@Scoshed the other way round... the latests Airbusses don't allow the pilot to directly control the plane, the computer has to approve the joysticks movements first.
@Scoshed You've already had other pople correct you on this, I hope by this point you realize you have it backwards. Just read the analysis of Air France flight 447 from Brazil to France. IT explains how the computer doesn't allow the pilot to make certain direct inputs (plus a lot of other frightening information about the training program apparent to Air France).
787 don't use joystick as I can see. Actually it's a nice feature in Airbus, a full functional joystick (and rudder), all in one. I mean, like when we play Flight Simulator :)))
@platterhof The problem with joysticks is that one pilot can't tell what the other pilot is doing. There has been some argument that such visual feedback of the state of control inputs might have helped in the Air France tragedy.
Wow, so exciting, a plane with one engine on each wing, that seats 250 passengers and flies at mach 0.85. We've never seen that before. But the most exciting part is the 15% increased fuel efficiency. When have we ever seen a plane that was more fuel efficient than the generation that came before? Air travel will never be the same.
@StateOfTheArts Despite Boeings headstart, they're still flying the fat and uncomfortable 737 with their yokes dating from before the war. In fact, when boeing designed the NG, they were persuaded by some american buyers to not change it too much to reduce the cost of retraining. Thus, not really much evolution. Take a look at the A320-30-40-family. A fresh design with sweet technology.
@spiff1003 I definately prefer the yoke over the silly little sidestick found in Airbuses. And airbuses rely way too much on electronics... Cheers now
@Int3rvent1on yes that is so true. there was a crash of an A340 during the Paris Air show where computer locked up the control and didn't let pilot override it That is what so sucks about all Airbus planes.
i realize its all very hard.... creating, designing, building, manufacturing, testing, analyzing, marketing and then selling a plane... phew! its very hard work! with lot of components which can cause delays n stuff. plus safety is of highest priority for such project.
congratulations Boeing for a successful 787 program!
what are you talking about. mach .85 is somewhere around 650-700 mph. They said that the flight took 8 and a half hours. Everybody knows that Japan is a really long ways from here, several thousand miles, so I don't know what you mean by a four minute flight.
"this airplane has flown through many extreme conditions'' - what does it mean specifically? they deliberately flew the airplane into storm clouds or smth?
I must've gone to the wrong boarding gate and missed the plane. I thought the 787 was supposed to compete with the A-380 but clearly the A-380 can haul twice the payload. To me the 787 looks like a 767 so is this plane a replacement? Another thing I thought odd are the flexible wings. Are there any performance enhancements with a flexible wing structure over a more rigid wing as was common on former models? My preferred a/c is the B-717, it's like a cute Mercedes with wings.
I saw a simulation of the cockpit and I have some questions:
why if it is a Fly By Wire aircraft, the two yokes moves together, as well as the throttle control moves as the aircraft increase or decrease power (in the autothrust mode)???
what if I'm banking in more than 30 degrees and I don't let the yokes to correct the bank angle??
and what happens if I try to stall the airplane??
@airplanelov try imagine what will happen if you make some different move with both yokes. This is why they move together, throttle because if autopilot has 90% of thrust and you have set f.e. 20% you will confuse throttle control.
As most aircraft of this category I suppose it is unable to get out of spin, especially of flat spin. You will die at all :P
@airplanelov The yokes move together so that the Pilot Not Flying can see what the Pilot Flying is doing. The throttle still moves in A/T Mode so that the pilots have at least two indications (EICAS on the screen, and the throttles moving) of what the autopilot is doing. In FlybyWire, you can pull the yoke all the way back, but the A/P only lets the plane pitch 20 degrees up or whatever. You can idle the throttles but when you approach stall speed, they spool up to prevent a stall.
I'm really disappointed that every damn new plane that debuts looks almost identical to the last: Two engines on the wings. They all look like A-300 clones.
When a radical redesign of this stale template takes place, then I'll get excited
is 787 will replace the 767 or will it substitute the 777 or the 787 is a different class? what is the fuel consumption? is it more efficient then airbus in term of fuel, weight, capacity and distances? is 787 quiter compare to a330?
sorry for all the questions and sorry if my english is poor.... thx
Yes the 787 will eventually replace the 767 (no time soon though). and its more of a rival of the a350 than the a330. Compared to the a330 I would imagine the 787's Trent 1000's to be way more quiet than the a330's CF6-80E1A2s , PW-4164s or the Trent 768's.
@winterstellar For every new jet that is designed it becomes less noisy. For example, the 737 classic are very noisy but the NG are much more quiet. When I flew with the 737-500 couldn't hear the music but on the NG's it's better. So I think you can count the Dreamliner as a quiet airplane
@Deltapilot96 Thank you too for your comment! Just wanted to let you know too that we posted a video we produced a few months ago called "Boeing 787 turns down the volume" which shows how Boeing engineers reduced the noise profile of the 787 by 60 percent. Thanks!
@winterstellar Thanks for your comment. We posted a video we produced a few months ago called "Boeing 787 turns down the volume" which shows how Boeing engineers reduced the noise profile of the 787 by 60 percent.
@winterstellar Depends on where you might ask that its quieter if your outside the plane ohhh yeah its like a whisper compared to other planes unfortunately though the extremely thin carbon fiber fuselage isnt nearly as good of an audio dampener as a thick aluminum body so it may actually seem loud inside idk because ive never flown on it but this is what ive heard :/ P.S. GO BOEING!!!!
@Xiber1 It was discovered recently that almost oll the A380 had cracks on their wings. This was a complaint made by European safetey inspectors. Do some research they said the A380 had a lot of flaws on its wings because of the weight...improperly fixed.
this still is not the way forward to independent air travelf for people. We want smaller aircraft that can carry families to their destinations and fly themselves. Anybody can learn to fly and if it replaced the motor car it would become second nature. smaller airplanes are the way forward for public planes and the only way to get the price drop is to make it happen on a mass scale production.
Qantas has firm orders 50 boeing 787 and is expected to be delivered around mid 2013. Also Qantas has chosen the General Electric (GE) GEnx engines to power its Boeing 787 fleet.
Folks this got the most advanced cockpit system, the most fuel efficient, most environmentally friendly, most lightest & yet strongest composite material composed of, most quietest, best cabin air pressure/ air purification system & most comfortable ride for passengers in any plane ever built so far; I'm so very proud of you, Dreamliner!!! [with love from SanFrancisco]

