I tend to agree with you. But as I said it's not the 1st time I've encountered the “possibility” of such. During the Sydney G20 summit a comment was made concerning individuals with big sticks (SCA) wandering through the streets being monitored by security forces. I was involved with the SCA during the late eighties/early nineties & respect the fact they strive for authentic period (15th century). SCA friends I made back then I still keep contact with today as the majority are decent people.
@ThomasEddySon Still, there's a large difference between security forces and the regular army. There are very strict laws about using the military for domestic affairs; you'd need a full scale armed revolt before they'd go beyond calling out the National Guard. I wouldn't be surprised if there were U.S. Marshals watching us. I'd be shocked if the military was doing anything more than exercises.
@RenegadePaladin speaking as some-one who lives in a city that has hosted the G20 (Sydney) I can tell you that the SCA was a group that concerned some organizers according to a paramedic who was on duty during the event - as I said (again) "possible" but one does need to take into consideration the size and activities of the group especially at Pennsic every year - the phrase "immense gathering of armed and armored individuals” comes to mind and usually enough to blow the wind up any politician.
Possibly just another example of military paranoia - not the 1st time I've encountered this in relation to the SCA. Do they (the military) realize that the group operates as a non-profit entity and is regulated by the same federal laws that govern all special interest groups and clubs? It’s as though they think that SCA gatherings are unregulated and without any form of judicial watchdog. The SCA corporate is very strict in adhering to various laws in a multitude of countries worldwide.
@ThomasEddySon I really doubt it. It's a large group of people engaging in mock battles; it makes an ideal exercise ground for aerial spotting and target drills without having to have a large mock ground engagement on their own (which is expensive) to practice on. If the government was paranoid about the SCA, they'd be watching us with police and marshals, not the U.S. Army.
@RenegadePaladin I tend to agree with you. But as I said it's not the 1st time I've encountered “possibility” of such. I was involved with the SCA during the late eighties/early nineties and respect the fact they strive for authentic period experience without any reminder of the modern world. The SCA friends I made back then I still keep contact with today as the majority are decent people and do have young ones (Some I even watched go from toddler to adult over a period of twenty years).
It was scary. They seemed to be aiming at the B block last year. We had kids in the camp who were badly frightened. It was worse than a Buzz kill. I still have nightmares.
Yeah sometimes. They were so close and hanging over us. It really looked as if they were aiming their guns at us. I also live right by a marine base, Miramar MAB and less than 1/2 mile from the site of the crash almost two years ago. It's really both those and the constant sound of helicopters over my house.
The first minute or two of this was pretty cool, it quickly lost that as they KEPT hanging out doing acrobatics.. Kind of hard to pretend it's 1450 when you're being strafed by military 'copters. I told myself they were scadians who couldn't get leave to come to war so it was their way of "touching" it, but... was still bloody annoying after a very short time.
I particularly like the C130 and C141 runs over the swamp... usually two or three times every war. Nothing like lazing around camp and suddenly having the roar of two or three cargo planes at low altitude shooting over the trees.
The military uses Pennsic for strategic training as it is not on maps and they are sent out to find a tent (refuge) city. Night runs are practice night drops. It trains our military and I am sure they have great fun doing it. While it is a buzz kill to the event, so is I79 with its tractor trailers laying on their horns or jake brakes all hours...
I was in my merchant booth and telling people that the East Kingdom had hired dragons as support in the woods battle!!! see ya all next year.
They were mildly distracting while fighting in the early stages of the Woods battle. A Lady in our camp was in our open topped shower stall while one of the helicopters hovered near by. She eventually flipped him the bird figuring that he was checking her out. I doubt that is what he was doing but it was funny.

They were just going over the woods when we fired the cannons. I'd have loved to hear the commo chatter, when we showed up on their threat sensors...

Little did they know that their CO was attending Pennsic at the time.

i think i know who your talking about! Yeah, flyovers during pennsic can be rude.
anakinseviltwin 2 years ago
Which block would that have been in? We were in one of the W blocks. I actually like the flyovers. The only place I get to see them.
