Historically, the Butterfly Sword is a uniquely Southern style Chinese Kung Fu weapon because of it's association with Chinese pirates plying the South China Sea. The Butterfly sword was used by the pirates because long sabers was not practical for hand to hand fighting in the tight spaces of a ship. It is highly probable the sword design was inspired by encounters with Western swords such as rapiers and cutlasses used by the Spanish, Dutch and English sailors who appeared there in the 1500s.
I am working my way through this form now in my school in Taiwan. Sifu Lam seems to be leaving out sever transition moves...different lineage I suppose.
Im joining Kwan Ying Do in a week or so and i hope i get too use those, ive been wanting to start but are just now getting a chance, and i knew about these and want to get to them.
Hung Gar apparently makes use of longer butterfly swords than Wing Chun. In Wing Chun, the blade is supposed to be the length of the forearm from the thunb to the inner crook of the elbow. The shorter blade is used to make inside blocks. I suppose Hung Gar is a longer range style.
You know, this is the first time I've heard someone else say this outside my lineage. It's interesting, because it's real hard to find blades as short as we want them. I have a long reach, and most on the market are still too long. Where do you train?
I train in New Jersey and I get my butterflys words from Dr. Lee who runs ITG. He makes custom swords, however his standard swords are too long for my arms. I'm on the shorter side. The best length I've come across is a pair of Paul Chen Hanwei butterfly swords, and you can find those online.
And I thought MY hobbies were nerdy and lame. this is only a step above owning a bat'leth sword.
