  • As much as i love the music of The Smiths, Morrissey is such a pretentious c*nt.

  • @Jonpalmer1000 no he really isn't pretentious.

  • why did you cut out the songs

  • I don't get when people say morrissey is miserable either, he looks pretty gay to me

  • The great john peel.

  • wheres part one pig dog bastards.

  • RIP John Peel x

  • no part 1?

  • @alittlehorse

PART ONE was ordered removed by a fascist record/TV company or somethin'. Please PLEASE PLEASE let me let me let me let me get PART ONE this time!

  • @earinsound WMG have blocked it. FUCK Warner Music Group!

  • Irony.. a glutinous sea of irony..

    Bit sick of it really..

  • Indie thing is balls. Any modern "hip" type will up his indieness by going on about The Smiths, even though he gets it from Itunes. Fact is, M and M didn`t do indie as a statement - just cos it gave them total control over their art. Independent label. Simple business plan. Indie bullshit gives them disservice: this music is rock and pop, stands alongside The Who, The Beatles, The `Stones, Simon and G, Pink Floyd. Greatness. No album fillers. Sheer class.

  • Very stressful. My dad booked a trip to Kos island. We couldn`t understand how to set the timer for the VHS, and when we would be in flight, this was on the telly. I spoke to my auntie, to do the job, but she was unreliable. More stress. Eventually turned out the trip was booked the following week. What a relief. Time was not against me now.

  • I just realised Morrissey uses terrible grammar in many of his songs. I wonder how he got a job working for the social security office?

  • if any one ever gets sick of the smiths, (which is impossible so this knowledge is probably useless).........read Gerard Manley Hopkins - similiar style to Morrissey. but hopkins is the Master. Pity there was no Johnny Marr backin the 19th century to compliment him. Woah theres a mad thought. this weed is Good,.

  • SO WHAT THE f*** HAPPENED TO PT.1 THEN GUYS??? uSELESS POST!

  • This was broadcast about two weeks after they split up. Also a day or two after that notorious storm blew the aerial off my family's house. Thus I have the most fuzzy video imaginable!

When the Smiths came along the leftfield genres of the day were "Alternative" and "goth". In the USA the phrase "new wave" was still in use, albeit to describe anything vaguely non-mainstream (eg. Duran Duran, Cyndi Lauper) It's use in the UK was over (mainly having been used 78/79) The Smiths were Different.

  • this is the best doc on the smiths. i want buy it but there is only re-package, repackage, reissue.. of the wrong thing!

  • Were they not signed to independent label Rough Trade thus making them an 'Indie' band.. I apologise for not being old enough to know the specifics of their appropriate genre.. all hale the knowledgeable King Nigel..

  • forget the bullshit, its all about marr's early smiths songs on guitar.

  • Secret crush Jo O Keefe, rest in peace.

  • Indie saved music, and The Smiths were the best of Indie...

  • @Howieeeeex CAn you please not peg that stupid term on them. In the 80's they were called New Wave and what will they be called in ten years. But indie god that term is so over used.

  • I get cross when people say Morrissey is miserable too!

  • Shaun Duggan tells it like it is!

  • Orchestral Manoeuvres?! I love those guys!!!

  • I think the music cene these days is very similar to what is was during the 80s. It seems. None of it is of any interest and encouraged not to be important. I think it's because of X Factor. Between Pete Doherty doing nothing but being a little english icon without wrighting anything interesting since the first Babyshambles album all the way to what I call the Emo indie KKK, Kings of Leon, Keizer Chiefs and Kasabian.

  • Senan, thats fucking john peel. The greatest DJ of all time. He was a brilliant man, you should be the one killing yourself for disrespecting a true ledgend, you inconsiderate twat.

And everyone thinks morrissey is a arrogant idiot. I say he has a right to be arrogant, he is the best singer to grace the world from the best band to grace the world. I adore them.

  • haha..ur man sayin i dont lugh at anything much...buy a rope u emo cunt

  • sometimes misereable sometimes not, whats the matter? he´s great and deeply touchin.

  • 6:17.. you have to love John Peel, bless him.

  • haha that's the nme idiot that was on the britpop documentary years later

  • There is something strange about the way Morrissey talks.

    I can't pinpoint it.

  • @FingersOnLips it's called an overbite.

  • @mrmrscosanostra underbite

  • a box bedroom rebel

  • part 1?

  • bloody WMG fucked it up propably...as usual !!!

  • i don't know. haha. i guess there is none? lol

  • 3:12........would get tapped.....

  • Lol, at 2:50 is that music critic a priest?

  • Handsome Devil ;)

  • what song is that at 2:08

  • the song is called "What Difference Does It Make?"

  • handsome devil

  • The smiths are legends. Morrissey is the greatest man ever to write music. Johnny Marr is an amazing guitarist. The other to didn't do much at all. They are so underated!

  • They were equally as important. The drummer wasn't so good, but Andy was amazing at bass.

  • Obviously, you don't know The Smiths.

  • who is johnny marr referring to when he said "synthsizing duo", "mixing metaphors", "corny metaphorical lyrics", "18 syllable names"? it's funny, but who is he referring to?

    the smiths rule!!!!!

