This is a very great performance. I have no luck on the violin myself, couldn't get anywhere on the vibrato.Beethoven's Hammerklavier is more appropriate for me !
In my opinion, the best concert I've ever heared. The poor sound of the non played "Canone" has no influance of the preciose fingertechnic and the intonation.
All in all Shlomo counted to the best violinists alive in this century!
Beautiful of course. Although I love Massimo Quarta interpreation, Shlomo here, I am mesmerized. Outstanding. I need a good Hi-Fi upgrade on my PC. :)
I liked very much his relaxed approach and interpretative freedom. Most fiddlers who play this concert seem daunted and worried about not making mistakes. Shlomo plays it on a slower pace and looks very calm and confident all the way. He clearly enjoys what he is doing.
What I didn't like was his volume. Playing the "Cannone" he should play louder. I acknowledge that violin recordings are not the same as alive, but I've heard other versions with a more loud and brilliant sound.
I once compared shlomo to perlman with paganini 24 caprices that I slowed down to a quater speed and Shlomo was cleaner on each note and less sloppy then perlman by far. He is an amazing player But I do miss his long hair when he was younger, the Gene Wilder from young frankenstein hair " we all have to behave normally" as the tie comes apart.
From 5:33 there are 2 passages which I thought were meant to be played in harmonics. I don't see why he can't do it, it's not too hard (relatively) and I think it can sound very nice. But anyway, I thought it was the right way to do so (either Paganini wrote it as harmonics, or at any rate it is normal practice)
Wow. Awesome. Thanks for posting this. Is Shlomo changing the tempo periodically or is that the conductor? I don't mean randomly changing it, but who makes the artistic decision regarding tempo, pauses, etc. in a concerto? Again, thanks for posting this!
Paganini must have had this thing with the G-string. Up high like that make him have to pull the string more. Making it hard to keep a smooth bowing and mantain a decent tone. Paganini you little monster you.
Goodness, this is beautiful. Just watching Mintz play is something. Everything is so light and easy, and there's no tension whatsoever. He makes everything seem so easy. Haha, I'm inspired.
Il Canon has been lent several times, flown on a private plane with 10 armed guards at all times. 2 Americans that I know of fairly recently who were lent this violin were Regina Carter and gee, can't think of the guys name! The guards stay with it at all times. A complete security check is done on the artist. They are very careful and it is much appreciated that Il Canon is shared with the world so that all can hear. Once a month it is taken out and played briefly in Italy.
On special occasions they lend Paganini's Cannon violin to contemporary performance. This time Cannon travelled to California when they lent it to Mintz, you can see that the little white thing at the top of the scroll. Usually this thing is black, but Paganini's Cannon has this thing is white.
but this white nut is what on paganini's cannon viloin, and i read in wikipedia that cannon was lended to mintz for a concert in califirnia, so i came to the conclusion, it must be the exact performance.
That violin has not been taken out and played much..your are exactly right. It has places where it almost hits a nasal sound simply because it stays locked up all the time and needs to be played hard for a long time
I have this section in my notes but I don't play it, I dont think Paganini wrote that cause it sounds so trashy... kogan for example doesn't play this section too.
really incredible but not my preferred recording... there are a lot of dirty parts, accardo recording is much better and perlman recording is just perfect
This was live with no opportunity to stop and cut-plus the fact that he was playing on a strange violin that was way over sized for him. Personally, I can't just pick up somebody's elses instrument and "knowd" it, the harmonics vary just a smidge and you have to make friends with violins. He clearly put a lot passion into this performance and there is fire in it. While there are a couple of performers I prefer this was really a great performance and I wouldn't call parts "dirty"
And plus it is GIGANTIC with a huge fingerboard..imagine trying to find harmonics on it after you are used to your own violin! It is made for a person with a huge hand-he has small hands.
E' davvero un grande virtuoso, non vedo l'ora di ascoltarlo dal vivo al concerto per Vidas a Milano il 12 febbraio!

Believe it or not, even Heifetz was a distance away from Mintz in handling those awesome staccato bowings!

Those harmonics are killer anyone who can pull that off deserves my respect and others.

@violin144000 agreed. I am so terribly sloppy with the doubles that I had to divide those up in singles.

possible possible. it was lended to Mintz, the trip of Cannon to Califirnia cost just under 10 million USD. Security + insurance + private plane.

in the last movement mintz dont play the ritornello pizzicato whit left hand really?misterious

The left pizzizato is not written by Paganini in the finale recapitulation. Accardo improvised it.

Why is this movement longer than I'm used to, does anyone know? There's a whole section I don't recognize starting at 5:11.
