its funny i was the other way about i wouldnt think twice about overhauling an auto trans myself but the first time i did a manual i was like etcg thinking i should have my head examined but now i have done a few i am confident on both setups.
my friend has an odyssey, his second gear doesnt "slip" once it locks into second its solid the issue he has is as its releasing first and going into second theres a scary period where its almost like its stuck between gears and cant get into second and the engine revs way up and then it settles into second
I must agree: You are crazy for attempting to do that. I attempted to do a Taurus trany once and quickly learned to regret it. It is true what they say: "Clean room" means clean room.
BTW, why did you suspect clutches when more logical would be O-rings and electronic control units?
My car is not shifting at the correct rpm. It is going about 2k- 3k rpms higher than correct down shifts. So basicaly, 2nd to 3rd should happen in the 3k range and at 30 mph (or somewhere there abouts), but if I throttle down it will rev to 5-6k. Its hard to explain.... basicaly its like if you rev the engine at idle in park...except its happening while moving. If you need me to explain better let me know what doesn't make sense. Any Idea?
Hello Eric. I have 97 accord ex 2.2 vtec, what should the rpm''s be when driving at 75 80 mph steady. Mine reads 3000 to 3200 is the correct or normal. i also changed both sets of selenoids that on the transmission located by the trans dipstick it didnt really change from the before to after.
I don't recommend buying rebuild kit from Honda. It WILL FAIL again. Buy aftermarket kits like from Transtar or Transtec or Level 10. From Eric's rebuild, it looks like this Odyssey failed from oil starvation because of clogged oil passages. When taking apart these trannies, look for signs of heat damage or oil starvation. Also, if you have access to a press, remove piston inside the drum to clean up oh-so-important oil passages and rubber piston o-ring. Believe me it looks like metal mud inside
Excellent video! Reverse quit out on my son's 1992 Accord. The transmission is a 4 spd auto, model APX4. I bought a rebuild kit, new filter, reman torque converter, 7 qts of Honda fluid then went to it. I found no broken O-rings, no metal shavings or any signs of damage. I throughly disassembled and cleaned every last part then reassembled and torqued per the Honda serve manual. She now shifts great in all fwd gears but still no reverse. Anyone have any idea what I missed?
did any body change the trans fluid regulary? ,try it first,is easier and cheaper than repair, specialy on hondas ,and use a good trans oil.i did it with mi montero 2001 and solve that comon vibration problem that they do, remember change the filter(not easy on hondas because is not accesible unless you open the trans).Try change the oil atleast 2 times in a month ,to clean the trans ,most of the time the problems are solve...good luck.
@CultureShockSix you always soak the clutch discs in ATF overnight for an automatic transmission because the clutches absorb the fluid so they don't run dry when you throw it in gear the first time.
When i first started building honda transmissions,i hated them. However, after alot of time and practice and guidance and mistakes and comebacks and one or two nervous breakdowns,i got to where i love doing them now.
Hello, I have a question re an 03 Honda Ody. Front motor mount. Dealership is quoting $465 to replace. Is this excessive? Why so much? Do u have a video on this? . . . Thx!
Hi I gather it failed again? What went wrong? I think you should try again, it must be possible to work out exactly what went wrong with your repair. Most transmissions have a few weak points with well known fixes or updates.
@EricTheCarGuy Greetings Eric. How's your transmission working now? My 4x4 2002 Ranger 4.0 5r55e transmission is having issues. 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd does a very rough shift depending on how I accelerate. A transmission specialist charges me $850 to $1700 rebuilt depending on what repairs are going to be done. A remanufactured at autozone costs from $1500 to $1800 and a rebuild kit is $500. I just want to know your opinion because I think is a very expensive repair. Thank you.
This is the one that I stumbled upon that got me interested in your videos. Not only did you have the knowledge to actually get it to work properly, (sorry it didn't hold up) but you also had the courage to outright say 'this might not turn out properly' instead of being a great ape about it and beating your chest. Certainly earned my respect. ^^
@GammaCruxis Thanks very much for that, I'm not fool enough to think I'm better than my fellow humans and it's much easier to just cut through the BS and get on with learning.
Hey Eric, My 03 Ody was making a cachunk when going into gear but not slipping till one day it started slipping and very quickly (10 miles or so) went to complete slippage no power, the computer
(I assume) freaked out and started acting like it was trying to engine brake. The fluid smells and looks burnt. I pulled into a shop they said I need a tranny to the tune of $4000 for a rebuilt. Should i attempt to get the tranny and install myself? Could you do a video on the install?
