Boy, Buddy is angry at his bass player. At 4:40 he gives him the "wake-up call" by hitting his swish cymbal TWICE no less. He means business when he does that. "COME ON, PLAY !! " It's a wonder he didn't bean him with one of his drumsicks.
@nealbfinn@ritzcrackers27 nealbfinn is correct, it was first recorded by weather report in 1977 on an album called heavy weather. It was rearraganged for maynards band as well as buddys band. Maynard has more recordings of it, once with his big band, and than again in 1993 on the album one more trip to birdland with big bop nouveau.
Weather Report first recorded it. Buddy, Maynard and Manhattan Transfer covered it. Joe Zawinul wrote the composition. Not sure who wrote this arrangement. Don't think it was Bob Mintzer even though he was writing for the band a lot at that point
sorry if I'm wrong... but I think that Birdland is Maynard Ferguson's tune... anyways I love listening to it and playing it... probably one of my favourites
If I had been drumming in that band I would've been pissed too! Listen to them! Right from the get-go they drag and drag.... the bari-sax and the bass especially.
Oh stop it - with the " he looks PO'ed and says "Come on" - it wasn't that bad. I thought i heard a wwrong note. or maybe he heard the energy level drop - he pushed for perfection - like he gave it.
cI652000, I know he expected 100% all of the time and maybe he heard a wrong note or the bass or piano was not with him but I wondered if anyone heard anything. And... he does look pissed-off. And... under the right (or wrong for the guy who pissed him off) circumstances I don't think he would be above telling him about it right there.
At 4:17 he looks over his left shoulder and looks PO'ed and says "Come on, man!" to either the piano or bass player. Can anyone hear what was going on? Was someone playing too slow?
Also somewhere near the end he switches from traditional to matched grip. Did he do this frequently?
Haha, take a look at 2:29 in the vid, after Buddy's big fill. Steve Marcus is just sitting there with a big grin on his face shaking his head, as if to say, "Man, there he goes again." Love it!
@dlyciousmusic : If my memory serves me (for a change) Buddy was right back at it at a show in Europe 9 WEEKS after his 4-way bypass. To say his doctors did not approve is an understatement ! ! Amazing, no ??
Buddy simply continues to amaze me! Buddy masterfully combines rock, funk and jazz rhythms together in this comp. I would like to have heard Buddy play this tune with John Scofield on Guitar. I think they would have played off the other so very, very well.
Buddy, where ever you are, you are far and above the BEST drummer that ever was or ever will be. Thanks for the concert, the album, the drumsticks. You are a Legend for all times.
oh and Elvis was king, but Jesus is the King of all Kings. I sure hope Buddy accepted that fact...have you?
Steve Marcus and Buddy Rich could have solo'd off each other playing in separate states just from their mental empathy. It is rare to see any two musicians that make the word "great" seem so deficient play together in that unconcious groove. Barron Brown and Steve Smith are pretty close though.
Some-one will knock you clean out if you say that amongst serious musicians .... you complete cock. You are a lonely little shit. Everybody must hate you. Wanker
I'm sure you're not the prettiest flower in the garden, but if you played as well as Steve Marcus, I wouldn't care if you took every solo sitting on the crapper.
Damn,.....I could only wish to play the drums like that!!! This is probably my favourite jazz piece of all time, and this is incredible playing!!!! Yeah,I heard him yelling at his Bass Player!!!
Buddy is so pissed. Frustrated with the bass player. His playing is especially aggressive. He even shouts at the bass player at some point, using the china as a wake up call. He's my hero.

Actually, it's his right shoulder but he says something to the bass or piano player who maybe be playing behind the beat?

He came from old school. Dorsey, Shaw, Sinatra, Basie etc... That's the way it was in those days.

ya that bass player definetely got the boot after this show lol buddy did have a bit of a temper lol

Actually this was live in october 1983. I skipped the homecoming dance at scholl to watch it. His bypass was in January 1983.

He has a bypass, THEN played this gig 9 months later?? Wow.
dlyciousmusic 2 years ago 2
Actually I saw him in a small club in Dayton, Ohio called Gilly's. It was May 10th after the bypass, less than four months!

Buddy was a Jew, so therefore he did not believe in your mythical, non-existant jesus.
Plus, Elvis Presley was one of the most over-rated entertainers in history.
MarkR1957 3 years ago
haha thats funny
Jesus lived and breathed, just as you and I do
maybe you dont believe he was the Son of God, and thats your perogative
but you cant fight that battle and win
historical records show he existed
I respect whatever religion you are and your beliefs, but dont bash on others. and if you really have to, get your shit straight
