  • I wonder whether the instruments played by the musicians are the same as those mimed on screen as the rarely played vox humana appears (a military tenor oboe of the period and mainly used outside the military in west gallery bands which might well have performed for social functions). Charles Spicer of the Mellstock Band plays one in someof their recordings but told me that the musical 'rewards' were not worth the effort expended. If it was actually played here I wonder who was the performer?

  • I love this mini-series. I also love the '05 adaptation. Firth and Macfadyen both played excellent portrayals of Darcy. Both so astonishingly handsome, too!

  • Where can I watch the whole movie?

Is it protected like the John Wayne movies?....where it fades, unkown, into obscurity?...."Protected" by some caring but misguided agency?

  • After watching this version of Pride and Prejudice I can't help but think that the actors in the 2005 version are people pretending to be Austen's characters while Ehle and Firth ARE Elizabeth and Darcy!

  • my ONLY problem with this version is that (to me) jane isnt pretty enough. shes always made out to be this beauty by reputation and everyone finds her just mesmerizing. i dont want to be mean but i cant see that.

  • sexy moves

  • The 1995 version of p & p in my opinion was such big success because the casting was just perfect ,being the the two leading actors were a mix of American and British ,the very best that was available at the time . What wonderful acting ,which is just world class . I believe that this film just set the highest standards for others to always look up to . Well done Jennifer and Colin ,we are all very proud of you . (from over the pond )

  • Brilliant acting from both leading characters ,the very best ,and it is so gratifying to see that the quality is being portrayed from the book to the film . Thankyou for posting a small taste of this epic film on youtube video . (from over the pond )

  • Although I enjoy parts of the 1995 version, I do still prefer the one from 1980. That being said, I do like the music in this scene very much, but am having trouble finding out where to find it.

  • @regularunregularity The song and dance are called Mr. Beveridge's Maggot :) You can find it on here.

  • @Nonsenseandstuff1 That's great, thank you!

  • @Nonsenseandstuff1 what a weird name for such a beautiful piece of music!!! thank you nevertheless for letting us know :)

  • I love the dance.

  • thankfully this scene bears so much resemblance to the one in the book. i would never really make out what they're saying if not so. "we each of an unsocial taciturn disposition and (would not speak?) unless we expect to say something that will amaze the whole room"

  • Sexual tension?? Where?

  • @Roseecactuar - don't say you can't feel that??

  • @GitteParis I feel tension alright, but not sexual :S

  • more than half the time i hav no idea wat they're saying. but i still love this movie.

  • You can just FEEL the tension!! I love it!!

  • He's always a perfect Darcy, Whether Bridget Jones or Pride and Prejucide... He's always a perfect Darcy =D

  • i love this adaptation of pride and prejudice! i have seen it so many times. i enjoy the 05 version too, as a romance, but the 95 version just really brings jane's characters to life on the screen. i watched this before i read the novel, and i think i enjoyed the novel even more then i would have if i hadn't watched this beforehand.

  • 2005 version was made to satisfy younger audiences hollywood style, it looks ridiculous to me specially the scene under the rain, it seems pulled out of one of those cheap romantic pocket novels.

  • "sexual tension"? who the hell wrote that description? I guess a man.

  • i know this version is closer 2 the book and everything but i didn't like it that much i gat the feeling that they are acting the whole time ..i prefare the 2005 vesion it has alot more passion .and i don't know they seem the real lizzy and darcy to me

  • @catty1418 how old are you? 14?

  • @catty1418 I'm agree with danax2007. The 2005 version is cheap romantic movie "Hollywood style" and nothing more. 1995 version is real screen version of Jane Austen's masterpiece. I bet that you didn't even read the book, 'cause if you did you'd understand that American "P&P" is ridiculous, actors are inept and everything in this movie is anti-Austen, anti-British, anti-classic.

  • I don't understand why everyone hates on the 2005 version of P&P. Yes this one is closer to the book, by far, but it's also over 6 hours long so it can include alot more information. And though I do love this version, I think the other version shows so much more passion from Mr. Darcy. I love both.

  • Um, I prefer the OTHER Mr. Darcy, but this movie looks great, i'd like to watch it. But the other P&P, oh my godness, it's so perfect!