@FreddyDrifter If you travel at supersonic speeds, fuel consumption will increase dramatically, so do the costs for maintenance. A supersonic plane like the concorde or the SST are (in the times we live in right now) neither economical nor ecological. The 787 was designed to be an efficient airplane and I think it does pretty well there...
It does have "winglets" in the form of a blended wing. The smaller version will have the old-school winglets because they need a shorter wing to fit into smaller spaces.
@uchilledfrance You're right about that it doesn't have winglets in a conventional way. However they designed the outer part of the wing to function as a winglet. You can see this design very good at about 0:46...
What's so great about it? It's big, so what? Still a subsonic plane that is slow a molasses. I like to get somewhere faster and not packed like a sardine in an overbooked bus like this. Where is the SST?
@FreddyDrifter If you want to know what's great about it, maybe do some research instead of asking whiney questions like Boeing is building planes just for you. It's incredibly fuel-efficient compared to anything else out there. The cabin pressure is at 6,000 feet (instead of 8,000) and thanks to the composite material is able to attain higher humidity, making the air inside much more pleasant to breathe/feel. I'm running out of room, so try wikipedia if you're still unconvinced.
How come this beauty does not have winglets or wing fences? I was under the impression that all new planes were fitted with winglets/wing fences by default. Guess I was wrong after all...
I was flying ANA for many times wonderful airline cool flight crew super service ! :-))) I was often flying there 744 or the 773ER I hope I can fly with one of 787 too :-))) God bless the aircraft and ANA ! greez Chris FDNY New York !
@MrRunescapeMaker What are you saying man? There is no aircraft in the world prettier than this lovely bird. And Air Canada does not have 747's in its current fleet. It has ordered though 787's.
Very nice airplane, would love to have the chance to fly in it. I cannot help feel that it's Boeing's beleated response to the european airbus family.
@johncliffe39 I kind of disagree with you on this as in my opinion, the BOEING 787 is a response to BOEING'S own 767 which is now aged for good. In addition, it is an entirely new way of flying and way different than anything the conventional aircraft industry had to offer so far.
ah this plane looks so peaceful up above the clouds and seems like its the airs smooth sister. i really like it.

FreddyDrifter 4 months ago

@MrRunescapeMaker 1.Air Canada doesn't operate 747's anymore.2.How can you compare a 787 to a 747?
03Wale 4 months ago
@MrRunescapeMaker What are you saying man? There is no aircraft in the world prettier than this lovely bird. And Air Canada does not have 747's in its current fleet. It has ordered though 787's.

Very nice airplane, would love to have the chance to fly in it. I cannot help feel that it's Boeing's beleated response to the european airbus family.
johncliffe39 4 months ago
@johncliffe39 I kind of disagree with you on this as in my opinion, the BOEING 787 is a response to BOEING'S own 767 which is now aged for good. In addition, it is an entirely new way of flying and way different than anything the conventional aircraft industry had to offer so far.

coolykid443 4 months ago
@coolykid443 "ANA" stands for All Nippon Airlines, a major Japanese carrier. Not American Airlines or whatever you were thinking of.
