Is "Wanderlast" an English word? I'm German and in my language, it means "moving load".. just wondering if the title is German or English or something..?
I think that the male is the one that Rin had fallen in love with but had left before she could tell him. I'm guessing that he traveled to Luka and told her to send a message to Miku (maybe he was gunna be unable to finish his journy and why Luka's singing 'boku'), making this Miku's dream before she woke up in Hello Planet, giving her a reason to travel to the blonde guy (meaning she and the guy Rin liked knew him). This makes the blonde guy the last wanderer.
@Kagura95 Close. Luka is the guy's robot (along with Miku). I'm gonna assume he uses "boku" and she learned to speak by listening to him. She's singing to him in the last moments before he shuts her down and waits for himself to finally die.
1 - The male is singing this and he know he is going to die (that thing about rest and "the end")... but isn't he the last wanderer? So by saying he wants to know the dream of the last wanderer maybe this theory doesn´t fit so....
2- like @mlightj said the male character is traveling with Luka and send a message to Miku (as a mail reach the shelter at the end of HELLO, PLANET) or Luka is another cyborg reading his mind or something...
3 - The singer in both is Miku, this could be the dream she had before waking up in HELLO, PLANET as this express a will to travel and to know the last wanderer's dream.
My impression is that the POV character is traveling, with Luka, and is using her to send a transmission to Miku? Explaining that she/he isn't coming back this time?
In JRPGs, I hear a lot of female characters with Japanese voice acting say "boku" even if they are female. Often assassins, military captains, athletic girls, or others who don't act stereotypically "girly".
Could otomo explain the reason?
My guess was that they choose not to present themselves as overly "girly". Perhaps they feel their role is too serious and "feminine" mannerisms won't come across as serious enough.
Anyway, if they can do it, Luka may do it for the same reason.
I have a hypothesis. That in the Hello, Planet series, Luka and Miku are the same. Why? This song has the transmission cut off (you do not hear destruction or any sign of such in the song) and Miku wakes up in a shelter. Luka uses Boku, Miku.... you don't see her use it in her song. or Watashi, or any first person pronoun upfront. Therefore Miku might be a resurrected Luka. Dunno, hope someone proves me wrong.
I thought the end part, especially with boku, meant they were both singing. Like maybe the person with her started the song and she continued it on even after he had died.
Robots have no gender. :P The character in this song is, supposedly, a robot. While she /is/ depicted as a female in another PV I saw, robots have no gender, and therefore can use "boku, watashi, ore, waghai," or anything of that nature.
Well, since this song is from a automaton's/computer program's/non-organic existance's point of view, and the picture depicts a female, it's probably alright to use "boku" since she'd technically speaking have no gender; we only assume female because Luka's voice is female and because of the picture.
@EpicFailHat I don't think this song is necessarily from a computer/automaton's perspective, it just depends on how you interpret it. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
Is this related to the lyrics that appears on the "Hello, World" game in Project Diva? (posted by vgperson). If that's so, in the story, Luka is a robot just like Miku, who finds the narrator (the last human in the world) unconscious and takes him to a safe place. She doesn't dies, but she's put in sleep mode before the narrator dies.
I really like this version. it's so... i don't wanna say funky because that sounds 70's, but.. it's so cool.... :3 I just like the beat. It's a strange song, but it sounds so cool.
I Really don't like this version. I like the Piano Edit This one is too... disfunctional. The beats and rythms don't quite match in some places with the melody.
For those who still believe it must be a male singer based on the word "boku"...
Another Song in which the singer uses "boku" is "The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku" (Now who believes that the singer of that song is not supposed to be female?)
While boku is usual for a female speaker in real life, it is often used in manga and anime to express the female character's youth and innocence, or tomboyish attitude.
For some examples of the latter, see here: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Bokukko
This song is beautiful, thank you for the subs! Would you like some help with the English, though? I don't know Japanese, but I'm a native English speaker.
I think the connection between the two is that Luka is in Space, in some sort of pod thing, while Miku is on the planet that has been destroyed. It's through the efforts of those two that the planet is restored.
is the like the world is ending and Luka is singing her last song to the world and specifically her master as the world dies? the song is pretty emtional, too.
@otomo1983 It might differ depending on what area of Japan you're in too. Right now, I'm in Wakayama Prefecture and 'boku' is pretty gender neutral here. I hear it being used by girls more often actually, because most boys here use 'ore'.
I'm really trying to understand whats going on. I know that in Hello Planet a nuclear bomb went off and Miku is basically trying to find her friend, only to find out that he died and (to what I've assumed from the images) died of a broken heart as well as intense damage from the journey. I don't know how it goes with this though. Is the singer lamenting about someone before the bomb went off? It seems the lyrics are of her singing in riddles. If someone could piece them story I'd be thankful.
Well, I think that this is in the PV of Miku's friend. Miku wants to rest because she's tired from the journey, thus she says "Like getting an urge to take a trip, everyone requests the place to rest." But then, then the nuclear bomb goes off, or "THE END" and the Earth was rotting, "with neither warm nor cold speed". I can't figure out the other line, but presumably THE GOD is the person responsible, and he put thousands of bombs or "rainbows in the big sky".
@borichaJB Actually, the riddles and stuff are due to the odd, perhaps more accurate translation. The piano PV is more clear on what it is, and has an interpretation on what this song is about.
Actually "boku" as well as "kimi" are commonly used in Japanese songs sung by females, even though in everyday conversation it's not normal for a girl to refer to herself like that. It's been a trend for several years (example: Hikari by Utada Hikaru). But anyway, thanks for uploading the video. :D
A few lines are a little awkward sounding in English, and could be reworked a little bit. For instance I think the last line is a little better translated as "Before I reach the end."
I thought the song was catchy, but never really understood why it seemed the song wasn't meant to be a happy one... then I saw the pv and lyrics... and... T__________T *sob* lol
If you watch both this and Miku's "Hello Planet", the two become almost an entire storyline. They are both really lovely and go really well together. 5 starts.
@NekoNekoMe123 The full story line so far revealed: The Weekend Is Coming! (Rin) --> Our 16Bit Warz (Gumi) --> The "WANDERLAST" (Luka) --> *Hello, Planet (Miku).
The lyrics are so emotional, and the feel of the song is so rich... the melody, synthesis, and the points where the tune switches... it carries emotion as well as the lyrics do!
I love the sense at the end of being fully aware of the approaching fate, but singing blissfully -as if unaware- till the moment of finality.
It's been a long time since I found a new song I can admire so much. <3
It's okay for a female singer to say boku because in some songs watashi sounds too long.

