?"

  • i know... those people were so stupid

  • I base my acoustic song writing off Elliott :)

  • 10 years...

  • Goddamnit... Elliot is the reason why I pick my guitar and play.

  • it's just great to see him laugh

  • i know...
