@see4el9 Sadly, I don't think it's cowardice that has resulted in these tactics - it's not having tanks, helicopters or fast jets as part of your armoury. They're using Sun Tzu's The Art Of War to deadly effect.

It just seems to me that a conversation took place between the soldier and the driver in which it was made clear what was about to happen. This video has been edited. The soldier does not stand at attention, he actually turns and runs away from the vehicle. Gets about 15 feet away before the VBIED goes off. Who ever made this has it incorrect. The only reason to stand at attention at a checkpoint is to salute officers. You do not salute officers in a war zone being exposed.
@sfcornett I think you've misunderstood the poem - I believe the checkpoint soldier was told by the car bomber what was about to happen and, knowing running was futile, simply stood to attention as a true soldier. The footage came from a bona fide news website and hasn't been edited - perhaps you could tell me what leads you to believe that it has?

It does seem to me the soldier stood to attention when he knew what was about to happen. I have to ask myself what I would've done had I been in that terrible situation.
@PoetryAgainstWar This did not happen in 2006 nor at 8. It took place in the final months of 2005 and at 12. The soldier was a Sgt from the California National Guard. The bomber attempted to gain access into the IZ by entering the Military By-pass lane. When the soldier asked for his badge to use the by-pass lane, the bomber wasn't able to provide it, so the soldier told him to turn back and go through the normal lanes. The Bomber agreed to do that, but instead detonated the bomb.

The reason he snaps to attention is because when your doing roadguard/ECP duty when you complete your inspection your supposed to snap to attention.

@PoetryAgainstWar This did not happen in 2006 nor at 8. It took place in the final months of 2005 and at 12. The soldier was a Sgt from the California National Guard. The bomber attempted to gain access into the IZ by entering the Military By-pass lane. When the soldier asked for his badge to use the by-pass lane, the bomber wasn't able to provide it, so the soldier told him to turn back and go through the normal lanes. The Bomber agreed to do that, but instead detonated the bomb.

@SilenttempestZX Absolutely correct. It was Oct 12th 2005. I was on the right side of the video, jus over the other side of the palace wall, thankfully. That was FOB Prosperity on the right. Skeerd the shit outta me, lmao. Always wondered who that Soldier was, and have always prayed for him and his family. I was with 3rd ID then. Wish I was still with them, my old Platoon, or at least my Battallion.

@ika531 Agreed...this happened 1 day after i got into an arguement with a SGT in the checkpoint....i told his Iraqi police to keep a car back as i was pulling rear security (civilian cars have their own line and shouldnt be pulling through mine)..anyhow..i told them to keep this car back and this E-6 jumped my ass saying not to worry about it because i was coming into a secure area...i told him "with all due respect SGT you worry about your ass and i'll worry about mine" this happened next day
