  • That makes me so happy that you bought a propeller beanie when you were a sophomore in high school. I'm a sophomore right now and I love doing ridiculous things like that to. You clearly have never FTBA'd in your life.

  • the only trophy I have ever gotten was a kumon trophy...kumon is an outside school study program. Math was my extra-curricular activity.

  • "God I love rainbows" could someone pretty please make a gif out of this so i can stare at it everyday, it just makes life better

  • At least you GOT a trophy.

  • "I CLEARLY NEED TO PEE" I just laughed so hard I almost peed.

  • That popular person is a dalek!!!!!!!!!

  • That popular person is a dalek!!!!!!!!!

  • That popular person is a dalek!!!!!!!!!!

  • YES! This was one of the first vlogbrothers videos I ever saw, and I have spent HOURS looking for it, but I finally did! *happy dance*

  • i should go to sleep now. okay.

  • there was a unicorn sticker back there, I wonder what changed johns views on unicorns so much between his childhood and now.

  • I won the best graduating strings of 2007 for primary school.

I was the only graduating strings.

  • I don't know, John. When I was young I played sports constantly when the sun shone, and read constantly when it did not. So, I was a pretty good athlete, and a voracious reader, mostly because I needed to escape an unpleasant childhood, and both those pursuits kept my mind occupied, and focused inwardly. I hardly ever spoke, and it took a long time to break out. But, I think I also qualify for a plot of land in Nerdfighteria, in spite of my athletic endeavors, which in no way made me popular.

  • I know what you mean about being a nerd but not necessarily meeting all of the cliche nerd criteria... But, John, you ARE a nerd! That's why everyone loves you! :D

  • Wow, little John is little Henrey :D

  • Oh my gosh, little John looks like toddler Henry!

  • that is the saddest sport story ever. I'm sorry, but yeah. I just love you.

  • BEST. TROPHY. EVER.

  • THERE'S A UNICORN STICKER!!!

  • That trophy story is the saddest thing I have ever heard. John however looked incredibly please/attractive while telling the heroic tale.

  • "That's the great thing about third grade. If you've got one polysyllabic adjective, everyone thinks you're a genius!" <3

  • Was the grandpa you were talking about visiting in Indiana the one that passed recently? Good memories of him, I'll bet. :)

  • so my friend looked up the definition of nerd and now she completely believes that all nerds just throw their weight around, because they're smart. what are your thoughts on this?

  • 2:19 I used to love that store! What happened to it...?

  • This is one of my favorite VB videos in the history of Nerdfighteria, it saddens me that it doesn't have more views

  • The only trophy I ever won was from science fair. HOO HA NERDFIGHTERS!

  • THERE WAS A UNICORN

  • to prove im a nerd, im a sophomore in high school, and im sitting in my bedroom watching vlogbrothers and have been doing so for the past day

  • I have so many certificates, but NO TROPHIES. (All but one of the certificates are academic, of course. The one was because I was on the 5-player netball team in primary school - only five people went to 5-player netball club. We lost all the matches except the one I wasn't there for.) I guess I'm just not nerdy enough to get to the trophy stages. Oh well, still 4 years of school to go. I WANT A DAMN TROPHY. D;

  • My only trophy is for getting 2nd place in a reginols dance competition. I'm too cool! Wait a second. I haven't watched tv in 3 years excepting....... The new words show. Gaaaaaaaaa!

  • There's a camel on top of that beanie! Magical!

  • 1:51 Was... Was that a... a UNICORN?!?!! lol

I swear, this and the last video made me feel SOOOO sorry for you. Aww, I just wanna, idk... Just awwww! Little Guy!

  • That beanie would be a great "thing to put on [your] head". <3 So adorable!

    Excellent nerd credentials, John.

  • >.< All my trophies are for reading!

  • I got my first trophy in...oh wait....NEVER!!!!

  • My proof that I'm a nerd is that all of my trophies are from speech and debate.

  • John, i'm 16, a sophomore in high school, and i would love to have that hat. lol

  • I admit I had an embarrassing childhood. But uhhhhh, you just totally blew me out of the water.

Seriously though, I was crying with laughter during this, does that make me a bad person?

  • RAINBOWS

  • Again, ADORABLE

  • that hat proves that nerdy is the new cool. seriously, all the 'cool kids' at my high school are wearing them! either that, or john was atcually a cool kid, but ahead of his time :)

  • I... I thought you were ALvin Lorus..

  • I think I've never laughed this much with any other video. John, you just made not only my day but my whole week xD

  • best ever. i'm crying from laughter. i'm sure my mother is, too.

