  • Great slap brother!!! Nice groove

  • Hi ! Great Video! But for the doublethumb, I have more difficult with a 5 strings bass... Have you some advices for this?

  • @ MarloweDK Quick question which do you prefer P bass or the jazz bass? Which is more versatile? i cant decide which to buy. Thanks you rock.

  • @PsnIDShMuK I prefer jazzbasses for versatility

  • I love Victor Wooten

  • IS ANYBODY HERE WILLING TO DONATE A BASS GUITAR LOL TO ME!!! I WILL REALLYYY APRECIATE IT .. IM A BROKE COLLEGE STUDENT :/

  • his face while playing (._.)

  • awesome - really awesome grooves - as always

  • You're 'Fairly new' to this technique? I'd love to see you after you've practiced haha.

Great vids. Really informative and inspiring.

  • did you ever wanted to expand to duble plucking????

  • are you Danish

  • you think of (Kramer Disciple Bass Guitar with Active Electronics and Squier by Fender Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz Bass) help from Venezuela thousand blessings ..

  • (VENEZUELA URGENT) hello friend let me know if you can help me choose a bass as I've seen that are very good and I respect your opinion I would like to know the person can play bass as well as to the assets? It matters a lot ... I play in a Christian evangelical church but the bass that I'm buying

I want to serve me to play .. slap, ballads, jazz and my presupuessto is weak please help me to choose ..

  • That bass is soo awesome!

  • If i can play this how well does it scale me as a bassist? double thumb technique wise, ofcourse?

  • I saw Wooten teaching this technique on the 1993 video with Bailey.

  • @MarloweDK I belive that this lesson is pretty awesome to master double thumbing. But could you explain/show it a little bit slower like you did in this perfect video tutorial, please:

    "4. Slap bass lesson - beginner/intermediate "

I need to know that I'm playing exactly the same notes to be sure I do everything right.

  • Now that I've finally figured out how to play this, more or less, I think you did quite a damn great job in writing/proposing it. It has got more soul, funk and slight rhythm guitar approach than I thought in the beginning, genius.

  • you make everything look so simple. i hate you out of pure jealousy! i would cut my own legs off if i could gain your arms where my legs were...then i'd really shred on bass with 4 arms!

  • i love you marlowe

  • hey can I see you play that six string behind you?!! i always see your four strings!!! but they still sound cool anyways!

  • hey marlowe can u clarify 0:33 - 0:45 ..can't really get it :(

  • god! eargasm! lol

  • i like when you play it fast you end up getting harmonics while popping the g string. very cool

  • i've seen so many of your videos! your amazing

  • Hey MarloweDK a quick question, what strings do you use?

I'm having trouble getting "thump" from my J Bass, any ideas?

  • @MetalKidDanny

Try some DR fat beams and a Sadowsky outboard preamp or VTbass preamp or equiv. With a standard passive J bass you'll get what your looking for. :)

  • @markdlowe Yep, I'm using Sadowsky for a long time now, they are the bomb, and I have the VT Bass Deluxe, my strings were just old apparently :P, I was just interested what stuff did you use.

BTW, I have my Jazz Bass fitted with a J-Retro preamp, it's insane.

  • @MetalKidDanny Hi, I'm using a 75 Jazz bass with a TC450, was using a VT bass but also going to a J retro too! That's freaky how close the gear is. Sadowsky, I did us an RV5 for a few years and it was an awesome bass, live they sound killer and play really well. Worth the bucks for sure.

  • You should explain a little bit in your video, because I still only have a general idea about what you're doing.

  • yeah, i love slap lessons XD

  • It's very nice to show us your technics. Many thanks. I' m a fan of your video

  • The F# (4th. fret D string) you index pluck at 0:23 is a mute note playing fast, but regular note playing slow? I've learned this lick but When I started getting it faster, i've noticed something wrong.

The correct way is to MUTE the 0:23 index pluck note? Or press normally the string as the slow version tell us?

    Thanks, Marlowe.

  • becuase of the different technique ..will this effect the way i slap bass

  • hey guys, my name is josh, and im a 16 year old bassist. i would really appreciate it if you guys checked out my bands videos on my page and left feedback. we've been playing for about 3 years together. thanks!

  • Jestem w szoku, że tak pięknie można zagrać na bsie! Perfekt.

    Staszek

    Poland :)

  • Od dziś jesteś moim idolem

  • It's really useful that you play it slowly at the end so lesser gods likje me can make sense of it and start practising!

    Thanks, Rob

  • Tak for videon Thomas, skal prøve det en af dagene :)

  • great man i love your videos!

  • man thats amazing - can you make a tab or somthin?

  • nice marcus bass!

  • Perfect, that the way bass should sound, that's the groove, not boring tapping stuff on Stuart Hamm's CD's and similar.

Bass without the groove is boring. You are PERFECT bassist and your videos are great, regards.

  • YOu're full of shit.Stu Hamm is far from boring idiot.

  • does the bass/strings add to the sound of slap? cause im pretty decent at slap n pull... but i can NOT get this tone. lol.

