Well the Primal Darkness is somewhat similar only you have to keep dishing out damage to avoid it but eventually, if your not able to stop then it will kill you off.
Persona 3 spells damage a lot while in Persona 4 the Physical damage deals more damage. You can say the maker of Persona 4 focus more on physical than magic.
I ultimately believe being able to control your allies allowed for a fuller utilization of Physical skills... and considering how they might critical even after being power boosted, makes for impressive damage. And not too many foes resist physical attacks as well.
In P3... you could easily boost an ally's spells that they'd most likely cast, and with a greater amount of weakness (and the fact there's 3 physical types). And there's the matter of Almighty being stronger in P3 than P4.

wow.... yeah.... though if you fart around until the 50th or 100th turn she will cast a 9999 damage spell, so it's best not to drag it out.
