Yes the Music is Latvian, and the lyrics are Russian, and it's about a Georgian painter, but for those who always like to say this is from this country or that other country ect,ect. Don't forget that when this song was written and Recorded Originally by Alla it was only One Nation...The Soviet Union, so i guess this is technically a Soviet Song!!!

Although I think you may have a point, this is an originally Latvian song, written by a Latvian composer and Latvian poet, and - yes - during Soviet times.  Here is the original.

Pugachyeva, Reznik made this Latvian song immortal.

This song is in Russian, written by a Latvian composer Raimond Pauls and it is based on a beautiful, TRUE story of love, which really happened in Tbilisi, Georgia. The name of the artist was Niko Pirosmani and the actresses' name was Margarita. When Raimond Pauls visited Tbilisi with Alla Pugacheva, someone told them this story during their walk in romantic Old Tbilisi - a historic part of town. Raimond Pauls was so moved by it, that soon after, he wrote this song. Translated in 8 languages.