@Pawsandconsider I actually need to replace the trans in this van still and when I do I hope to make a video but it may be some time before I have the time to do that but I do plan to make a video of the process. As for doing it yourself know that you will need to drop the entire sub frame to get the trans out, it's a pretty involved job for the DIY.
@EricTheCarGuy yeah very true.. Its garbage now I just opened it up out of curiousity.. Pretty complex inside.. I can image what the bmw 8sp autos look like
hey i've witnessed this odd problem 2 times about 8 months ago, and 2 times in the past 5 days. When going downhill i come to a stop sign, i accelerate but the rpm just goes and the car doesn't move then Boom she jumps into gear and i take off on the spot. As if someone put the shift lever into Neutral and threw it into drive while my rpm was high.. This never happened for the past 9 months, only seems to happen when facing down on a hill.. Whats the deal?
@shalisa71 In fact I've done those in the past but it's been some time, it's usually pretty straightforward however if it's 4WD it presents it's own set of challenges but it's still a pretty straightforward job from what I remember.
Hello eric the car guy any theory of what might be wrong w. My tran its a auto 95 accord it doesn't go into drive sometimes & when it does it barly moves.. I have it out & took it apart I'm gona try to rebuild it bcus I'm not using it anymore.. Just for my practice & curiosity
@TheEsevee Hard to say, aside from the hard parts inside the transmission there are electronic controls that could also cause shifting problems. You need to do some pressure testing and diagnosis BEFORE you take it out to really know what is wrong with it.
Thanks for the inside look! I appreciate having some insight into the great mystery of Honda Odyssey transmission failure. I'm looking at a 3rd transmission inside 135k miles on my 99 Odyssey. And you know how much that costs!! Since your transmission was slipping but the gear plates didn't look very worn is it reasonable to conclude that a fluid change with some Lucas anti-slip addative may help to resolve the symptoms? I just can't imagine that the rebuilt replacement should only last 40K
@dfelb8 I tried Lucas before I got to this point so no it won't work unfortunately. It's really a design flaw and I'm going to look into a way to update it and present that information should I find it at a future date.
hi i wonder if u can help me with an advice. something is wrong with my transmission. when i put it in drive it doesnt move at all unless i bring the engine to like 5000 rpm, then it jerks a bit... however if i shift it to 2 then it starts crawling slow and jerks too but keeps moving forward. it even shifts to 2 nd gear. then when i reach like 20mph i can shift it back to "d" and it drives more or less fine.
@vitali1985 It does sound like a transmission issue you might want to check the fluid level and condition first but if it's at the proper level then you probably need a transmission.
if i accelerae slow i can reach normal crusing speeds of 60-70mph, with normal engine rpm(2500), and i feel it shift through 3rd and 4th gears. if i try to accelerate suddenly at speed of around 30-35mph it jerks too but then i need too ease off the gas pedal... the fluid lvl is ok, i actually added a quart just few days before it happened, but im not sure if it smells burnt...also tcc is stuck on, the obd II says but im not sure if its constant or just a code popped up..
so my question is: is it serios problem like with clutch disks or so and i need to rebuilt the tranny completelly to solve it or maybe it has something to do with solenoids like tcc solenoid or pressure solenoid. if
its definitelly solenoid prob i can atempt to repeir it by myself and save bunch of money..so plz let me know what u think based on your experience.i shoulda done transmission servise as soon as i got the car but kept
@cbr900rr919 Yea those transmissions are fun but these can be tricky, I suppose if I did more of this work it would be less intimidating. Thanks for the comment.
@EricTheCarGuy they didn't do any automatic transmission repair in the school you got your ASE cert. from? Not all do but certain colleges will teach you how to repair a certain company. and it helps in rebuilding others like this one. i have never gotten into any asian transmissions. they dont look fun. i still think the non electronic transmissions are better. no solenoids to go bad and computer problems. it seams the lock up and electronic transmission's go bad sooner than the older ones. IMO
@cbr900rr919 Yes and I wouldn't be a master tech if I wasn't certified in auto trans, the school nor ASE covers these transmissions however as they are different than most automatics out there.
@cbr900rr919 "Transmission" when you go to school and taking the test, you learn one type of transmission. In the real world is another story. If it easy, i would not paid big bux.
Trust me, every model, year, manufacture is slightly different on its design.