  • This is the best P&P, I have watched it over and over. Love Colin Firth as Darcy, he's so handsome. And this scene I love that music, it's so mesmerizing. I wish we could go back to dances like this. It would be so much fun.

  • There isn't a woman alive...who wouldn't want to dance with him! Even this crazy dance!

  • @teeger66 you can say thattt!!!

  • favorite scene aside from the last one <3

  • The best "Pride & Prejudice" for ever!

  • First time I watched this movie was in 8th grade, when I was 12.

    I loved it. completely!

  • Darcy = Tsundere? :D

  • Pefection

  • What's the name of the song!?

  • @Gwynka Mr. Avery's Maggot I believe

  • @MsLissy09 thanx a lot! ;>

  • @Gwynka The song is mr. beveridge's maggot (I know from the book that came with the DVD).

  • @janet444 that was so helpful! I already lost hope to find it :D

  • @Gwynka I'm so glad it helped! I love the song, and the dance, and this scene. :-)

  • does anyone know what the name of the song is or where I can find it?

  • what does sir william mean when he keeps saying "capital! capital!"? does he mean to compliment their dancing?

  • @theCali4niaKid Yes, he's essentially saying 'brilliant, brilliant'.

  • Tearing up the dance floor!

  • Keira -jutty jaw and McFadyen- potato nose crybaby make the perfect Elizabeth and Darcy?!?!?!? You must be joking...

  • @ayannamarie1

Colin midget oldman and Jennifer pregnant looking angsty woman make a BETTER Elizabeth and Darcy?!?!?! Chortle.

My point is, if you don't like it don't insult it. Elizabeth and Mr.Darcy are ambiguous.

  • @dongtian00 What a Hypocrite you are. I believe your other comment has already been flagged for spam so you should practice what you preach. Colin a midget?? You can do better than that surely?? Never said Ehle was perfect either. She has massive boobs and is on the >.uhm>.bigger side to put it mildly but boy can she act. Colin is perfect however.Mcfadyen and Keira should star in "Nose or Jaw-which is mightier!"

  • @ayannamarie1

Well I'm SORRY you didn't get what I meant. MY POINT WAS, if you don't like it don't insult it. Meaning everybody likes their own Elizabeth and Mr.Darcy, so don't go around calling THEIR perfect Elizabeth and Mr.Darcy jutty jaw and potato nose crybaby. My insult was an example of what faults you could point out in YOUR perfect version as you did with keira and matthew. Get your facts straight before you start calling people a hypocrite.

  • @dongtian00 Right so if "JAWS" and Bulbous nose don't do it for you how about caterpillar eyebrows meets pubic like chest hair??Good enough??

  • @ayannamarie1

Whatever, be childish. Have fun. Sorry I didn't realize it in the first place.

  • @dongtian00 What no more sermons to dole out??Thought you were having a ball preaching and POINTING out your point.

  • @ayannamarie1

That was until I realized how childish you were.

  • @dongtian00 Awww so sorry to dissappoint.

  • @dongtian00 Thanks for the laughs both u guyz. However "And I still think Keira Knightley made a better portrayal of Elizabeth...the book clearly said Elizabeth had a lively, playful disposition, this BBC Elizabeth just seems....dead...and not an individual at all." was a comment u left on one of theP&P 95 videos about a month back so I fail to understand what in blazes you are crowing about.

Its just an opinion anyways.Everyone has one.

  • @geneliatalk

Well hey, one can change their opinion after 95 videos. You'd expect that after reading all the BBC vs Movie comments. And I know it's just an opinion, however she was making fun of another persons opinion which is not on. I don't care which is better anymore.

  • @dongtian00 Of course.Opinions are not set in stone. Your comment stuck as I thought what was the point of the negative votes.I prefer to debate the opinion posted or just let it lie if there is nothing to say. Was going to respond and then happened to come across this amusing interaction. No offense meant. Plus this is the 1995 comments section so one can hardly expect a standing ovation if one says 2005 is perfect ,can one?So b4 ayannamarie1 tells me to stop preaching as well- Cheers.