  • That's the cutest thing I've ever heard of!!!

  • ... Anyone else notice a certain unicorn sticker...?

  • WHERES THE PUFF?1

  • This is still one of my favourite John videos. Because it's so honest and sweet and fantastic and I just love you for it, John!

  • Ugh! I should have sent in a drawing of a trophy for the calendar!

  • Wait, I was supposed to win trophies?

  • My parents had a swim trophy made for me, but they pretended that it was a legitimate trophy. Except then next swim practice when everyone got their trophies and they looked nothing like mine...it was awkward.

  • God I love rainbows

    BRILLIANT!

  • Aw... I loved t-ball...

  • I can't stop laughing at the creepy furby sticker.

  • @kmarygxc Furbies were the best things I've ever known.

  • @kmarygxc that "creepy furby sticker" that you referred to actually isn't a furby at all it is a gremlin. And not just any gremlin either, it is Gizmo. The sticker, more than likely, came with a set of Gremlins trading cards created by the trading card company Topps as a promotion for the movie in 1984. I was a child of the early 90's and Gremlins was one of my favorite movies, but he it does resemble a furby but the true inspiration for the furby design was most likely an owl of some variety.

  • Man, T-ball was so difficult! I always hit the stick or the air.

  • I had all sorts of trophies when I was little: baseball, dancing, horsebackriding... Sure, I bought them all at a tag sale. Wait, what?

  • God I love rainbows.

  • I was on a T-ball team when I was like 4 years older than everyone else too! haha How sad is that? lol

  • The only trophy I ever won was in the 7th grade, for Science Academic Team. If that's not nerdy... I don't know what is.

  • Stickers for military insignia. That is so jokes.

  • "You and your minions" made me lose my shit laughing lmao

  • I really like that the rainbow sticker looks like the cloud is puking rainbow.

  • @iwannasammich777 I gave your comment a thumbs up because it reminds me of my profile picture :3. That is all.

  • The Gremlins!!!

That is my all time favorite move.

Im am jealous of your stickers.

    <3

  • and now you win awards for your books...much better accomplishment^^

  • JOHN! I have that freaking hat! *_* Isn't it just completely made of awesome?! You have no idea how happy I am that you have that hat.. :D

  • I love the Gizmo sticker. I almost screamed, "GREMLINS!" when I saw it.

  • The nerds are cool :D

  • 1:51 OMG A UNICORN STICKER!!!! YOU LOVE UNICORNS REALLY!

  • Was that part about the tee ball in looking for Alaska?

  • All-Star trophy

    That.is.too.cute!

  • I wish I could find a Sophomore in high school who would buy that hat themselves. Sighhhhh....

  • @FemmeUrbane For real! This has to negate his nerd cred at least a little.

  • 1984 eh? That's the year I was born!

  • This was uploaded on my fourteenth birthday! And it made me laugh so hard that I'm proud it was.

  • The T-Ball thing is from Looking for Alaska, in which Miles "Pudge" Halter is talking about how he was in t-ball, and older than everyone else but he lost the all star spot to a one armed kid

  • I saw a UNICORN!!!

  • nerds win trophies as adults, that's where their investment of time lies. how many book awards have you won? at least 3!

  • what is the video when hank talks about his high school experience?

  • people the T-ball thing was in Will Grayson, Will Grayson. straight Will was thinking about it after he and Tiny had a fight and he was sitting in the dugout. How they both sucked (but him more than Tiny) and how Tiny beat up either the coach or one of the other kids because he was being mean to Will.

  • John is all talking slow and it's throwing me off.

  • THIS IS SO WONDERFUL. I feel so unqualified.

  • I have a little trophy from when I came second in an Easter-egg-painting contest ... :/

  • I won

  • Whilst John still loves rainbows, his taste in stickers has changed; note the unicorn!

  • He keeps saying stuff in this video that I SWEAR I've heard somewhere else--and not just the first time I saw the video. Like somebody sampled it in a song or something; the totally quotable stuff like, "God I love rainbows."

(Roundabout way of saying: "Duuuude...deja vu" ^)

  • I recognized the story about T-Ball. I spent about 15 minutes trying to work out where and when you've told us about it before...

Then I realized... LOOKING FOR ALASKA! :D

    Amazing book by the way.

  • In his sticker album there is a UNICORN!!

    1:55

  • I believe the only trophies I got when I was younger was for reading ALOT and taking tests for those books and passing...Which, I don't think is much of a big deal anymore...Oh well.

  • That is the cutest thing I've ever heard. Child rearing. Mama and Papa Green did it right.