@MrTee448 Yea especially considering I drove the van to the shop from my house across town and it was my only ride home so in essence I had to do this in about 9 hours, hope it worked and drive home. Perhaps if I took a bit more time and worked in a cleaner environment I would have been less apprehensive. Automatic transmissions are the most complicated system on any vehicle and you need a good working knowledge of them before you decide to tackle them I don't recommend it for the DIY.
O by the way thanks for sharing your skills with us..I have watched all your videos and I must say that your videos have given me confidence to work on my car so thsnks alot
The tranny on my 99 tl gave out on a long trip I made it home by driving in second gear the whole way back..should I get it rebuilt or should I try to find a used one with low miles and how much do you think it would cost to rebuild? Thank you
@BEASTFROMBOSTON Those transmissions go bad all the time, I recommend a quality rebuild and NOT a salvage yard unit as you may find yourself in the same boat with a used one. Good luck.
I have a 1999 Toyota Sienna, the transmission is screwed up. Yesterday, the vehicle didn't shift gears and reved out. Now the tranny is shifting really hard from 1st to 2nd and we got a code for the tranny. P0770. We took it to the mechanic an they got more codes and it said tranny over haul needed. P0770 is shift solenoid E. Is it the tranny or the solenoid?
My 98 buick lesabre has a problem when you accelerate,it jerks when shifting into second gear,is this a problem with the tranny it self,or does the fluid need to be changed?
IDK n e thing bout transmissions. 2003 honda element.manuel. 130k miles on it. never had a trany fluid change. wanst driven hard ever. Should i flush it or will that make it start to slip due to crud geting knocked loose? PLEASE HELP ME I NEED IT CHANGED BUT am seriously scared i dont know much about transmissions. please
@DtoWnSux1 Manuals don't use the fluid to operate the trans where automatics can't function without fluid. All your doing inside a manual trans is lubricating parts, in an auto trans the fluid not only lubricates but it also performs critical functions that operate the trans and as a result of this it wears out differently than it's manual counterpart.
good video. Thanks for staying honest and posting this. this is what it takes to be a man! You took a risk here because you didn't know exactly what you're doing...and had the guts to share that with us. We appreciate it! I do! Honestly we don't have much of the automatics in Europe (exept the high end limo class) and I personally haven't seen any of those cracked up before. Cudos to you Eric!
@tudorart Thanks very much for that comment it really brought a smile to my face, it's nice when people 'get' what I'm trying to do with my videos. You can learn just as much if not more from failure.
did you have the same symptoms 2 months later? i.e. the second gear clutch slipping? it doesnt look like you replaced any clutch piston seals or mainshaft/secondary shaft teflon rings.. i just did my odyssey transmission, and i replaced the 4 clutches and all the o-rings and teflon rings. I had a problem with losing 1,3,4, and reverse after a couple minutes of driving. second was the only gear that actually held. but it had been doing an awful 1-2 flare for months prior. thanks for the vids
@fridofrida No it just went out. I didn't have much hope for this working in the first place because it wasn't a 'proper' rebuild I was just trying to see if I could do it on the cheep.
Im curious to know if you got the right amount of play in between the clutch pack and the top ring where it hold it from moving. Because if not it will cause it to fail prematurly.
@pawtnahshipp101 I'm aware that could be an issue and probably should have taken more time with this 'rebuild' but I just didn't have the time or money at the time, I knew it was a shot in the dark but I decided to take the chance. It did fail about 2 months after this video. Thanks for the comment.
@drdougdeep I'm not aware of a puller, so I guess no on that one. The trans failed about 3 months after this, I hope to put a replacement in when I get the time and make a video of the process. Thanks for the comment.
hey eric i just subscribed to your channel and i have to say i was totaly hooked , i didnt even know ur channel existed but i found it by mistake . but now that i have found you i have a question . i just got my car "honda accord 2001 4 door lx" to be exact i saw ur questions clip. but anyways i took my car in to replace all the struts on my car but now that they have done this i hear a rattling on the front i think right . they work fine but i hear it when im driving
@bdysnchr I would be looking for something that might have gotten left loose during the replacement especially since they just worked on it. Thanks for the comment and the sub.
well - i can work on engines - and replacing transmissions - But working on transmissions- NO - So many small parts - gears - and cant afford to make a mistake - Since all of these components are located inside - I have a great respect on people rebuilding/fixing automatic trannys. Requires special skills .
I have a 2000 Honda Odyssey that is in my drive way with dire need for it's third automatic transmission and what i am considering is just putting in a 6 speed standard trans if it can be done, still not sure if it is. have you ever head of anyone doing this?
