This is probably the saddest ending to a movie I've ever seen- you pretty much know Rose is going to be trapped in the fog world forever, a fate infinitely worse than death, because Alessa will never want to return to the real world. And why would she?
They are in the same house...but they can't interact. However, apparantly, if you, say, open a door in the Other/Fog world, it will open "by itself" in the real world. Supposedly, its not limited to doors....so may they can interact, kind of.
I wonder if we are going to see Christopher return to Silent Hill and search for Rose in the upcoming movie.... like James did looking for Mary in the game SH2?

I think they left the ending that way, so that people can really think about it.. and there could be many explanations of why it ended that way. Basically.. You can think up your own theory of why it ended the way it did... because really, nobody knows.

Rose and alessa could of been dead from the begining in the car crash, or could of not died at all, but decided to stay in the world of silent hill. Silent hill is either for nightmares or the dead.

Rose chose darkness, therefore her soul remained in the alternate dimention

@ar2014: They never said that was the true ending or not. None of the Silent Hill endings have ever been a true ending, it mostly depends on your actions earlier in the game. Besides, it's possible that the In Water ending happened and he never returned because of what happened in that ending.
Well, Laura never even saw the monsters or ever entered the fog world because while she and Mary were hospitalized, Mary told Laura about how beautiful Silent Hill was, so that's how to the town treated Laura.
Alessa's life was one filled with false-prejudice and hate. She went from a benevolent young girl, to being someone who lived for vengeance. She was filled with misery, but also fear. She doesn't want to go back to the real world where she could be hurt again. She has been in Silent Hill so long, she wants to remain where she is safe
Rose and Sharon don't die. Sharon was summoned to Silent Hill for one purpose and one purpose only, to help Alessa be reborn. So, when Dark Alessa (Alessa's evil self) and Sharon (Alessa's good side) recombine, Alessa is fully reborn. She extends her world to create a place reminiscint of where Rose was used to. But, she doesn't want to go back to the real world...
@jackmasta200 The world Alessa created was in retrospect, real, though could not be accessed by anyone Dark Alessa allowed entry to (which is why Christopher was in the normal world.) What I meant by imagination was that that world was a product of Alessa's internal hate. She imagined it, but Dark Alessa made it real. Alessa dragged the townspeople into her world to punish them for their misdeeds. HTH :-)

she and the child are dead. you understand the parallel worlds because of the warm and cold colour - and also because they can't see eachother! the only beautiful part here is when she is saying "we are coming home" the rest is sad!
