@VonTavast hes been taught how to build and start a fire, really amazing that an ape can grasp that concept, their abilities are clearly far beyond what is necessary for survival in their natural enviornment
@UniteForgetLeftRight Yes, he's been taught. I don't expect you could learn a chimpanzee to like music though. And if you did, how would you know it really likes the music and doesn't just dance because it was taught to do so? Yes the chimpanzee is a smart creature, but an intelligent creature doesn't have to like music, that's just something we humans have picked up during our dancing around the campfire thanking the gods or whatever we did. You can still see it going on in Africa even today.
@VonTavast well we all know they can be taught choreography, but im not talking about dance just them enjoying the sounds, apes males often rely on who can make the loudest noise to establish dominance and mating rights, if you take it a few steps further it could be who's "serenade" sounds the best. im not saying apes could write songs just that they could appreciate them.
@UniteForgetLeftRight Ah yes I think I understand your theory there but it is a little bit far-fetched don't you think? If they actually could like some sort of music, it would have to be totally different from what we consider music, since what you're basing on there is shouting, so they would have to be interested in shouting of some sort. I don't know, this argument is rather stupid to be having anyway haha.
@VonTavast well i wasn't thinking about vocalizations but of course they do that, they also break sticks and bash things around to make noise, i remember reading about a chimp that found some empty gas cans and learned he could be really loud slamming them around, your right though its a pretty petty disagreement
@UniteForgetLeftRight I'm not sure about music but Koko, the gorilla who does sign language, likes movies, particularly romance movies, they say. She also wears sweaters when it's cold and though I don't know if she would put it on by choice, she does have a preference for which sweater she wears. So, they are capable of having likes and favourites, so far as I can tell.
@LadyGrinningSoul I would think Koko likes the sweater. Gorillas get cold easily so she probably realizes the sweater helps & in the Koko doc she helps put it on so my guess is she would choose it on a cold day but I am not positive on that. She clearly doesn't object to it. lol I think it's cruel but my mothers dog wears a sweater & even comes running to put it on. I think lots of animals are smarter than they are generally given credit for. Maybe some understand & like the clothing.
@shananagans5 Yeah, it's really impressive! I didn't like the idea of it at first but she did seem to be very happy to put it on so, as long as she's happy, then I guess it is ok. The sad thing is, even though we are starting to understand that these, and many other creatures, have equal emotions to our own, humans remain to kill and ruin their lives. It makes me so sad to think that soon there might not be any more of these incredible non-human persons.
I wonder what would happen if they asked him something like: 'Kanzi, give Sue apples' when there is only a picture with bananas left. Would he give the remaining picture with bananas on it anyways, or would he be confused?
He certainly is a smart animal, but for now I'm not yet convinced he actually 'knows' the words... I mean: if i ask my dog to get his ball, he does that too, but does that man he can communicate?
@tranz325 He's a bonobo. Travis was a chimpanzee. Chimpanzees are prone to violence and tearing enemies and even each other apart in the wild too. Bonobos are peaceful. They solve their problems with *consensual* sex (so no, not raping) and/or other acts of affection.
I wonder whether Bowlby's theory of attachment is a quality found in apes? I know you shouldn't generalise your theory's made from the human species to the ape species, however it is quite extraordinary that an ape forms a strong bond with their mothers from birth up and how only at the age of two they begin to travel to a distance of only 5 meters away from their mothers. Interesting...
OMG I just love him! It just goes to show that it doesnt matter what specie someone is, they still have the same rights and the same capacity to love and experience just like us. We humans should learn alot from Bonobos and their wonderful culture
Do they drug this male ape so that he doesn't get overly aggressive or exciteable, or try to mate with everything in sight? Do they give him antidepressants or tranquilizers?
@brianwesleyan You can tell afterward the other scientist gets pissed off at her for getting the ape so excited, considering the destructive power he could have, even in a good mood.
Everyone's always saying that bonobos aren't chimpanzees. That's not true; they're technically just a species of chimp (chimpanzees are a genus with two species, the common chimp and the bonobo). Besides that this was a great video though, and immensely fascinating. Thanks for sharing!
@jimbob1168 I think the average primate of his size is about 4 times stronger than the average human male. "Toddler" chimps are about the same strength as the average man. Crazy
wow. apes are people.i wish they had made this more entertaining to watch. the music and drab voice suck but kanzi the bonobo really is a genius. doubters of evloution and people who think we are so superior to animals could learn a lot from watching this. seriously, should apes have human rights? what if bonobos were taught language on a larger scale? i want to see him smoke a joint. hahaha
Growing up in the 1960's and 70's I learned, that humans were animals superior in many ways. Humans were special, because of self awareness. I wish my biology teacher could see this...
This movie might be a little biased, in it's choice of music, etc., but boy is it amazingly astonishing to watch Kanzi (or Koko or...). Research and interest about this subject seems rare. Considering the possible impact on the God vs Darwin war, it doesn't really surprise me.
it can make fire???? whats next? bombs? lol hope they dont follow humans

Can't these animals be unpredictably dangerous? As well as several times stronger than a human?
I'm not sure I'd want to interacting as casually with this chimp as does the woman as this video...

@Malcolm64 Binobos are less violent than Chimps. Very few people who work with chimps have all their fingers.
Try 'In the Shadow of Man' by Jane Goodall.
