  • The pilot(s) of any aircraft will reject a takeoff if there's any kind of problem during the takeoff roll that makes takeoff unwise, provided that the aircraft hasn't reached a speed and position that prevents it from coming to a complete stop on the runway. Brakes are always used to stop the aircraft in this case, but spoilers and reverse thrust can be used, too, in some cases. None of this is unique to the A330.

  • OK, we don't need F-35 anymore !!!

  • good ol ground effect

  • pretty strong headwind by the look/sound of it.

  • Faste that and helicopter at take off

  • That was like what... 25 ft?

  • thats ridiculous

  • This is how i get to schools everyday. just hop in and take off in my short driveway

  • what kinda plane was it??very nice take off

  • @ThePlaya12345678 It lookes like a Supercub but with some mods.

  • That was neat, I didnt know they had contests for STOL. Very well done. These are amazing pilots.

  • @CCWSig The amazing part comes from the plane. The pilot just has to push the throttle and pull the stick

  • Next he'll take off like an helicpoter

  • i would love to see how much headwind he had on takeoff, if no headwind id liek to see how long he has to roll before rotation err takeoff

  • @yamahonkawazuki good one

  • @britishairwayspilot1 ive been having fun with the spammers here. getting pathetic when htey spam yt vids, as well as email. hell soon enough we'll see it in online games

  • @yamahonkawazuki yeah true say

  • dont have a runway?? just use your driveway!

  • How Much Did He Weigh what was the outside temp and pressure ?

  • are helicopters allowed?

  • soaring high j bird fly!

  • That's cool!

  • Runways are for wusses.

"Tower, is there any chance I could get cleared to just take off from inside my hangar?"

  • Makes me wonder why I can't just flap my arms and take off!

  • looks more like lift off than take off!

  • V1Rotate!! :-D

  • that is so cool.

  • he could take off from his drive way and fly to work land in the car park!

  • @DMCcornish there is a city called "Cameron Airparc" where the citizens are mostly (when not only) pilots and they take off on their street and land at work... I hope I will live there too one day...

  • @highvoltagedrummer1 :O i want to live there!

  • hehe nice. strong headwind or was it just light and powerful?

  • thats sick

  • isnt real

  • @pixeluniform of course it's real. Piper cub are able to tako off in that short runway

  • @pixeluniform OK then troll, explain why you think it isn't real.

  • @pixeluniform You're fake, go home.

  • You know what folks? I am not worried about take off runway lenght at all. What I really worry is how much runway is needed for landing!!! Certainly not as short as it was for taking off ! Right? Hope it could land in the same lenght of runway.I f so then I am going to buy this kind of airplane, build a airfield of 40 feet in my village and I will be the most hapiest man in the world ! Lol

  • @Luke13verse5Repent So, what did you think about the video?

  • great skills

  • that was short

  • wow,

  • funny

  • 2 teachers from my school in England flew with this guy in Alaska. Both sat on the floor in tandem, behind the pilot with a little luggage. the remaining bags were lashed to the struts!!!

  • Winds are good for competition

  • i do that all the time... in my R44 :)

  • @22640cal Cheater...

  • I think it's funny when people get on here and criticize, like they can do better. Most probably don't even fly. I am not knocking the folk who are stating facts or making technical comments, just the silly people who try to make themselves appear more of an expert by belittling other peoples skills.

  • I can't get my kite off the ground in that kind of distance.

  • David Blane aerial magic

  • that is in perfect conditions, they add on stuff to the fuel that they normally don't. its just a contest. still is awesome to see though

  • @catnipdogfood not always, most pilots in contests like this don't add anything to the fuel, some add octane booster but not that many do.

  • @Flightkid9 and really only thing octane booster wil do is make an engine less prone to detonation. last thign a pilot wants

  • @yamahonkawazuki yes and no, it will only help stop the fuel from detonating from compression, it will still ignite fine when the spark plug sparks it, all octane booster would do is help get the full use of the fuel but in reality, unless the gas you're normally using is extremely low octane, it won't do that much really to increase the octane.