  • This "dance" was the perfect turning point for the characters in this version. Expertly done. Notice the questions and demeanor. These people don't despise each other any longer, they aren't talking about dance or the weather, they're...interested now.

  • I wish i lived in their time, everything is so much better than now, the clothes, the houses, the people are more polite, their speech and their balls!

  • Thumbs up if you agree there's no such thing as the TRUE Elizabeth and Darcy because everybody has their OWN personal Elizabeth and Darcy in their minds.

  • @dongtian00 THANK YOU! I personally think that Keira Knightley and Matthew McFadyn make the perfect Darcy and Elizabeth....but others may think differently and thats ok :-)

  • This was what influenced my first ideas of romance. It was very powerful when I first watched it.

  • colin firth is exactly how i imagined he would be, just like in the book <3

  • I prefer the other version especially darcy in the movie but I think it's personnal and which one you saw first

  • @MileyCalypsoAilinn

I read part of the book then watched the 2005 one, finished the book and followed that with watching the 2005 one again. Was absolutely disenchanted. Watched the 1995 version on the recommendation of a friend. Got to say that the 2005 version is a mutilated and mutated specimen.

  • My favorite scene. I love the way they circle each other.

  • capital, capital!

  • Moo, I hope someday we can dance like this. ;P

  • I love this version! It is my absolute favourite. Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle are the ONLY Darcy and Elizabeth :)

  • I love this version of Pride and Prejudice ,

  • I'd do anything to dance like that with a man...

  • Can anyone tell me what the music playing is?

  • any other men like this series?

  • The name of the music is Mr Beveridge's Magot, brilliant!

  • It's on this Saturday on the Yesterday channel in the UK at 1pm onwards. Indulge.

  • some of the most exciting cinematography i've seen in a long time

  • girl's got a sweet butt

  • Was Sir William Lucas talking about Lizzy and Darcy or Jane and Bingley? And was it about getting married or having a kid?

  • fuck this bullshit noone cares about pride and bullshit

  • @rajkaj77 Yet your watching it, hmmm...

  • @rajkaj77 well guess what? no one here cares about you and your bulls***.

  • @TheStarTrekChick mother fuck

  • I heard they had to refilm all of this because there was a hair obscuring the lens.

  • please somebody for godsake tell me who's the composer of this music???????????????????????

  • @Ajnara Sounds like Beethoven or Mozart... perhaps even Schubert?.... I hope that helps.. x]

  • @Ajnara I have been trying to track it down for the last 2 months it is called....Mr Beveridges Maggot. Written for Country Dance. If you utube the name it will come up.

  • @Ajnara Muddvayne

  • @Ajnara I've also been trying to find the name of this piece of music for ages so thank you @mylillambs for MONTHS!! Thanks for helping me!!!

  • Elizabeth doesn't look as light as portrayed in the book but rather voluptuous..

  • the guy who plays Mr. Darcy looks so familiar. He kind of looks like the guy who plays Thomas Brown in Larkrise to Candleford. Hmm.

  • @darkmoonchaxx Colin Firth

  • Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth are definitely the best Lizzie and Darcy, in my opinion. They offer the most accurate and amusing portrayal of the characters, not to mention that they are the most attractive looking together. It's almost intoxicating, watching this scene and their dance.

I've always liked the song played here very much. Could anyone tell me what it's called? Or perhaps the song that Lizzie plays later on? The one that she sings too. It's very beautiful.

  • Comment removed

  • the actress playing lizzie is too old and mild

  • @hellieweird123 shut up yeah

  • @hellieweird123 a agree with u

  • @hellieweird123 Too old, I grant you, though she does pull youth off very well for someone of her age.

As far as mildness is concerned though, I'm afraid you're mistaken. The character of Lizzie is supposed to be sort of playful and witty, but in a dignified and calm way. She's a rebel and enjoys being different, but is also very preoccupied with her appearance. She tries to maintain a sense of propriety at all times. Honestly, the 2005 version of Lizzie is more like Lydia in her manner.

  • it's actually funny how they can dance like that while talking seriously whereas other couples are seems happy. lol

  • i like the other version so much more. go keira!

  • mr darcy is that your cheese i can smell.they are going to get dizzy

  • I love this scene, the emotion of this scene is so thick that you can feel what they are feeling,.