i like the trany clutch job you did, nicly done, question Eric, i was told to check automatic tran fluid in an Accord, the engine chould be off? this is new to me, is that true Eric? please inform me, thank you, Bob~
i enjoyed your tape on the idyssey, i'm wondering if the 4cy auto tran is the same in the accord? watching you do this got my interested to do my auto in my accord 95, regards, Bob~
@robertfrate The 4 cylinder transmission is not the same. I would not advise taking apart an automatic transmission unless you have the experience and the tools, in fact this trans failed again 2 months after this repair.
Nice, how is it going? I just put mine back together, it's going back in the van this weekend. Mine's an MDWA 4 speed from a 98 ody. There are a couple screens in there that you need to clean in the valve body. The valve body itself is super simple to go through. 1 check valve, 1 check valve/piston. Accumulator has a couple checkvalves under the cover. IMHO these are easier than a T350/400/700r4. It's all attention to detail . The steels are different thicknesses on each clutch.
How many miles on this Odyssey? My uncle has a 2000 Odyssey that he bought with 175,000 miles now he has 215,000 with no transmission problems. Could this mean that the transmission has been replaced (he doesn't know) or luckily its original and could mean future transmission problems ? Because its highly unlikely for these crappy odyssey trannys to go over 200,000 miles with no problems
@PeterGriffin4200 I suspect it's been replaced in the past but that does not mean it won't fail again. I've replaced more than one in some cases. You'll just have to wait and see I guess.
Hey Eric I was reading the comments but none really matched my problem. On my tranny it seems to slip from 2nd to 3rd but other times it doesn't at all. It seems to only do it randomly regardless or temp/speed. Also, only sometimes it hesitates to shift from 2nd to 3rd. Is this a sign that the tranny is going out? or could it be just a solenoid? I keep the fluid clean with Honda fluid and keep maintenance on the car too. The car has about 185K miles on it also. Any ideas would be awesome!
@Trainsmaster It could be the solenoids but to be honest in my experience (I was replacing 2 sometimes 3 Honda transmissions a day) it's usually the transmission sorry.
@EricTheCarGuy I'ts alright I figured that was the case but I wanted to ask a what you thought with your experience and all. What do you think about used trannys from salvage yards with about 90K? I know it's a gamble but I can't afford a new one nor really a remanurfactured one either. This may be a stupid question but would a machanic be willing to swap the tranny if I already got thre replacement one? Thanks again for all your feedback I can't stress enough how much I appreciate it!
@Trainsmaster Given that they are known for going bad I don't think a salvage yard trans is the way to go as it could just last a couple of months and your right back where you started. I don't stand behind any work I do with customer supplied parts but I do with the parts that I supply and I would say that is typical.
Hi Eric, as u know, Honda recommends drain, fill, drive, repeat up to 4 times to change max amount of the fluid because the fluid in Torque Converter stays in during the drain. So when I lifted the front and drained the fluid on my Ody, I then started the engine and ran thru some of the gear (with the F wheels up) to remove max fluid. More fluid does come out. I figured there's minimal strain on tranny with wheels up. I check fluid level after refill. Is this a good idea, and safe, or a no-no?
@jjashik7 There should not be an issue as long as you turn the traction control off, if not the ABS will kick in. To be honest that method is not really necessary if you change the fluid about every 30K as that is what is recommended by Honda. However if it's been a while since it was changed or someone put dextron in there that method would work very well.
@darcygoesfast No worries, three months after this it went out again. It is true as I've put my fair share of these transmissions myself. Thanks for the comment.
@EricTheCarGuy Eric let me start by saying i'm a big fan. great vids. My question is on an 00 Nissan maxima with 130K miles on it since i owned the car for about 5yrs never had a tranny drain and filled or flushed. I called this shop today and he recommended the flush over the drain and fill. But i read the outcome of a flush can be a gamble. what you recommended? the tranny is shifting fine BTW. Thanks in advances
@antonio30824 No matter what if you haven't changed the fluid in a while it's a gamble. Personally I would do a drain and fill before a flush but as I said either way you may end up with a problem in the end. Good luck.
Ok, back on Mom's 97 Accord. It has 150k on it and the auto trans fluid is brown and I'm sure never changed. I have read you can only drain and fill 3qt at a time. My fear is this, it shifts a bit hard and I have heard horror stories that if you start changing fluid the tranny could die. I of course would only use genuine Honda fluid and probably do 3qt a week for a few weeks and not all at once. I don't know, AT's always scare me. I also have an 04 Dodge Dakota AT with 75k what about that?
