@MLBLTopGear ok the JB/RB are old bro and no i listen to Hiromi Uehara, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Dizzy all of which have the element of surprise in there playing. This is so predictable. I know where the chords are going to go which does not excite me very much thats why its boring.
Woah! That is some seriously awesome funk! The good old Im-IV7 progression still works as well as ti ever did and the simple trick of adding a unison lick really helps define the different sections of the song. And then when he goes WAAAy outside, it almost sounds atonal, but it actually all makes sense. Great stuff!
i was afraid a hairy naked man form the seventies was going to come on stage and make love to a blonde chick from the seventies at the beginning there. we all god lucky
@Diomenesx What about James Brown's bassist, he would loop a groove for 15 minutes, and you'd think playing the same thing over and over again is easy, I tell you now, it's not!
Jeez, look how fat Herbie's hands are! I guarantee that is all muscle from playing for so long. Most athletes can show off their biceps or 6 pack, but I see Herbie's hands and know not to fuck with that guy, whether that's musically or physically. I'll bet u he could knock someone out with a bitch slap. I know if I got bitch slapped by Herbie Hancock I'd probably wake up a few days later and thank him for the sense he knocked into me.
I kinda agree w/ ihatekomeini. I like this version - it grooves and Herbie's soloing is always inspiring - and although I like the guitar sound, i also miss the more organic/warmer analog/vintage '70s tones, but the truth of the matter is this: Nothing beats the original 1973 studio version from 'Headhunters' - THAT is a classic, untouchable piece of genius music.
It's pretty cool, but it sounds so awful compared to when he played it in the 70s, so digital, and that guitar sound (imo) is just awful! Drums are heavy though!
@mynameaborat993 if Herbie sucks why dont you go on stage.... oh wait its because your a pathetic asshole who cant appreciate a pure genious so go fuck off please

That was just hot. The sound, the performance, I'm 16 years old and i love this music. Respect goes out to those who have gotten to listen to this kind of music all their lives and truly appreciated it. I've played piano for 11 years now and i am dying to learn to sound 'this funky.' Herbie Hancock is a truly talented musician.
@middlyman if you want to learn to sound "funkier" then study more jazz instead of classical, learn to swing, learn to accent the up beats and what chords make up the funkiest sounds.
I'm pretty sure that's a Yamaha bass, and at times there's a bit of fuzz mixed in with the clean tone. One of the biggest challenges for a bassist is to play an ostinato line like that one several hundred times in a row without screwing up!
@Crusada54 Umm youre sadly mistaken. Aint nobody out grooving Dennis Chambers. Colaiuta did a good job, but Dennis' pocket is tucked down in the shoes.