  • Best version of Pride and Prejudice! The film version was good but not nearly as good as this!!!

  • @ILuvLotte4Eva i think the film was very good . but it was very poetic and like a [painting. everyones interpretation is differnt.

  • My favorite movie of all time. Love this scene!

  • @missevilkitty I don't understand why anyone flagged your comment as a spam. Colin Firth and Jenifer Ehle are in did THE BEST Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth.

  • Oh I love this bit, it is so beautifully done :D I learned this dance a few months ago and it really fun to do, so that gives this adaptation extra credit I suppose:)

I laughed out loud when the dance came in the 2005 version with Keira Knightley and Matthew Whats-his-name. They were not 10 seconds into the dance and she was already complaining Darcy didn't say anything. She was right, he didn't even got the time to open his mouth!

The script was so bad I cringed.

  • They will always be the TRUE Elizebeth and Darcey!!

  • I agree! They will always be The BEST Elizabeth and Darcy!

  • @sarairina: Amen to that. I agree 100%, that Jennifer and Colin are the BEST Elizabeth & Darcy, very sophisticated. Sorry to say, Keira & Matthew did not act that well. Paula

  • I so agree!

  • @sarairina I dare say that this Lizzy and Darcy would not fit in the 2005 version and that ms. Knightley and Mr. Macfadyen would not fit in the 1995 version.

These both versions are totally different from each other and yet I like them equally. Colin Firth shows no emotion at all and this Lizzy (cannot remember her name irl) is also very held back, which suits her perfectly. Dramatic yet held back. Beautiful. Keira is dramatic in a more open way than this Lizzy, but the mood in that film is...

  • @sarairina ... more open than in the series. Therefore Matthew can show more emotion with his eyes than Colin could. Hm... I like them both and I am still swooning over both Mr. Darcy's.

  • @RainWater555 : It is "Darcy" ,not "Darcey".

  • @RainWater555 I agree to! Colin Firth is the best Darcy ever!

  • I agree too!!

  • Ah this is as old as i am I think i prefer the newer actors but this is great too

  • no no !! i prefere keira and matthew!!!!!

  • yeah, me too

  • Just a fantastic series, and the frankly real electricity between them is palpable

  • i really love this what song are they dancing to?

i can't find it on the soundtrack and would really love some help

  • The song is "Mr. Beveridge's Maggot." Great name, huh?

  • I believe it is called "Mr Beveridge's Maggot" (and was also played in the Emma film (Paltrow-version)).

  • When these two people merge, even at the level of a superficial dance, it is something akin to watching two people make love while simultaneously fighting to the death.

Darcy and Elizabeth are the embodiment of watching love develop. At first, I believe, there is a mutual attraction, though Darcy looks down upon Elizabeth, and Elizabeth thinks Darcy defines arrogance. But in this scene they are starting to probe, to flirt intellectually. This begins the second stage of their relationship.

  • it's hard to imagine people fighting to death in victorian england. They were to proper.

  • @RdtheLiterature itsn't victorian era, this last began in the 1830's, while Jane Austen herself died in 1817!!!! it was the georgian era!!

  • I always preferred Ehle to play as Elizabeth. She nails the bright eyes and playful personality bit down to a tee. Still, Macfadyen always seemed to be the perfect dark and quiet Darcy I imagined when I was reading the novel. :) If only they could make another adaption with these to as the main cast!

  • I loved Ehle as Elizabeth! I thought she got it just perfect, but I thought that Macfadyen was too nice, he just doesn't strike you as arrogant and proud, whereas I thought Firth pulled it off amazingly, and I just thought that Macfadyen was too gentle, and sweet. I don't know!

  • I would love to see that. Only the age difference... remember Jennifer played Elisabeth almost 15 years ago

  • I love this version of Pride and Prejudice. For some reason the most recent one with Keira Knightly didn't suit my preference.

  • You're right, I'm sorry.

  • There has rarely been such excellent acting in the parts of Elizabeth and Darcy as there was in this miniseries. I liked 2005 version, but the plot really suffered for having so little of Wickham in it.

@jojojosephinejojetta, clean up your mouth. You are acting like an angry child.