@jonpallan It is true that there are times when you change the fluid like that it could do more harm than good but the truth is you won't know until you try and in some cases you will actually 'fix' a problem rather than cause one. Good luck.
@jonpallan Dodges make the worst AT transmissions ever. I would drop the pan and change the filter with the fluid. But It's likely to fail whether or not you maintain it. 3 friends with dodges in the last 2 months had their Auto trannys die under 70k miles. So at 75 you're already lucky.
I give you props Eric! I took a class on transmissions and we rebuilt a Chrysler transaxel and to say the least, that was easy compared to that odyssey! It look like a nightmare but you got it done.
@Mr91GTS It was a long day to be sure but I should have taken my time and rebuilt it right or just replaced it as it failed again 2 months after I did this. Lesson learned but I think when I go to swap it out I'm going to make a video on it. Thanks for your comment.
@EricTheCarGuy maybe now its the other sideof the clutch? props to you for at least atempting! thats way too big of a chalenge for me! I would go nuts, if I open a transmission and see that.
hey maybe that marcell thing.maybe its worn out so even if the clutch is new the marcell contributes to the pressure against the clutch. good luck man I love your videos and you are our hero! :)
here's a weird one. had a hard shifting tranny on my accord . alternator went so when I replaced it it shifted better . I guess 0.5 or one volt woke up the solenoids a little
Hey, Man you probably make the best videos easy to understand and u seem mad cool with ur jokes and all lol. Anyways, i am having this annoying issue with my 03 V6 Accord automatic. As i begin driving nreach about 20-25 mph the car acts like its in neutral. RPM shoots up but no power to the wheel. its like its stuck in the second gear and wouldn't shift to 3rd. Reps at Honda dealers dont get it n ask me to show it. which with my luck doesn't happen around them. i will make a vid to demo it.
@DaMenaCe3 I hate to say it but what you describe are the classic symptoms of a transmission failure, in fact the transmission in this video had very similar symptoms.
@EricTheCarGuy Thanks Eric, Where would i go from here... Buy a used transmission? new? if i am buying used what should i look for? price range.. (i am sure it depends on the mileage and condition) but a ball park figure ? and how much in labor do u think i am looking at? caz i m sure honda dealers wouldn't put a used transmission. thanks again man.. i dont mean to be annoying just trying to seek help. Also i am about to replace my disk brakes thanks to you..very helpful and inspirational :)
Eric when I replaced my 94 accord tranny( basically the same with one less shift pack ) I decided to take apart the old tranny .
used the helm book that walks you thru it step by step and it was a piece of cake . they give you the specs for the throw on the clutch pack ,all you need is a dial indicator and a micrometer . with their instructions I went through every thing even the valve body. with out the book I wouldn't have known about the left handed thread on the counter shaft.
@hobieslug45 like yours the clutches looked good but the throw of the pack was way off . you can actually feel the play by depressing them. never rebuilt it but put it back together and it is sitting in my back yard . if the tranny that's in there now goes I would have to decide on rebuilding it or hit the u pull it junk yard. these are amazing trannys after 300k when i took it apart it looked brand new inside zero wear on the superman steel they use for the gears. vlv bodies can last forever
@hobieslug45 yea the measurements are a big part of a tranny rebuild as well as working in a clean environment. They are good transmissions for the most part but I feel after they tried to make them shift smoother they ruined them, the older transmissions that shifted harder lasted much longer. Thanks for your comments.
@EricTheCarGuy "after they tried to make them shift smoother they ruined them, the older transmissions that shifted harder lasted much longer. "
this is true but we can't blame it on the tranny . they started to put a less aggressive pcm and that helped . people who buy new cars don't want to feel the shift anymore, but very hard to get that right with this type of set up
Honda automatics are probably one of the most feared pieces of technology on the planet lol. Thankfully, I've only ever had to get into the guts of a manual because of a bad aftermarket LSD.
Anyway, has anyone tried Seafoam Trans Tune or heard anything about it?
The transmission didn't slip in any of the gears however it would hesitate to shift in different ways, nothing consistent in behavior. At 175000 miles it could very well be time to crack it open and rebuild. I drained the transmission and refilled with 3 quarts of fluid and one quart of Marvels, ran it for 38 miles then redrained and refilled with just fluid. It is better, but not cured but seems to be improving. I do not know how much better I can hope for but will keep you posted.
its funny i was the other way about i wouldnt think twice about overhauling an auto trans myself but the first time i did a manual i was like etcg thinking i should have my head examined but now i have done a few i am confident on both setups.