Why, this song strangely reminds me of The Maid of Fire..
ZePomVerte 2 years ago
'Boku' is generally a boy's form of 'I', however, girls who consider themselves tough or strong may also use it :)
AiChiHitokiriSan 2 years ago 7
Also, songs typically use boku regardless of gender.
GRthirty3 1 year ago 12
Hmm, I'm a native Japanese speaker, and I can't agree comments.
"Boku" typically is used by a male.
Japanese female singers occasionally uses "Boku",
but it expresses that the central character of the song is a male.
"Boku" is generally male's word, but it's not felt that he/she is tough or strong.
"Boku" is felt that he/she is young or innocent.

@otomo1983
Yeah, but even in japanese exists the artistical subkind of speech. I know it sounds like a vague response, but It currently happens everywhere.
SacredMiles 1 year ago
@otomo1983 Hmmm...while I agree with you that this song is from a male point of view, boku doesn't always necessarily mean male...
What about the disappearance of Hatsune Miku? She uses boku throughout the whole song for that.
I heard that female singers also use boku because it's shorter and thus easier to put into a song than atashi or watashi.
Insaniloids 1 year ago

Riako 2 years ago 7
Well, I think that this is in the PV of Miku's friend. Miku wants to rest because she's tired from the journey, thus she says "Like getting an urge to take a trip, everyone requests the place to rest." But then, then the nuclear bomb goes off, or "THE END" and the Earth was rotting, "with neither warm nor cold speed". I can't figure out the other line, but presumably THE GOD is the person responsible, and he put thousands of bombs or "rainbows in the big sky".
I'd write more but over count
borichaJB 2 years ago 4
@borichaJB Actually, the riddles and stuff are due to the odd, perhaps more accurate translation. The piano PV is more clear on what it is, and has an interpretation on what this song is about.
chichimi 1 year ago 4
Actually "boku" as well as "kimi" are commonly used in Japanese songs sung by females, even though in everyday conversation it's not normal for a girl to refer to herself like that. It's been a trend for several years (example: Hikari by Utada Hikaru). But anyway, thanks for uploading the video. :D

omg this version is more scary than the piano version to me
but i like it =D
MiamiGodess 2 years ago 2
@MiamiGodess:
This is the original. Piano version is a modified one suitable for human singing (not by the author, but he accepted it).

A few lines are a little awkward sounding in English, and could be reworked a little bit. For instance I think the last line is a little better translated as "Before I reach the end."
But good job, and thanks for the translation!

Thank you for your advice.
I correct it.
otomo1983 2 years ago 5
I thought the song was catchy, but never really understood why it seemed the song wasn't meant to be a happy one... then I saw the pv and lyrics... and... T__________T *sob* lol

It has a good beat but the lyrics is so sad....
thanks for uploading T__T

If you watch both this and Miku's "Hello Planet", the two become almost an entire storyline. They are both really lovely and go really well together. 5 starts.
NekoNekoMe123 2 years ago 13
@NekoNekoMe123 The full story line so far revealed: The Weekend Is Coming! (Rin) --> Our 16Bit Warz (Gumi) --> The "WANDERLAST" (Luka) --> *Hello, Planet (Miku).

Luka must be a Les/Yuri to be fit in this song.

Just incredible!

I think it's just behind her back.

Nah, she doesn't have an arm. I've seen another picture, and there she doesn't have an arm. and other body parts.
This song IS about the "end".
maplenxplayer1 2 years ago 7
It's kind of like Luka's version of Dead End. It's a different song but it has that same feeling to it, specifically the ending...

this is one of my favorite songs by luka.
She sounds really young here. And that makes me kinda smile :)

Has anyone noticed that Luka sometimes uses the male version of I, "boku", instead of the female version?
maplenxplayer1 2 years ago
You're onto something.
It's a part not expressible in my translation.
"Boku" isn't used by general female, so "I" may not be Luka.
otomo1983 2 years ago
Are you sure? I'm not questioning you or anything, but in Luka's other song, "Just be Friends," she was using '"boku" but it was her point of view.
To me it kind of seems like people who make songs with Luka make her seem tomboyish, haha.
iMegurineLuka 2 years ago
I listen "Just be Friend".
The Japanese lyrics is written by the male's viewpoint. However, I don't understand which viewpoint the video is made by.
If the lyrics is written by a female, it's unnatural in Japanese.
Sometimes female singer sings a song that male made.
I guess "Just be Frined" and this song is too.

I see, thanks for the opinion. Added some clarification too. Thanks again.