  • @Flightkid9 right. im sorry. i should have answered better. some believe you go to auto parts house. and get a bottle, throw it in tank, and you double horsepower. they are sadly mistaken. im not sure of teh specs on this engine. or anything. so to me its just a semi educated guess. ive gotten my hands on 120 octan avgas before. used to be able to get it by the barrel. had set my motorcycle to run on it. IIRC was leaded at the time. still may be im not sure. would love to find it again.

  • @yamahonkawazuki you also need the the performance exhaust, sticker, and aerodynamic foil to go with it.

  • @ChesterDoraemon dont forget teh bat wing spoiler. the fart can can be substituted for performance exhaust if the poser is broke lol

  • WOW! That's all I have to say.

  • WOW!!!!

  • Cub showing the STOL performance.

  • must have been a good headwind!

  • Hahaha :D Start with 5km/h speed.

  • well it was sure windy out there that's why. :))

  • hell of a head wind for that

  • lol

  • holy. shit.

  • I want one !.

  • Better than the f-35b XD

  • have a look at the flaps.

  • that was awsome

  • I'd like to know him if i were in some tight situations in Columbia...

  • good lord that was impressive.

  • Thats amazing. I want to get my tail-dragger endorsement.

  • he should build an airfield on his house :D

  • you would make a good drug smuggler

  • one got to love this things :)

  • lol, looks funny ;p

  • Robinson STOLkit.....

  • almost a VTOL

  • yeah there was a headwind, still the Vx on these cubs that have been modified are pretty incredible, even with now wind it would have been around the same, stout little aircraft

  • its wind

  • if you all look at 2 sec in you see the flaps go down really fast !

  • No this is a real video.

  • idiot

  • Reminds me of GTA San Andreas

  • yep, sure does lol

  • @Kedo93 lol me2

  • @Kedo93 lol kedo.. i see u on the AU forums

  • @Kedo93 True! I loved taking of with the "urkqsrk" stunt-plane on the little place in front of CJ "homebase"

  • maybe they should try that without headwind ;)

  • Wow! That's a shorter takeoff than an old German Storch

  • it has flaps look at the underside of the wing as it passes by the guy in the hi vis jacket

  • talk about power to weight ratio!

  • wow very short takeoff

  • the f-35 should borrow some of this technology.... lol

  • if by technology you mean no fuel in the tank and high drag wings.

  • A little more headwind and he could have taken off backward. Now that would be a sight to see.

  • @butlerproman flying backwards is easier in a Westland Lysander

  • @butlerproman Man, I haven't laughed out aloud in a while :) :)

  • @butlerproman ye and without power :)

  • @butlerproman I've seen them do so at cliffs actually! One basically pulled off a perfect 'hover' take-off against the wind.

  • How does he do that? P.F.M. maybe...?

  • this plane can do some amazing stuff and what a great skilled pilot to do that

  • I don't care who you are or what you fly. That was a cool take off.

  • Wow!

    Now that's STOL

  • thats awesome, all you need is a small street

  • haha! its like a helicopter

  • better

  • Under the definition of the term "STOL" .. it should just have a link to this video !! LOL !!

  • You'd have to be terribly gutsy to do that!

  • Oh, I REALLY hope the wind is calm next year.

  • Why does everyone seek to prove their intellignece on this topic instead of attempting to understand why someone would think a tailwind decresed the take-off roll? A tailwind does increase ground speed JMan after the plane is in the air but keep in mind an airplane must generate lift in order to fly which is produced by air striking the leading edge of a wing and flowing over it and under it. Airplanes always attempt to take-off and land into the wind for this reason.

  • Nice vids, I bet the Pilot that landed on the Hudson would be impressed! Now that's what I call a happy landing!

  • that has to b some strong headwind component

  • you mean tail wind

  • No, Headwind, u must not be a pilot or know anything about aerodynamics. A tailwind would increase the ground roll

  • No. U don't understand. A tail wind will result in a longer ground roll. (more time spent on the ground). A head wind increases air flow over the airfoil therfore creating more lift, shorter takeoff distance

  • :DD silly jman. speed relative to the ground doesn't matter, only the speed relative to air, hence when there is headwind, you go faster relative to the air than you would with tailwind.

  • Oh, sorry.

  • you obviously know nothing about aerodynamics JManGuitar5150. lol

A headwind = stronger/faster airflow over the wing during the takeoff role, thus more lift is created earlier in the takeoff role than would be normally.