@CultureShockSix you always soak the clutch discs in ATF overnight for an automatic transmission because the clutches absorb the fluid so they don't run dry when you throw it in gear the first time.

Hi I gather it failed again? What went wrong? I think you should try again, it must be possible to work out exactly what went wrong with your repair. Most transmissions have a few weak points with well known fixes or updates.
andrewthompsonuk1 2 months ago
Did you change out the fluid and filter first to see if that helps stop slipping? You got balls trying to tackle a AT.

Thank you.

@wilnerlivesformaiden It would have been better had it worked out. Thanks for the comment.

Pawsandconsider 5 months ago
@Pawsandconsider I actually need to replace the trans in this van still and when I do I hope to make a video but it may be some time before I have the time to do that but I do plan to make a video of the process. As for doing it yourself know that you will need to drop the entire sub frame to get the trans out, it's a pretty involved job for the DIY.
EricTheCarGuy 5 months ago
@EricTheCarGuy yeah very true.. Its garbage now I just opened it up out of curiousity.. Pretty complex inside.. I can image what the bmw 8sp autos look like
TheEsevee 5 months ago
hey i've witnessed this odd problem 2 times about 8 months ago, and 2 times in the past 5 days. Whats the deal?
sacr3 5 months ago in playlist Videos from EricTheCarGuy
@sacr3 I would check the fluid level if it's effected by the elevation angle of the vehicle.

shalisa71 5 months ago
@shalisa71 In fact I've done those in the past but it's been some time, it's usually pretty straightforward however if it's 4WD it presents it's own set of challenges but it's still a pretty straightforward job from what I remember.

TheEsevee 5 months ago

I just can't imagine that the rebuilt replacement should only last 40K
dfelb8 5 months ago 2
@dfelb8 I tried Lucas before I got to this point so no it won't work unfortunately. It's really a design flaw and I'm going to look into a way to update it and present that information should I find it at a future date.
EricTheCarGuy 5 months ago
hi i wonder if u can help me with an advice. something is wrong with my transmission. when i put it in drive it doesnt move at all unless i bring the engine to like 5000 rpm, then it jerks a bit... however if i shift it to 2 then it starts crawling slow and jerks too but keeps moving forward. it even shifts to 2 nd gear. then when i reach like 20mph i can shift it back to "d" and it drives more or less fine.
vitali1985 5 months ago
@vitali1985 It does sound like a transmission issue you might want to check the fluid level and condition first but if it's at the proper level then you probably need a transmission.
EricTheCarGuy 5 months ago

if i accelerae slow i can reach normal crusing speeds of 60-70mph, with normal engine rpm(2500), and i feel it shift through 3rd and 4th gears. if i try to accelerate suddenly at speed of around 30-35mph it jerks too but then i need too ease off the gas pedal... the fluid lvl is ok, i actually added a quart just few days before it happened, but im not sure if it smells burnt...also tcc is stuck on, the obd II says but im not sure if its constant or just a code popped up..

