Saw him in a small club in Glasgow. he played bass with Quasi and then his own set. There was 30 people there it was one of the best gigs i've ever seen.
@AcerStudiosTV What... how can you comment on a video with Elliot Smith and say that its boring without asking for trouble. You just store into the face of talent, something that you will never have.
elliott going live on jools to perform this song was probably the greatest "Hey Mom, I'm on TV!" moment in history. especially THIS song ("XO, mom"). i wonder how she reacted.
some people are glad this guys dead so they wouldnt have to listen to his later years mediocre music??? who are you people? i dont wish david bowie dead because i dont like, i cant even name newer songs but dead? as if this musicians werent people with families and are only here for your benefit. wow
I'm aware it's very cruel to say this, but I'm glad Elliott's dead, because his discography is finite, and in that sense, it's perfect. He is immortalized, and is well deserving of that label. I worry that if he ever understood his relevance, it might have corrupted the beauty of his music. In a way, the base purity of lyrics like "I'm never gonna know you now, but I'm gonna love you anyhow" cannot be shattered, because they are self-contained within their own beautiful (and incredulous) sphere.
@LosSkeltosMusic I disagree, but I do know what you mean. Everytime I found a new song, or a cover, or a live show he had done, it was such an incredible experience. His less well-known tracks are my favourites. I just wish I was able to have more of those moments, and see him in concert. I never got to see him here in England. It makes me so sad.
@LosSkeltosMusic "I'm glad Elliott's dead" isn't the most eloquent way to put it, but I absolutely get where you're coming from. It's a weird sort of dichotomy: He was a brilliant man, and his early passing is truly a shame. Yet, if he was alive today, he would have released 5 to 8 additional albums, but they would (realistically) have some degree of mediocrity. The very fact that he's no longer with us makes his body of work that much more precious.
@LosSkeltosMusic Look at almost any musician whose career was cut short (Hendrix, Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, etc.), and compare them to guys like Bob Dylan and David Bowie, who have been around forever. I mean, I love Bob Dylan and David Bowie, but their respective bodies of work aren't nearly as perfect as those of any highly-regarded musician that unfortunately passed at a relatively young age. If you live long enough to record 30 albums you're going to inevitably lose your touch at some point.
@MercuryClock That was pretty much my point, yeah. I was pretty drunk when I wrote that comment, I almost never comment on Youtube - but I was pissed and the song really struck a chord.
I would certainly have loved to have heard him finish the "From a Basement on the Hill" sessions. I'd also add that Elliott is the most consistently brilliant artist I've ever heard. I was just glad that he never released anything bad, that being such a rare thing.
On a related note, today is the anniversary of his death. Being a bit odd, I'm celebrating it all St.-Ides-Heaven-style and getting wrecked listening to his stuff. I guess my point is that I'd rather he was alive, but I'm incredibly thankful for the impeccable quality of what he actually released.
A troubled genius, but a genius nonetheless. Always amazed when I see him live what a fantastic guitarist he was too. Amongst the beautiful songs and melodies people forget how great he was on guitar. One in a million. RIP Elliott.
i don't understand why everyone thinks he's like a sad sac or somthing, to me his music is just like really cool, and chill and sarcastic, and beautiful all at the same time, sometimes his lyrics seem like despair but to me it's just more realistic than some happy shit
What a great performance! Elliott, you are so missed, thank you so much for what you gave us. This performance brought tears to my eyes <3 I just want to give him a big hug and take away his pain.
Elliott Smith never seems to make his voice any louder. You might notice that he never uses mic techniques like moving closer or farther from the mic. I once read someone describing his voice as a "long thin spider web." He has a nice voice though.
@earwoodable yeah, I recently read something from a guy that recorded a lot of his material that his singing was especially quiet, which to be fair, is part of why his voice is so beautiful
please check out my son on primussux (channel) and theDIMENSIONchannel (channel) he plays originals and covers...guitar player, singer, songwriter...very talented :) thanks:)))
at tops hed have played one more song, and maybe done a 3 minute interview or something. later with jools holland is a kind of showcase of lots of different up and coming and old famous artists, so it wouldnt have had a great deal (if any) other elliott stuff on the show.
Your totally right. Elliott Smith was the master of Darkness and despair, even though after his first 2 albums made him want to change his musical direction. He didn't want anyone to basically think he was this dark person. XO is his Major Record Debut but I think Arguably Self titled is Elliott smith at his peak.
if ur listening to more elliott, there's no way you can skip either/or...still his best album in my opinion (even though the albums to follow still blew me away)
@matthez either/or! or basement! i've gone thru a phase where i've loved pretty much all of his albums 'best' but on revisiting, my favourites are definitely those two. probably basement. i know it seems to get a lot of disappointed reviews off some people but i really think that the direction elliott had started to take was amazing. better songwriting and unbelievable production, in my opinion. not to say that all the songs were better, but as an album i feel it worked better as a whole.
@plxplxkthx no way! dont you think 'basement' is kinda front-loaded? after 6 or 7 tracks it really tails off. Had elliot finished it himself I would imagine that it'd be up there with the other 5 though
@tidymcshmeidy the first bit is probably better you're right, and i hate 'twilight' - that's the only mediocre tune of elliott's i could think of. but then what about 'the last hour' or 'shooting star' or 'memory lane'? there might be a few forgettable tunes but i love the production and i think it's best songs are his best songs probably.
