I notice that you move your entire arm back when lifting the thumb to play?
It may be because I've played a Flute for years, but.. I can simply move my thumb backwards or to the side to uncover the hole...
also, the ocarina's design has been fixed for the chrome and triforce.. Maybe STL did not have the rights to sell anything with the Triforce on it, as it would, logically, belong to nintendo?
I just got one of these. It looks like STL put an actual triforce on there including a silver band around the mouth piece bit. The subhole issue you mentioned is fixed and the airy-ness issue isn't really an issue. The higher notes generally require more air in order to completely hit them.
On the high notes tilt your head down, and pull the ocarina into chest per say maybe 10-15 centimeters from your chest and that should make the higher notes sound better.
just watched your video. at least i fill a bit more comfratable about my purchuse i just ordered the same ocarina yesturday i am new to the ocarina playing so i would really love, n look forward to if you could make a video explaining the whole number scale thing for me ? =) thanks
can u show me a little bit of how to play? i got the same ocarina and i do not know how to use the book and i stil am unsure of what the sub holes do if i put my finger over em it does nothin.
you know what stinks my first ocarina wich was a pendat i droped it and it broke damn but i learned songs by ear on it but now i have one songbird ocarina im getting the oot replica soon yay...
I got this same ocarina for Christmas, but the higher notes do not sound airy at all. They sound fairly close to the way my Double Ocarina does, and I PROMISE that is not airy. Did you hear of any changes they made to the ocarina? (The subhole issue is still there)
I haven't heard of any changes made to the design. I think I mentioned this before but i think I am a harsh critic of ocarinas because I have 3 hinds and they are just superior instruments, but that one isn't atrocious, especially when you learn to feel it out.
As for the subhole issue, that can worked around with alternate fingerings, I am going to post a video for that in case people are interested.
@movi3mak3r2000 Wow you responded to a comment from 2 years ago! haha I'm guessing the zelda-ing up thing was about you mentioning painting it? Who the heck knows what I was thinking now. ><
Excellent review. And I share your opinion of this one. It's a shame the high notes are so airy, I made almost no research before I bought it and was sort of disappointed when I played it the first time. It's okay for beginners, but right now I'd rather want something else.
Also, it's a bit too loud, and I find it sort of embarrassing to play the thing for hours when everyone's at home. But that's another issue entirely... :P
Looking at a Hind ocarina, those are very impressive, tho expensive.
well like i said in the review, it depdnds what you're intnetion is, if you're a beginner or just want to play for zelda songs, then I have no isses with this ocarina in the least bit, it's a good little instrument.
/the reason that stl didint put the triforce onit is because its nintendo copy right they would have to pay them if they did.I talked to them on the phone about it but they said it doesnt matter if you paint it or any thing win you get it.But still for a minute there I thought it was a darryn song bird zelda rep XD your a good artist
You were completely right man! I have this ocarina and I hate that little subhole, anyways, it's still a good ocarina, it has a very good sound. I think STLocarinas are very good, the best stl ocarina that you can have is the "enigma".. That's my opinion.
Of course I agree, but yeah this little one has a charm to it. I recognize the feel of the sound and playing it and generally I like it. Also it gives (with the songbird) a zelda clay 12 hole of both types of wind pattern.
Funny you should mention the enigma, I've been thinking about that one. Of course Focalink and that new infinity as well, people want tme to review them among other things, haha
XD I loved the whole 'It wasn't Zelda-worthy' moment you had there. How dare they just put a yellow triangle on it and call it a triforce! My friends would probably hunt down their base and rip their heads off or something drastic like that. Or at least say they would.
Another good review, and now I'm really glad I decided against the STL. I'm not going to buy an instrument that has tuning problems I can't fix. ((I'm not used to having an instrument with fixed tuning...can't wait to get mine!))
Yeah... I learned that the hard way regarding the case that came with my regular black STL Tenor.... I've got a new double now from STL and I bought a triangular gun case like Docjazz suggested on his other channel and it's worked really well to protect it so far.
Good review. I think you said everything pretty well and explained the good and bad points of the average STL ocarina. Shame people will see Docjazz's and think all STLs are perfect.
Well, a couple of aspects there....the first is a microphone will always have a hard time properly capturing a musical instrument, especially one like an airy ocarina, that tone has a complexity....the second is that videos can be edited, or an instrument can be played in a room with alot of echo which can hide airyness.
Personally I am so anti editing a video illusion people that I don't even touch my videos for anything, if I skrew up a song in it, I apologize and move on, haha
Also, a talented player can make an instrument sound better, and I don't doubt STL's folks are talented. As I said in the review, it can be improved with technique
Saria gives you teh ocarina with a triangle

you are better off using a different system. the number system is just not very good. sheet music, tabs, or playing by ear, are all superior.

seymer82 2 years ago
you need to cut your breath by a lot to make most subholes work.
however, in general, STL ocarinas have poor subholes and do not work as well as they should.
Some do have good subholes. This particular model does not.
