I don't think it'll happen exactly that way but its still a good direction. What we have right now is corporatism (with all the bailouts) not free market capitalism.

By making gold a legal medium of exchange, fiat money will have less demand and eventually be phased out as he believes that fiat money is the lesser product. From what I've read, I'm on the fence about this idea. I think fiat and gold co-existing might be a better idea. Despite that I'm still rooting for him because all his other ideas are great.

These are essentially coins made of copper, silver and gold with varying "face values" of 2, 5, 50 etc. They don't say 'dollars' but they are accepted as so, by those who accept them. Check them out. Look up aocsmint. dot com. Certainly, if you are a business, I would accept these metal coins as payment.

If legal tender laws are repealed and competing currencies legalized then it seems I might need to carry several different notes (bills) in my wallet as each merchant might accept only his favorite one (e.g., movie ticket requires FED notes, popcorn requires RONPAUL notes). How big of a hassle would this be for consumers?
I think it might be more like VISA, Mastercard, American Express... not every place takes every card but their general acceptance means the cards are still useful. You might even have a situation where the movie theater posts two prices, one for FED notes and one for RONPAUL notes and of course enterprising individuals will set up convenient currency exchanges for people who have one type of note but need the other.

Very interesting. Seems like it would be creating a quasi-market structure similar to models of public goods. I hope this gets passed, It would really open up the monetary landscape for new sources of currency. There are a few alternative currency systems being used in local communities, but it would be great to see them gain some clout on larger playing fields!

America could purchase gold as a nation and do away with the Fed Res altogether. The government could offer gold bonds to Americans at greatly discounted prices because of the sheer volume of gold being purchased. The bond would secure the gold for the bond holder for a 20 year period in which the Gov. would use the gold for growth. After 20 yrs the bond holder could redeem the bond/weight at the current/greater price.

If legal tender laws are repealed and competing currencies legalized then it seems I might need to carry several different notes (bills) in my wallet as each merchant might accept only his favorite one (e.g., movie ticket requires FED notes, popcorn requires RONPAUL notes). How big of a hassle would this be for consumers?

I think it might be more like VISA, Mastercard, American Express... not every place takes every card but their general acceptance means the cards are still useful. You might even have a situation where the movie theater posts two prices, one for FED notes and one for RONPAUL notes and of course enterprising individuals will set up convenient currency exchanges for people who have one type of note but need the other.

@cleanmrbroadway not exactly, if you open it up to currency competition, that would mean if you have gold backed dollars or gold coins in large circulation, people would realize that they would be better off with gold or silver backed dollars/gold or silver coins then federal reserve notes. so you have to start off by opening it up to competition, then the people would make the smarter decision and dump federal reserve notes, stick with gold/silver. what ron paul envisions.

I find it odd Paul said the the commissions report during the Great Depression was that the fed didn't print up enough money. That's true. We had a great contraction in the money supply.

Very interesting. Seems like it would be creating a quasi-market structure similar to models of public goods. I hope this gets passed, It would really open up the monetary landscape for new sources of currency. There are a few alternative currency systems being used in local communities, but it would be great to see them gain some clout on larger playing fields!

i agree with you... but wishing doesn't really help. there should be organized approch towards tackling this economic system based on debt. i think Americans should start living within their means first and start investing in Gold as a start. and also start business, espeically manufacturing business, as any thing physical is wealth in economics. so producing again makes a difference. stop using dollar and go for alternatives as growing stuff in you own back yard.saves shopping time and no money

he just wants more than just federal reserve dollar notes circulating. so if the central bank tries to play around with interest rates up dow sending the economy into a boom or a bust he wants there to be other money people can turn too so as to keep the economy on a stable course and business activity can continue to carry on. iliminating booms and bust. that means no more recessions and depressions they would become obsolete if competiting currencies existed. He is so brilliant.

The problem now is that since gold & silver are no longer legal tender, you have to pay capitol gains taxes for any rise in value of your gold/silver when you sell it.
If today you pay $1000 for a gold coin, and tomorrow it rises in value to $1500, you'll owe capitol gains for the $500 rise if you sell it; WHEREAS, if you bought a true legal tender $1000 gold coin today, even if there were a rise in the price of gold, it would still be "$1000" tomorrow, so NO capitol gain tax

You should read Murray Rothbard. I used to think the same thing until I read and understood. The problem is that you can't give a government power over individuals, give them a monopoly on the use of violent coercion, and then tell them to limit themselves. The last 200 years is proof that "limited government" doesn't work. Check out the debate between Stefan Molyneux and Michael Badnarik on here and that will address your arguments much more than this limited back and forth.

Yes! Competing Currencies IS What this country needs. This would also, I would assume reinstate the FREE Coinage Act - Where if you have currently in your possession, Gold & Silver Bullion, you can have it minted into Constitutional Sound Money, ie, Gold and Silver coins.

America could purchase gold as a nation and do away with the Fed Res altogether. The government could offer gold bonds to Americans at greatly discounted prices because of the sheer volume of gold being purchased. The bond would secure the gold for the bond holder for a 20 year period in which the Gov. would use the gold for growth. After 20 yrs the bond holder could redeem the bond/weight at the current/greater price.

It's a good bill but it will never be allowed by the US government(or any government for that matter). Ron Paul is cunning, he knows that if his bill passes virtually all Americans would transfer to the private currencies. The Fed will basically be competed out of existence along with most gov't agencies. This is why parasitic states want to regulate/control banking and have a standard currency. I think Ron Paul knows it will never pass he's just pushing it for free market education.

So few people today can grasp the concept of individual freedom. Ron Paul is shocking to those who were trained to think the government should decide everything and rule us and punish anyone who doesn't obey its every dictate, regulation, demand, order etc. Free people would offer many creative opportunities and choices.

Smart man. Let the alternate currency of gold/silver prove itself the best choice through competition. The people will see how much more beneficial it'd be. I just hope there's enough time before the current Fed currency sytem completely fails and chaos pursues....

I would contend that Mandating the thing which has historically been used since the dawning of civilized societies and as long as we have had governments is not only the right thing to do, but it is the thing that is in-line with what happens naturally.

The system we have now is dictatorial & oppressive. I don't see how going back to gold/silver would be as bad or worse. We need to switch back to something of value or worth as a means of paying debt. This competing currencies is a good stepping stone to doing that.

@PersianPaladin I'd rather be paid in gold and silver, not in a paper currency that has no intrinsic value, only the value determined by the Federal Reserve and the Treasury. My income goes down because the value of the dollar goes down. It's an invisible tax. An invisible THEFT.
