  • Songs from the Big Chair, I still have the cassette, great memories thanks for uploading.

  • I love this one and Gary Jules'. It does amaze me how many people tell me that this is just a "shitty cover of that gary jules song" and don't believe me when I say that it's the original.

  • cheers for that one!!!!!

  • fantastic! they're so young... and incredible. what a brilliant song.

    thanks for posting it!

  • Oh , those eyelashes.

  • i cant decide if i like the piano version or this.......they r both very good

  • Roland the only good thing to come out of Leighpark

  • donnie darko version is better

  • awesome

  • great song

  • SUSAN BOYLE!!

  • haha wow this is so upbeat

  • this live version is aaamazing, its bit faster than on the Lp, and its stripped down a bit, incredible.

  • There is only one band who does this song in our view ...and they just performed it in the above video from 1982.

  • <3

  • love it! just like the old times. were old dude!

  • holy shit his microphone is smaller then the shit we use now

  • Am starting to dislike the Gary Jules one more and more.

It's beautiful, really, it's a work of art.

.....but it just isn't this song. I hear a song called 'mad world' on tv all the time... but never this song. :P

  • i love the lyrics 2 this song. they wrote this 4 me & this song is a classic. thank u roland & kurt & thanks vnintco. kudos

  • 2:19 Cool as CoCo?

  • 2:19 Cool as CoCo?

  • Thumbs up.

  • I love this song :) The original (this one) is a bit more..up beat than Gary Jules..completely different so I like them both :)

  • How I love those pen-like microphones they had back then...

  • kinda sounds like a popier joy division

  • And i find it kind of funny

I find it kind of sad

    ...

    When people run in circles

    It's a very, very

    Mad world

  • I'm a child of the 90s and I love this one. Synthesizers FTW.

  • How many more people are going to say this is a cover? Seriously, I hope you're all not too lazy to at least Wiki the song. It was written by Roland Orzabal for Tears for Fears and performed by Curt Smith from Tears for Fears. Notice Gary Jules' name is no where in the credits for the song. Also, the song came out almost a full decade before Donnie Darko came out or Gary Jules sang the song.

  • I don't know the Gary Jules version may be is too sad but more appropriate to the meaning of the text.

  • this one is still the best

  • this is my fave version

  • I've always been a person who didn't belong. I was born in '89 and have loved 80's music my whole life, especially one's that use the sinthesizer so well. Tears for Fears is one of my favorite bands, and not being alive when the music I love was made, I don't get to see classic videos very often. So to the one who posted this video, I just want to thank you. As cheesy as this sounds, you help keep the 80's alive for people like me.

  • this song is awesome

  • love this song

  • so talented Not only do they sing it well They were gifted enough to write it

  • This original version by Tears for Fears is far more better than the crap cover version by Gary Jules...Does anyone else agree with me about this?

  • TFF were ahead of there time!

All there songs are AMAZING, i was a Child of the 80's growing up, I'm nearly 31 soon

    :(

Sowing The Seeds is one of my all time favourites! ;)

  • SSSSSSUUUUUUUUPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRBBBBBBBB NUF SAID

  • man this is amazing

  • This broad was BORN in '82!!!! SO PROUD to be a child of the 80's!!!! And homie is a silver fox and still so damned sexy!!!! Talkin' bout our leading man...

  • bloody hell this is so different. (i heard covers first) you know you have written a brilliant song when it can be covered by different people, in different styles and still sound fantastic.

  • for some reason i think this is the best version, i dont know why

  • true

  • because its the original

  • @alecrhodes I think that the old ppl shuffled to some depressing shit. But i still like its beat. Its 80s...

  • I love thissss!

  • I Hope the next time Tears for Fears perform Mad World, they'll perform it the original way, which in my opinion, the best take of Tears for Fears (although I love that of Adam Lambert's as well). Go TFF!!!

  • Agreed like the original is more emotional and has most of the meaning to it but im saying this is good to but the original has more expresion

  • I love you Curtttttt!!!!

  • I like the background music on this one :P

  • The Roland Jupiter 8.

    What a machine.

  • Great advert for the Roland Jupiter 8.

  • his voice is so soul...5 out of 5

  • The perfect mix of anger with depression!

  • EPIC

  • Classic 80's stuff. Though it's amazing how some songs then sounds better without the synthesizers :)

  • great voice

  • I totally just LMAO'd.

I checked this out to see what the original sounded like, after hearing the Adam Lambert version.

    Adam. Don't worry. You win.

  • this version is rlly good but i still think gary jules's is better

  • You MUST be a child of the 90s LOL Gary Jules version is just more depressing, really. I like TFFs, but maybe thats because I am 40 and a child of the 80s. ;)

  • I am a child of 80, not 90.

  • ok i totally love the song but...

they make such an emo song sound so happy....

if u get what i mean

  • Amazing song!

  • Woot, good luck singing into that toothbrush!

  • TIMELESS

  • an archie young world

  • i saw people with buckets on their heads

  • This is a fantastic song! TFF rocked . I remember this so well. So adorable.

I love this original version AND I love the Jules version. Beautiful, thanks for posting.