@cbr900rr919 Yea those transmissions are fun but these can be tricky, I suppose if I did more of this work it would be less intimidating. Thanks for the comment.
EricTheCarGuy 6 months ago
@EricTheCarGuy they didn't do any automatic transmission repair in the school you got your ASE cert. from? Not all do but certain colleges will teach you how to repair a certain company. and it helps in rebuilding others like this one. i have never gotten into any asian transmissions. they dont look fun. i still think the non electronic transmissions are better. no solenoids to go bad and computer problems. it seams the lock up and electronic transmission's go bad sooner than the older ones. IMO
cbr900rr919 6 months ago
@cbr900rr919 Yes and I wouldn't be a master tech if I wasn't certified in auto trans, the school nor ASE covers these transmissions however as they are different than most automatics out there.

@cbr900rr919 "Transmission" when you go to school and taking the test, you learn one type of transmission. In the real world is another story. If it easy, i would not paid big bux.
Trust me, every model, year, manufacture is slightly different on its design.

Yikes! You're an ASE Master Tech and you think you needed your head examined to this - that really knocks my confidence down that I could do it....
MrTee448 6 months ago
@MrTee448 Yea especially considering I drove the van to the shop from my house across town and it was my only ride home so in essence I had to do this in about 9 hours, hope it worked and drive home. Perhaps if I took a bit more time and worked in a cleaner environment I would have been less apprehensive. Automatic transmissions are the most complicated system on any vehicle and you need a good working knowledge of them before you decide to tackle them I don't recommend it for the DIY.

DtoWnSux1 7 months ago
@DtoWnSux1 Since it's a manual trans I don't believe you have much to worry about, just change it with Honda fluid and you should be fine.
EricTheCarGuy 7 months ago
@EricTheCarGuy alot of ppl say that to me. but i got to ask. why is it safer just cause of it being a manual? im confused
DtoWnSux1 7 months ago
@DtoWnSux1 Manuals don't use the fluid to operate the trans where automatics can't function without fluid. All your doing inside a manual trans is lubricating parts, in an auto trans the fluid not only lubricates but it also performs critical functions that operate the trans and as a result of this it wears out differently than it's manual counterpart.

EricTheCarGuy 7 months ago
did you have the same symptoms 2 months later? i.e. the second gear clutch slipping? it doesnt look like you replaced any clutch piston seals or mainshaft/secondary shaft teflon rings.. i just did my odyssey transmission, and i replaced the 4 clutches and all the o-rings and teflon rings. I had a problem with losing 1,3,4, and reverse after a couple minutes of driving. second was the only gear that actually held. but it had been doing an awful 1-2 flare for months prior. thanks for the vids
fridofrida 8 months ago
@fridofrida No it just went out. I didn't have much hope for this working in the first place because it wasn't a 'proper' rebuild I was just trying to see if I could do it on the cheep.
EricTheCarGuy 8 months ago
Im curious to know if you got the right amount of play in between the clutch pack and the top ring where it hold it from moving. Because if not it will cause it to fail prematurly.
pawtnahshipp101 8 months ago
@pawtnahshipp101 I'm aware that could be an issue and probably should have taken more time with this 'rebuild' but I just didn't have the time or money at the time, I knew it was a shot in the dark but I decided to take the chance. It did fail about 2 months after this video. Thanks for the comment.

@robertfrate Make sure that the vehicle is warm and OFF when you check the fluid, Honda's are different than many others in that respect.

robertfrate 9 months ago
@robertfrate The 4 cylinder transmission is not the same. I would not advise taking apart an automatic transmission unless you have the experience and the tools, in fact this trans failed again 2 months after this repair.