  • I think Johnny is just reffering to Bands like 'Spandau Ballet' and 'Orchestral Manouvres in the Dark' who had big complicated, pompous names, glamourized like typical popstars of the time and had very cheesy lyrics.

Whereas The Smiths decided to do the exact opposite by representing the ordinary people of the time and giving themselves the most common name in Britain; Smith. As well as completely changing the way music was played in the 80's.

  • oh i see..thanks man..

but, does depeche mode belong to those "glamourized like typical popstars" back then?

  • No, because Depeche Mode have some substance to them.

  • Orchestral Manouveours in The Dark, Frankie Goes To Hollywood etc.

  • Re-union?

No. Since he slipped and fell off the plinth Mozz is quite happy to re-paint it every year to cover the rust. A bit like the Forth Bridge.. Celebrated, but somewhat neglected since it's heyday.

  • John Peel: The inventor of LOL perhaps?

  • I invented LOL

  • I don't know why people talk about or lust after The Smiths getting back together. The Smiths were The Smiths - amazingly brilliant. Morrissey is Morrissey - fantastically amazingly brilliant. Times have changed, people have changed, things move on. Moz needs to concentrate on his health right now... Best wishes, Moz - get well soon - so you're right for October!!

  • Yeah, he does. I wonder what it is he's suffering from, I just hope it's nothing serious. He seems to take good care of himself.

  • because lots and lots of people just want to relive the atmosphere! they never heavily relied on having alot of energy on stage like rock bands.. i for one REALLY want to see them live, cudnt care much about a new album IF they got back together.

  • I see a lot of reformation talk, but the songs were made in a very specific period in Moz's life, so I don't know about singing them as a 50 year old man. He'd really have to be choosey about which ones to sing and which ones to put to bed. Plus, they could never put old grudges aside, so seeing them perform even though we know there's still all that deep hatred would'nt be worth it for me. M

  • Does ANYONE know where the missing part 1 is to this series of video clips??!!!

  • It's probably WMG or something.

If there going to remove videos, they should at least not do a sloppy fucking job of it. Now I have to watch it in bits and pieces.

  • This edited that no fun at all!

  • part 1?

  • people back then just seemed so much more english and proper than they are today... the smiths are the best band ever

  • Great to see this again! Had it on vhs vedio tape but my mum recorded over it .. all those years ago!

  • Where's part 1?

  • I agree... where is part 1?

  • i listened to all kinds of music, to practically everything. the smiths and morrissey are the only relevant band for me.

  • Amen!

  • i dont think im a boy anyway? hahaha

  • What bands did mike joyce say at the beggining i heard the human league wat was the other

  • OMD Ochestral Manouvers( in the Dark.)

  • dank

  • Shaun 'wotsit' ended up a very successful writer, and wrote for Eastenders, Brookside, and various other successful television programmes. I think it's great that certain kids in the eighties had something with which they could identify. They weren't harming anyone, they just really loved the music.

  • but ofcourse, there is the undoubtedly very significant Morrissey..

  • never has there been a band so significant.. i have discovered and liked many bands\musicians....but i always return to The Smiths....infact,they never left.

  • @12321qwa BE NICE TO SEE PT.1 THO HEY.

  • @12321qwa The Beatles?

  • "I don't think i'm a boy" Well, I was wondering what sex you are...

  • Love The Smiths,Love The Smiths,Love The Smiths,Love The Smiths,Love The Smiths,Love The Smiths,Love The Smiths...

    I do!

  • course they should never reform ..... the greatest things always end in their primme... but i still cant help disliking joyce even though yes they all made the smiths.... but you have to admit johnny marr and morrissey contributed a hellavu lot more

  • Why should any of you care about the financial situation of any of them? Or their personal relationships? Get a freeakking life.

  • BTW, Marr cracks me up when he mentions the fact of bands being synthesized, writing lyric with corny metaphors and having eighteen syllable names. The Smiths, a glorious time!!!!

  • if they were to reform ( which I doubt will ever happen) they would seem ridiculous. I personally prefer the spirit of the Smiths lingering around, and besides, they would never be able to perform the way they once did, especially Morrissey. Looking back, part of the magic was their youth and the 1980's. I prefer the malincoly and nostalgia which keeps them alive and makes their music timeless.

  • that lady disturbs me. i thought she was a nun. class band mind

  • DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND. I AM IN LOVE!!!! yeah they shouldn't reform. i agree wholly with pavementfiend.

  • God, i love johnny marr...

  • I've got no real gripe about Joyce. The band wouldn't reform anyway. He did what he had to do. I regret the band didn't have a proper manager and sort out royalties before they split.

  • yeah, the smiths will never reform. ive been a smiths/morrissey fan for 25 years

  • No real Smiths fan wants to see them reform anway

  • How much of a betrayal would that be?

  • rockchic21-

i agree he ruined the smiths because now moz can't stand the idea of reforming because of him

  • He's still a great drummer and without Joyce the smiths wouldn't be the smiths. EVERY member of the smiths made the smiths