  • the tone depends on a lotta things really, what bass/amp/strings you got, the way you play. in this video it sounds like he's got pretty new strings cos they have a really bright clean tone, and theres probly a good bit of mids on the amp.

  • you wanna roll off the bass and all a little treble to your tone...thats my ideal slap tone at least...try it out and see how it works

  • Strings can have a bit of an effect I know. Typically for slap you'll want newer, brighter strings, maybe around a 105-110 gauge. I'd recommend GHS Boomers, they're a little pricey but they're good. As for the bass it does, but I"m not sure how much.

  • im lovin the 6 string back there awesome playin!!

  • jeez i cant keep up with you... and it is pretty hard to see all the notes when you play it slow

  • Yeah! Good!

  • FaLaTiCi, i would like to see you play anything better than this guy. r-tard.

  • im a guitarist but very bass minded when i get to 20 im moving onto bass form geetar

  • I don't even play bass, but this sounds awesome!

  • Thanks for filling up my "Favorites" You Tube file. This line, like all your others, is SMOKIN'.

  • sometimes it's funny just watching how nonchalant and unchallenged Marlowe's face is when he's playing what most bassists would find near impossible! lol

  • man your unreal!!! non one of your videos has been less than amazing from bass player to bass player keep these videos commin there helping me improve my skills more and more each day thanks bro

  • i sound and look retarded when i try to do that.

  • ..just when your playing bass eh? :P

  • ive been playing the wooten style hammer on the downbeat for a while now... a good warm up is play open A, hammer on at 12 on A, then play 14 twice on the G string... sounds funky and is an excellent warm up for me

  • ive only just started slapping

hope to be as good as you some day

    that bass is amazing purely

  • very helpful vid....thanks marlowe. i butchered this peace for days til i got the hang of it.

  • i swear u taught one thing nand played another at the end

  • Man, you have so many good tutorials and show off video's, it seems like you do nothing but play Bass all day! Hope you make a living out of it, and if you don't, you should!

  • He works on music world, it's a great thing from him that teaches people on the web for FREE!!! Thank you MarloweDK by one of your best students!!!

  • fairly new? You look like you've been doing it for years

  • very good , really good

  • Cool.

    Thanks for posting this video!!

    Danny.

  • That's just HOT!!

  • This technique is great deffo worth a try for any slap bassist. I responded with a couple of other things you might want to try out. =)

I can't seem to double thumb on any other bass but mine. I have a ramp that joins the body and fingerboard and stops me from going too far inbetween the strings, when i pick up another bass i thumb to far in and when its time to come up my thumb is too far behind the string. I guess my bass has got me into a bad habbit.

  • So what, you should be slapping YOUR bass anyway:)

I have the same "problem" with many basses

  • @MarloweDK your really good dude, i am into the slap bass myself but this double thumb thing is really tricky, this is my first shot at this technique and it is quite a challenge, ive got your riff down its just no where near the tempo in which you play it, just one question really, how long did it take you to get the double thumb technique down?

Great video and riff by the way!

  • Dude.

I have every one of your videos saved on my computer under the heading:

Learn this when you become awesome.

    You're an inspiration bro.

  • Clean. That was great.

  • are you moby?

  • @LFCBirdy he4 doesnt look like moby and is ten times more talented. idiot XD

  • @LFCBirdy

    Who's moby?

  • the upstroke isn't fairy clear for me, Your doing it with your thump nail or something?

  • It actually can be done with your thumb nail, but it's recommended to do the upstroke with the same part of your thumb that you hit the string. For example, Vic Wooten always does it this way:)

  • I've heard if ya practice ALOT a knotty little corn starts getting solid on that side of the thumb and it becomes alot easier to do...Thats where Wes Montgomery got a lot of his sound from, using the thumb and that tough skin that grew on the thumb

  • It's the damping I am having a problem with. What's the answer?

  • lol sounds like seinfeld

  • you should try for all your videos the same thing..i mean slowing the tempo and showing us what you play..thanx a lot..you re very groovy!!!

  • Sometimes i perform, other times i teach;-)

  • i love how u just sit there and stare at the camera and play all this amazing stuff

  • hey man u're awesome!! i hope u read my comment and post other funk videos, because i know all your videos here on youtube...excellent groove !! awesome :)

  • thanks for accepting my video response marlowe

you have been reall influential to me :)

  • claypool all over your ass haha, awesome groove

  • Hey Marlowe.

I'm trying to get this double slap thing down. I can do it, but I find it so hard to keep a consistency between the down and up stroke (tone, attack etc). Any tips?

  • are you using your index finger too or just thumb?

  • index too

  • everything about that sounded amazing; the playing, the tone, and the bass

  • I agree. Very clean.

  • is that a marcus miller signature bass?

  • yes it is, and the guy makes honour to him

  • your one of the only people ive seen on youtube that can play slap bass cleanly. almost everyone i see is sloppy as hell, ecspecially at the upstroke. good job man, glad to see someone doin' it right. props

  • double thumbing sounds funky, but it doesn't sound powerfull enough in my ears.