  • I might be remembering this wrong, but wasn't the T-Ball player who was older than the rest and beaten by a four year old for the All Star team used in one of your books? It just sounds vaguely familiar and it appears to be the most valid option.

  • I was just about to look about my house to remind myself of what trophies I won. And then I realized for the first time...I had no trophies.

Seriously, I always thought I had one, but I actually don't. xD I did almost get one in a 'spelling bee contest' at school when I was 8 because I answered all correctly, even the ones that the fifteen year olds were asked to spell, but they gave the trophy to the oldest one in my team, even though he barely got anything right.

  • THERE IS A UNICORN IN THAT STICKER ALBUM.

  • god I love rainbows.

  • which book was the t-ball thing in. this is going to make me so angry. im gonna say looking for alaska but im not sure

  • The only trophy I have ever won was for writing an essay on being Kind to people.

  • The only trophy I ever won was for policy debate... As a freshman in highschool. I think I take the cake on this one.

  • Well, I can't quite boast of having -no- trophies (I'm a freshman in high school), but every single one of the 8 trophies I've won is from spelling bees.

    (hoo-hah, NERDFIGHTERS.)

  • god i love rainbows.

  • I have about 12 trophies in my room. All of which are for bowling.

  • @KINDspotting WIN!

  • @MeLaneyDay :D

  • "Thomas Edison, you know he's famous for inventing the boombox." :D

  • OH MY... that beanie has a camel on it!!!

  • aren't hank and green parents like the best parents ever?

  • @nina151088 Hank and Green parents? O_o

  • In the first grade I won a bingo tournament and my teacher gave me a ceramic dog. I named it Bob, and I still have it :]

  • In 3rd grade I won a spelling bee and my teacher, Mrs. brown gave me a ceramic cat instead of a trophy. Weird.

  • You're an All-Star in our hearts too, John. *big eyes*

  • I watched this video before I read Looking For Alaska. Then when I read Looking for Alaska the T-Ball story sounded so familiar. Then I watched this again. My brain no longer hurts.

  • Comment removed

  • Um, my only awards are for being good at math...oh, and sometime in about 4th grade I won a medal made out of a edge-smoothed soup can lid with a sticker on it for winning a scavenger hunt.

I once joiced the school's basketball team, and I hurt my finger...while on the bench. The ball was flying towards my face and I blocked it...with my finger.

  • oh so that's where the t-ball thing in Looking for Alaska comes from.

  • .48 ".......i though that cool was wearing mismatched plaid pants hiked up to your solar plexus........" LOL

  • I have never won a trophy in my life but I had a lot of academic medals and plats. My sister was envious but she had trophies and medals in track, power lifting, and vollyball. I wounder who is the nerd in our family.

  • Your parents are so cool! Lol! My mum persuaded me that it would be a good idea to do a rap in the year 5 Talent show auditions. Being that I'm a girl, a nerd and wrote the rap about school, that was the most embarrassing day of my life. I vowed never to listen to my parents again. But your parents sound soooo cool!

  • Oh John xD That's so sad, yet adorable.

  • That tee-ball story is very familiar... isn't that the same story you wrote about in Looking for Alaska" from the character of miles... hmmm, does this book have some autobiographical themes to it?? pretty awesome!

  • "i was such a nerd, i thought nerds were cool" LOL

  • Made of WIN!

  • One of my favorite things I've ever heard on Youtube: "John Green, All-Star... In Our Hearts"

  • The intro is one of my favorite songs :3

  • Is it just me or is his life resemble that in Looking for Alaska... O.o

  • @CatsandCellos Very much so. In fact, the school in Looking for Alaska is directly based on his high school, and he enrolled there in circumstances similar to Pudge. It's also rumored that the plot is based on events that occurred there during his time on campus...

  • Wow. Your tee-ball anecdote just made about five of my days. It was so sweet of your parents to do that for you. Keep being so awesome, John Green!

  • I want that beanie so bad.

  • I protest the use of the word "popular" in this video. Popular denotes something that many people like. most "cool kids" are not also popular. However, I argue that John Green is something many people (nerdfighters) like. therefore John green is popular. Not the kid with mismatched plaid pants.

  • OH MY GOD. i bought a beanie hat recently and I'M A SOPHOMORE IN HIGH SCHOOL.

    yaaay!

  • I WANT TO BE ONE OF HANKS MINIONS

  • I HAVE THE SAME STICKER ALBUM! My aunt gave it to me to add to it. Nerdfighters for generations!