  • your language = your manners

  • Ehle was 25, you need glasses,

you prefer a peace of plastic : keira

    haha , what a joke

  • especially The 2005 Darcy has more emotions as well as struggling,Firth is like a puppet.

  • The 1979 version is closest to the book.

  • I saw 2005

    I saw 1995

    I can't remember something of 2005

    I recall everything of 1995

  • 2005 is niks vergeleken met 1995.

    Colin Firth rules.

    Matthew whats his name..not

  • I always love how they just talk, dance, turn and start talking again...its so ...fun

  • I will not watch this again, because I HATE the Venus commercial.

  • I like both versions, this one has better acting and is more accurate to the book, but the other one has much better cinematography and to me that's important (probably because everyone in my family is a photographer) and it got me more emotional about every scene. So I like them both equally :)

  • After seeing this version I can't watch the movie without being disappointed with the major clipping of script

  • i agree with bretchops, not ALL of the new generation is willing to put up with a movie that chopped a classic practically in half. :]

  • Knightly grade D

    Ehje grade A

  • EXACTLY!! one of the best heroines of nineteenth century literature, acted perfectly!! Keira was too wooden!

  • Keira was to confrontational to be truly liked by any nineteenth century Gentlemen, where Ehje's Lizzy was far more subdued and charming (from a guys perspective that is)

  • I don't understand why everyone is calling her Ehje. It's Ehle!

But I do agree with you. All respect to Keira Knightley (liked her work in Atonement), but her Lizzy was flagrantly modern, as was the whole production. The BBC adaptation is not only historically accurate, but also more emotionally convincing. IMO.

  • Does anybody know the name of this dance and dance music? It's also used in The Tudors which means this music was also played in 16 century.

  • it's called Mr Beverdidge's Maggot, and it was also used in the movie 'Emma' ('96) :)

I love both versions of Pride and Prejudice; each one made me fall in love with it. One of the most beautiful stories that where ever written - probably the best =]

  • I love the look on Lizzy's face when Sir Lucas talked to them.

  • I enjoyed both versions, but I loved this one! it follows the book very well. This book is classics, why would you change anything what's already good. in 05 part - Mr.Darsey looked so in love with Lizzy,he didn't look proud to me, he was supposed to look proud! And what was that silly laughter of Keira when she saw Darcy's house?they also changed the portrait to a statue, for what?picture was better I think.new one is for new generation, not many people nowadays will appreciate 95 version.

  • I wouldn't say that. I'm thirteen and I absolutely adore this version. I disliked the 05 version very...ardently. None of the characters were right, the story was wrong. I don't know, I just didn't like it but I'm in love with this one.

  • Same here!

Colin Firth, as much as he'd like to believe otherwise, is the definitive Darcy IMO. I actually think all the characters were very well portrayed in this version. And, I'm sorry to people who prefer the 05 version, but Keira Knightley was not the right choice for Elizabeth Bennet. It's not her best type of character. Not to say that she's a bad actress or anything, but some people can pull off one type of character better than another type, and Keira just can't pull off Lizzy.

  • I totally agree with you. The 2005 could not be compared with the 1995. As you said the actors for the 1995 are well chosen especially Colin and Jennifer.

This 1995 is superb and whole England agreed.

  • Very nice music, does anyone know what it is called? Then I can look for a score on the internet. It also features at the ed of Emma 1996, A&E.

  • Pity it's not a full dance, but nevertheless it's a masterpiece. With all due respect to the dance scene from 2005 movie, this one is way better.

  • she is such an amazing elizabeth bennett!!!!! and Mr.Darcy= utter hotness

  • when i first saw this i thought that Mr. Darxy wasn't good looking either. I thought he was decent but not great but when you watch the rest of the episodes he grows on you and his personailty is attractive so over time he seems perfectly handsome and amazing at his role

  • Yes, I suppose. But I've only watched this one clip and that was kind of an instantaneous reaction. I don't know if that was directed towards me or smeethes, phasmic, but thank you! To preserve my hope that most of the viewers of this clip have taste, I'll assume the -4 is because of my glaring spelling error and not because they truly believe the actor who plays Mr. Darcy is a sexy beast.