  • I wish I could be transported back to the 80s!

  • it must be a blow to alot of the gary jules fans thinking he wrote this song when uve got the original artists here performing mad world nearly 20 yrs before gary jules cover

  • children waiting for the day they feel good.

    happy bday

    Lc

  • his voice sounds so...holy ... great song 5/5 rock on TFT

  • Best use of claves in a pop song!

  • My heart belongs with the synthesizers from the 80's.

  • so 80's!

  • It's easy to copy but to create is the difficult part.

There's no doubt that cover versions are sometimes good (like Jules's) but where's the talent in cashing in on someone else's work.

Where's his follow up to this hit?

  • luv this soooo much ;)

  • I do like this version more, but the lyrics and the way the words are placed make every version on this song great ^^.

  • OMG what's UP with the braids!?! sounds great though... this song is so amazing, no matter what version of it.

  • omg i just so wish i was there!!

  • love this song its just so...wow..

tears for fears are the best thing ever.

  • What's with the coloured commentary at the end?

"Wow Tears For Fears! Good song but they look about as cool as coco. That was Mad World."

  • this is a good version (of course Original) but I like the Gary Jules version because it's slower and it just seems more suited to the dark, solom, creepy sort of lyrics. This is a little to up beat for the opposite words. only my thoughts

  • I like this version of Mad World better than the Gary Jules version. For some reason Garry Jules just depresses the shit out of me and I don't like the feeling of being depressed.

  • i like this version more

but they're both still really good

tears for fears are just an all around

amazing band <33 fixed in with such

    great vocalists and musicians <3

  • Lol is this the Orginal? :S

  • roland kinda looks a little goth to me

  • Comment removed

  • Gary Jules's version is actually better, sorry to say.

  • i believe this is the best version i love this song and am a fan of this band...im 16 but still luv this music...sorta a classic that will always been good and i so agree w/ nomadicme...it does have a mysterious feel to it...maybe y i luv it so much...awsome video and clear sound...luv it amazing rly? is it such an issue if it is Lip-synced,...as long as its the same person dont worry about it..its still their music and still good though i agree u should spell it right if u wish to insult

  • they were just amazing totally mind blowing reminds me of primary school awesome curt and roland true genuis of music brilliant

  • I played this song for one of my friends and he said to me 'is this a cover of the one in donnie darko' i almost screamed. Shame about the lip-synching

  • he sang this in 1982 and made the newer mad world in 2001 and he sang both of them anyway 5/5

  • superb song

  • God, I hate Top of the Pops... always lip singing.

  • Lip-syncing**

If you're going to insult something, at least spell it correctly.

  • what really pisses me off is that some people think that gary jules is the original singer of "mad world" dont get me wrong i like gary jules version but nothing is better then the original.

  • omg, this sounds so good. It had this kind of mysterious feel to it. amazing.

  • THE best tears for fears song in my opinion-brilliant.

  • the main singer is hot as

  • Kurt Smith, and the other guy is Roland Orzabull

  • the mane singer is hot as

  • OMG, so weird :D Kinda strange microphone-holding technique from the singer though :D

  • atay 1:07 it says something "film donnie darko"

  • he kind of look like the singer 4 breaking benjamin

  • Freshly Bottled Wine.

  • manny probably wasnt asked as kurt and roland are wankers...

  • I gotta say, I really wanted to see the dance...

  • The album was release in 1983....this is 1982 O.o

  • Thank you for the video, keep them coming if you can!

  • thanks for posting..

  • SPECIAL THANX !!!

  • true dat... very rare...

  • Yeah, he even goes out of tune slightly at the end exactly like how he does on the recording. These TV shows were silly for not letting the artists play for real.

  • rolands sexay

  • This is beyond rare! Thanks a million for posting this!

  • This is gold O_O It`s weird, they look so young...god :O BTW,one of the best live performances I`ve ever seen.

  • Thanks for your comments, I will try to put more rare TFF in this site.

  • This is one of the best live performances you've ever seen because it wasn't live. They were miming because they were on Top of Pops. Check out the video of the Pogues trying to lip-synch on this show. Hilarious. But honestly, that is one of the sickest mullets I have ever seen. Seriously, it's so stringy!

  • The pogues play on this show?

  • everyone played on this show, top of the pops was the uk singles top 40 chart. 30 minutes every week 1965 until 2005.

  • I was 11 or 12 when this came out, remember it well, well never really paid any attention to the words but now im 40 and the lyrics make a whole lot of sense, makes me think of my own kids being sent out to school and join the rat race, instant depression ,state of the world and we just go along with it,reminds of pink Floyds another brick in the wall ,all sad but true ,anyway im not away to jump off anything high or start eatin boxes of tablets lol,it is a mad world lol

  • love this thanks for posting we need more tff rare stuff

  • That is Manny Elias on drums. One of the most underrated drummers of all time! His most famous groove with Tears For Fears?-"Everybody Wants To Rule The World" That is a classic half-time shuffle groove.

  • Yes, Manny was the best TFF drummer. I wonder why Roland and Curt didn't approach him for playing drums on their latest album.

  • I totally agree.