A tailwind would have the opposite effect, where life would actually be diminished and the takeoff role would be longer.

The physical forward speed has absolutely nothing to do with takeoff distance.. it's the speed of the airflow over the wing.

  • @X6insane6X dammit you stole my thunder. in his case. id simplify it. strong headwind = more lift. shorter takeoff, but lower speed. strong tailwind = longer take off but slightly higher speed

  • think about flying a kite. You dont go running with the wind to launch it. you run into it.

  • That's actually a really good way to explain it.

  • No! Tailwind makes your takeoff LONER, because the speed of air bleeding past your wings is LOWER. Headwind increases speed of air bleeding past your wing so you get enough lift EARLIER :)

  • Jesus, I said sorry and I understood now.

  • I agree!! the only way to take off this way!!!

  • That was cool!

  • i could take off from my roof lol

  • holy crap!... takes me longer to launch a kite!

  • AMAZING ALSO WITH STRONG WIND

  • OMG

  • could be four cylinder engine with strong frame.

  • How much Headwind was involved there? hahaha... But still good takeoff =)

  • he couldnt do this without all that headwind

  • That was like 20 meters or so

  • @Archimedes555453525 just 12 meters

  • how much would a modified Supercub like this would cost ?

  • epic win!

  • grrrrrrreeeeeeeeaaat video of my favorite plane=))

  • i always loved the look of a cub

  • Nice headwind takeoff :)

  • i was there that day and there wasn't much wind

  • WTF?

  • wow :O

  • the original cub could take off pretty dam quick let alone a super cub those wings were HUGE cuz the 4 cylinder engine had to be able to get it into the air going less than 60 mph

  • some cubs are 2 cylinder now and this one probably is

  • this is Realy?

  • I've seen autogyros that couldn't quite match this takeoff/landing performance...

  • that was walking pace!! LOL.. sweet!

  • i was there, the wind was only blowing about 10 to 13 mph.

  • nooo way

  • I had music playing and I still heard that strong headwind! No wonder he got up so fast!

  • I bet he didin't have much fuel in the tanks lol!

  • No need to fake it. With a strong headwind, STOL aircraft in particular can actually fly with with less ground roll than this, and even be flying backwards if you want to. If you've seen the movie "The Gods must be crazy II", you'll see one such aircraft doing that. Don't know if they used special effects for that particular stunt, but with that strong of a wind, they wouldn't have had too.

  • eh looks like strong headwind ..cool tho

  • your dumb!!

    there ya happy

  • Since when are strong headwinds and very light planes fake??

  • These planes are ideal for island nations!

  • this seems like a pointless competition if headwind speeds are not factored. Excluding uniqueaircraft factors such as weight, design and engine performance, the pre-existing wind (which the pitot-tube would read as a positive airspeed x>0 when the aircraft is stationary) is critical info to making any reasoned judgments about these stunts.

  • lol crap they would be hard to land with

  • One of the few planes I have ever seen fly backwards..

  • Wow, was there a headwind at all?

  • lol that would be great on my roof

  • Amazing!

  • I got to get me one of them!

  • Hell yeah! I would love a cub!

  • wow dude up within a second

  • Too much flap on take off will increase the drag more than it will lift. These high aircraft are already in ground effect when they take off, that coupled with the large airfoil is what makes them STOL.

  • You guys know this happens because of PFM... not tailwinds or headwinds or even flaps for that matter.

  • You're one of theses losers who make the dumb 'fake' claim to receive attention, arn't you?

  • Good on you.

  • Be sure to check out the other scenes shot on the same day. I sure spent lots of time faking all these takeoff videos at the short field takeoff contest in Valdez, Alaska.

  • LOL! Nice one.

  • No Flaps plus its using those fat high drag bush tires... Very Impressive... I would say a good head wind... light fuel load... light pilot equals a way cool STOL takeoff run!!

  • You will notice he uses flaps to 'un-stick' the aircraft during rotation.

  • I think taking off those tundras and maybe extend the strut length would give better performance

    (Less drag, while maintaining AOA)

  • cool video, i missed the airshow that year, but I've seen Paul fly his turbin otter there a few years ago, now that is somthing to see... its one thing to see him do that in a 900lb super cub, but when he does it in the otter its crazy! very good pilot with a VERY good plane.