  • The only trophy I have is a chess trophy. NERDNERDNERDNERDNERD.

  • i miss brotherhood 2.0 videos. they were made of such wonderful awesome!

  • i'm not even joking. when you and i were eight (at different times obviously) we drew EXACTLY the same way

  • 1:56 You love rainbows? What does this mean? With all those rainbows... it's actually, oddly enough, starting to look like, I know I know, a TRIPLE rainbow. I know, right?

  • Polysyllabic is such a made of awesome adjective that I can think of no adjective to properly match it's awesome except for 'made of awesome'. Good job proving in the same sentence that you were a nerd then for your repeated use of 'interesting' and that you have progressed since then to become even more of a nerd now because of your use of 'polysyllabic'.

  • I can't say the same about the trophies; I am part of a rare breed of nerdfighters who actually have some physical capabilities.

  • lol 2:30 and on i just watched with a huge grin on my face, unable to EVEN LAUGHT......the story was so....funny?

  • LOL

This video made my day. I don't remember the last time I laughed so hard. :P

  • I had to live in the same room as my sister (of sorts. It's a complicated relationship :D) for about 6 months while mine got all messed up by builders and she had a whole table of trophies. I actually considered stealing one. (I actually did, but we have different names. Stupid parents...) :D

  • question: is there a camel on top of the beanie? i think there is. wow

  • My childhood trophies were for athletics which doesn't seem nerdy until I mention they were a) for walkathons and gymnastics (remember early 90's leotards?) and b)everyone who participated got them. Obviously, John, you participated in the wrong sport as a child.

  • Oh man, I thought nothing could trump the book in the last video. I was wrong. So. Much. Nerdiness! I love it. :P

  • god i love rainbows

  • i like rainbows too :)

  • ......you spelled communication wrong

  • @hellloemily It's actually on purpose, even though lots of people comment on it.

The general idea is that there's no 'I' in communication. Basically, it's not so much about the person MAKING the video, more about the people watching them.

    But good pick up :D

  • i have like two academic trophies, a crap load of academic certificates, and a fricken awesome medal!!!....from a chemistry competition. ^_^

  • did you use that story in will grayson will grayson?

  • so... you love rainbows.. but you despise unicorns?

  • My nerd credentials: I have several trophies, nearly all of which are for my excellence at chess, mathematics, and the piano. Nerdfighters. Chk-Chk. Pow!

  • All of my trophies are academic related. I got them for like reading and math and computers.

  • I have never gotten a trophy. There is an entire box of certificates in my garage, but never a trophy. :,(

  • the only non-achademically based award I have received in high school is a horse-ass trophy from the Drama club for, I kid you not, "Nerd Of The Year." It's by far one of the coolest things I own.

  • hahaha, i would soooo buy that hat if i could just find one! i'm also looking for footie-pajamas :)

  • In the sticker album I did see a unicorn sticker! +gasp+ : O

  • OMG there's a unicorn on that rainbow page!!!!!!!!!

  • Having grown up in the Oprah era of childraising (You get a trophy! You get a trophy! Everybody gets a trophy!), I have three trophies: one for playing little league baseball (I was stupid enough to try it without the tee), one for getting a hole-in-one on a plinko-style minigolf hole, and another for winning my class's spelling bee in second grade (when I really shouldn't have).

  • Probably my favorite vlogbrothers video ever!

  • In Pokemon there is a episode where Ash receives a trophy from his mom and on the trophy it read, "Ash Ketchum: First Place in our Hearts."

  • is it just me or at 1:54 do the clouds look like they are puking rainbows?

  • "On the left you see me, for some reason I'm kinda a quasi abstract painting" lol that kills me

  • "God I love rainbows," in a monosyllabic voice.

  • God, I love going back to watch these old videos

John, you look so _young_ !

    =]]

  • Cool IS wearing mis-matched plaid pants hiked up to your solar plexus.

  • well at least he has the poe bust now.

  • I love opening the box o' memories!

  • "God I love rainbows."

    I lost it.

  • I have that same exact sticker album! How weird and cool is that. lol (Thus proving I am also a nerd because I still love that sticker book and that I am excited you have the same one).

  • Unicorn Stickers FTL

  • Ha Ha Ha LOL at 1:52 you can see a unicorn sticker. He did like unicorns once.

  • I've won trophies/medals/ribbons.......in MathCounts, KCATM (another math competition), and Science Olympiad. pwn.

  • @LunaLupinTonks

    Whoa so awesome

  • YOU ARE PUDGE! With the t-ball thing! HA! That's too funny for words.

  • little john has wings!