EricTheCarGuy 7 months ago

PeterGriffin4200 10 months ago

Trainsmaster 10 months ago
@Trainsmaster It could be the solenoids but to be honest in my experience (I was replacing 2 sometimes 3 Honda transmissions a day) it's usually the transmission sorry.
EricTheCarGuy 10 months ago
@EricTheCarGuy I'ts alright I figured that was the case but I wanted to ask a what you thought with your experience and all. What do you think about used trannys from salvage yards with about 90K? I know it's a gamble but I can't afford a new one nor really a remanurfactured one either. This may be a stupid question but would a machanic be willing to swap the tranny if I already got thre replacement one? Thanks again for all your feedback I can't stress enough how much I appreciate it!
Trainsmaster 10 months ago
@Trainsmaster Given that they are known for going bad I don't think a salvage yard trans is the way to go as it could just last a couple of months and your right back where you started. I don't stand behind any work I do with customer supplied parts but I do with the parts that I supply and I would say that is typical.
EricTheCarGuy 10 months ago
@vitok503 I bought this stuff through Honda, but you should be able to at a transmission jobber or auto parts store.
EricTheCarGuy 10 months ago
Hi Eric, as u know, Honda recommends drain, fill, drive, repeat up to 4 times to change max amount of the fluid because the fluid in Torque Converter stays in during the drain. So when I lifted the front and drained the fluid on my Ody, I then started the engine and ran thru some of the gear (with the F wheels up) to remove max fluid. More fluid does come out. I figured there's minimal strain on tranny with wheels up. I check fluid level after refill. Is this a good idea, and safe, or a no-no?
jjashik7 10 months ago
@jjashik7 There should not be an issue as long as you turn the traction control off, if not the ABS will kick in. To be honest that method is not really necessary if you change the fluid about every 30K as that is what is recommended by Honda. However if it's been a while since it was changed or someone put dextron in there that method would work very well.
EricTheCarGuy 10 months ago
i would have also replaced the torque converter with a DAACO unit. Good luck, these transmissions are horribly unreliable. Great post, however!
darcygoesfast 11 months ago
@darcygoesfast No worries, three months after this it went out again. It is true as I've put my fair share of these transmissions myself. Thanks for the comment.
EricTheCarGuy 11 months ago
@EricTheCarGuy Eric let me start by saying i'm a big fan. great vids. My question is on an 00 Nissan maxima with 130K miles on it since i owned the car for about 5yrs never had a tranny drain and filled or flushed. I called this shop today and he recommended the flush over the drain and fill. But i read the outcome of a flush can be a gamble. what you recommended? the tranny is shifting fine BTW. Thanks in advances
antonio30824 11 months ago
@antonio30824 No matter what if you haven't changed the fluid in a while it's a gamble. Personally I would do a drain and fill before a flush but as I said either way you may end up with a problem in the end. Good luck.
EricTheCarGuy 11 months ago
Ok, back on Mom's 97 Accord. It has 150k on it and the auto trans fluid is brown and I'm sure never changed. I have read you can only drain and fill 3qt at a time. My fear is this, it shifts a bit hard and I have heard horror stories that if you start changing fluid the tranny could die. I of course would only use genuine Honda fluid and probably do 3qt a week for a few weeks and not all at once. I don't know, AT's always scare me. I also have an 04 Dodge Dakota AT with 75k what about that?
jonpallan 11 months ago
@jonpallan It is true that there are times when you change the fluid like that it could do more harm than good but the truth is you won't know until you try and in some cases you will actually 'fix' a problem rather than cause one. Good luck.
EricTheCarGuy 11 months ago
@jonpallan Dodges make the worst AT transmissions ever. I would drop the pan and change the filter with the fluid. But It's likely to fail whether or not you maintain it. 3 friends with dodges in the last 2 months had their Auto trannys die under 70k miles. So at 75 you're already lucky.

Reps at Honda dealers dont get it n ask me to show it. which with my luck doesn't happen around them. i will make a vid to demo it.

used the helm book that walks you thru it step by step and it was a piece of cake . they give you the specs for the throw on the clutch pack ,all you need is a dial indicator and a micrometer . with their instructions I went through every thing even the valve body. with out the book I wouldn't have known about the left handed thread on the counter shaft.

@idontcare80 I haven't tried it so I really couldn't say.
