Shatner is the man. How many TV icons are still famous 45 years after their series went off the air? Entertainment Magazine had a list of the 50 most famous TV characters and they had Homer Simpson at #1 and Jane Lynch of Glee at #6. Jane Lynch....not even on TV for a year. Captain Kirk was a greater character than those 2 could ever hope to be. Kirk is practically immortal.
Bones fix him!! I am trying Jim I am only a DR. not a Volcan Spock!! Do the mind thingy!! Captin! Captin!!! What!!?? the shields are all DOWN !!! well fix em Scotty!! I want bones too fix this beautiful blonde she is so hot!!! Jim the volcan mind probe dose work. Why!!?? simple put captin, she's a blonde nothing there but umm air...(Bones thinking) hmmm I'd like to lay her myself! ----whew!! I thought I wouldn't make through Shatner's singing OH MY Ghandi! I'm thinking he's drunk lol
The "Shat-Man" has never taken himself too seriously;I remember about this same time he did the game show "The Ten Thousand Dollar Pyramid" ,He was hilarious !!
@umbrellashotgunman Exactly. Shatner knows he can't "sing", & he ain't try'in to. It's really more like, poetry over music. In that sense, how is it really different from rap/hip hop? Well, obviously it's different, but, you know what I mean? Anyway, I like it. I've always liked Shatner's own particular/unique style of acting (& or over-acting) & his word/phrase emphasis. Along with hockey & beer, Shatner is 1 of the best things to ever come out of Canada. {:o)
Only Shatner can make Harry Chapin depressing and I drove a cab for years.. Even getting robbed when the rent was due wasn't this depressing. So my family starved to death! Those were great times compared to Shatner making me this depressed..
Dramatic readings of silly pop tunes backed by the tunes themselves, it's actually quite brilliant in an endearingly eccentric post-apocalyptic funkytown fashion.
"I've got something inside me, to drive a princess blind..."
So, the guy in the song is Gay, then? If not, shouln't that something be inside the princess? "cause that's where I would put it...but that's just me.....
proves that with the right delivery anything can sound like shakespeare..no insult to harry chapin, I love the man...but ya gotta give shatnet credit, he'd make a pa announcement in an airline terminal sound intense..
@ginostats LOL...this doesn't sound like anything CLOSE to Shakespeare to me...I like Shatner, but this is ridiculous. LOVE Harry Chapin, though. Chapin's delivery is perfect.
I can watch all this classic Shatner stuff all night. Fucking MESMERIZED. Like a car crash that you cant look away from...but a GOOD kind of car crash. A happy car crash? WHATEVER. Its fucking SHATNER. Amazing.
The Shat did this in a pink shirt , dont let this detail get by you . Damn shame I cant go back in time and show a laptop computer with a few star trek movies on it to the executives at NBC .I could stop Star Trek from being canceled when they understood it would be a billion dollar industry someday .
This is fantastic - it's not 'singing' per se; it's performing the song. The best one (by far) is Rocket Man - sublime; funny, intelligent, true to the lyrics and intention of the song, and this one's similar.
WOw! I have never seen Shatner do this song before. Nickindetroit is right - He did nail it. Talent.
Say whatever you want about him. But recognize - no editing - no cutaways - no CGI- no prerecorded tracks - his performance is captivating and vulnerable and real (as real as Shatner can be anyway).
@shysterlicious He did this movie about 11 years ago called Free Enterprise with Eric McCormack and at the end he put text from Julius Caesar to a rap beat, backed by an entire posse on stage. Funny.
@shysterlicious He did this movie about 11 years ago called Free Enterprise with Eric McCormack and at the end he put text from Julius Caesar to a rap beat, backed by an entire posse on stage. Funny.
This is a camp classic. I used to seem him do that little "move" @ 2:18 at the end of Star Trek when it was time to wrap the episode and Kirk had to straighten out all the plot conflicts.
What Shatner said about his 'singing' when asked in an interview on the Tonight Show several years ago was: "Yea, we knew it sounded like crap, but we thought most of what the kids were buying at the time did too. So we thought why not give it a shot? Maybe it'll sell." Best explanation I've ever heard about it. .
I love William Shatner, I really do. So don't get me wrong when I say this....but....
.......this is soooooooooo bad! It really is.
Whatever this is......whatever this is supposed to be.....however it is that the rest of us mere mortals are supposed to interpret it (as far as his rendition of this song goes).......regardless.......it's just bad. Plain and simple.

If you approach it like you would a play or an acting lesson, where body language and pathos recieve prominence over melody, then it makes more sense.
@unconventionalmeans Acting is a very subjective thing. It is understandable for someone to criticize an acting technique they have never seen without proper context, but not necessarily fair. It's akin to walking into a community theatre and seeing a familiar person attempting an acting technique you aren't familiar with, and immediately calling him 'soooooooooo bad'. I had the same reaction as you at first. I'm not saying Shatner is a colossal genius, just don't pass judgement so quickly.
Okay, here's the deal. One singer or dancer or poet or what have you can enjoy another singer, dancer or poet's work...fair enough But having said that, the listening/viewing public also has a say in what they enjoy seeing and/or hearing.
I do not enjoy this piece. I do not believe that William Shatner does a good job of basically talking (acting??) his way thru this particular song. It's that simple.
@unconventionalmeans Completely understood. Just pointing out that it's easily misinterpreted. William Shatner is certainly no acting titan, but I give him the benefit of the doubt because he takes his craft seriously.
Sure. And for as long as I live, I'll always think of the TV characters Capt. Kirk and Denny Crane whenever I hear the name William Shatner. I really enjoyed William Shatner in both of those rolls.
Not sure about "TJ Hooker", though! LOL! I wasn't much of a TJ Hooker fan.
This is whatever the polar opposite of pure genius is... he has definitely reached the final frontier of his crack pipe. I'm stopping the video at 2:53 I'm too embarrassed for him to continue on.

@unconventionalmeans You don't get it. I didn't at first, but I have a grasp of it now. He is not merely speaking the words, but acting the story told by the song. If you approach it intending to get what you normally get out of a story that is sung, you are bound to be wierded out and/or let down. If you approach it like you would a play or an acting lesson, where body language and pathos recieve prominence over melody, then it makes more sense.