  • Wups, I gotta go practice some more.

  • du er jo syg mand

    hvor er det nice!

  • I'm having a hard time getting a clean sharp tone on the up stroke of the thumb ... maybe if I had a nice hard callus there ... I don't find it that hard to understand, just tricky to do cleanly. Practice! :D

  • to pudsy440:

I dont have a hard callus there, its more the sound of the nail

  • ahhh ... so you're actually hitting with the nail ... I see I see said the blind man ... :) gracias!

  • to Pudsy:

side of thumb , including side of nail

  • hmmm that's crazy i never used my nail to do it before i must try this. i just have a big callus like that kid said lol. i can see the nail giving it a cleaner tone more like a pick i must try now.

  • to scat4u:

Not using nail per se, i just meant the whole side of thumb including nail (nail is notcontributing much to sound)

  • yeah i couldn't really just use my thumbnail lol.

  • Hi. I just started to try double thumb, and it feels weird for me, I don't rly understand the whole technique. I slap then go through, then pluck up basically like with my nail?

  • YOU WICKED

  • What do you mean you are fairly new to double thumb you have already mastered it!

  • great lesson

    and great groove

  • LOOKIN LIKE JOHN PATTITUCCI

  • WHO ARE YOU?? Cool you're playin your butt off. Thanks.

  • man your bass is my dream

  • I have it :)

  • lucky guy :)

but I´m going to have one soon

  • Your freaking awesome!

  • I am not a guitar player but not a bass player. But I like your style. You are awesome.

  • I mean I am a guitar player.

  • Grazie. Lavoro veramente interessante e stimolante. Ottimo

  • Cool one.

It took me some hours to get it straight.

    Nice use of open strings!

    Keep on going!

  • cool

  • kicsit tróger avgy de igen jól tolod re3p5t

  • Thank you for playing this slowly for all of us to learn from!

  • Nice sound. Is that the Marcus Miller sig? I didn't even know it came in Olympic White. I like the natural one a bit better, but from what I have seen from your videos you already have some natural basses.

Nice sound too, that Wooten double slap is hard to master.

  • It's not a miller signature ;) and it doesn't come in anything but the natural.

  • GREAT JOB!

  • your tone sounds slightly over driven, great tone still bro

  • Hej Marlowe.

Først og fremmest tak for herlige video med nyttigt bas =)

Rigtig svedige jams du har også. Tænkte om du ville forsøge at give dig i kast med noget Marcus Miller?

  • that is an amazing tone you have there brother... i love it!

  • what kind of amp do you use?

  • damn..... i like this riff more when it was played at 40 secs..... i felt that like... RIGHT THERE man...

     whew..

i think i just had a spiritual orgasm...

  • agreed

  • Thanks!

  • look @ those basses behind!

  • Excellent Teacher by Italian!!

  • Great videos my friend. I am a fairly advanced bassist but these really helped me refine my technique and add some new tricks.

Maybe a tapping lesson is in order?

    thanks, and keep it up!

  • To UGApplehead:

Tapping is not my thing, i actually mostly do things i can use in a real playing scenario ie groove oriented stuff. I'm fairly simple in that sense:-)

  • very nice!!!!

    by japanes

  • how long have you been playing?

  • Wow, great tone!

  • Nice, just another YouTube Vid that makes me feel shity at bass.

  • i totally agree wit u...i want to give up right now

  • never give up guys..

  • nice groove, how exactly can you afford so much equipment?

  • to boonokian:

Its gathered in a 20 year span

  • i was just gonna ask how much it costs you to restring all your basses XD. and thanks a lot for making these videos. i have actually learned a lot from these. and am trying to learn vic's tech. myself.

  • OMFG, that was AWESOME...

dude, I know nothing about you but anyway I think you should be on a stage playing for thousands of people xD, seriously.

  • Just so every one knows if you click on MarloweDK username located on the right of this video he lists what basses and equipment he is using in his profile.

  • this is hella good work bro.

    keep it up.

thx for the tutorial on the riff. helps alot.

  • what bass is that?

  • Marcus Miller 72" Jazz Bass

    isn't it?

  • wow, double thumb with poppin' is prett hard:|, i'll keep trying though.. gotta take some time.

one question though, how do you pop without moving your finger so much? you just seem to keep it in place.. very hard, come's with time?

  • are these drums any pandora rhythm ?

  • yup

  • Hey - lovin tha funk! I picked up slap fairly quickly and can get some good speed out of it but - double thump just isn't clicking for me! Guess I'll just need to keep working hard!

Any tips on how you got to grips with it at first? cheers!

  • as "borat" would say....very nice...

  • Oh my! A true fan!;-D

  • And proud of it!!! I'm lookin for the funk and nothing but the funk...lol

  • Is that a 6 string BTB in the back ground? I'm getting a black 5 soon. I've been working on this double thumb milarky and I must be doing it wrong. Just feels a bit stiff. Any tips?

  • heyy pls marlowe can u send me the tabs of this. It will be helpful..thankss!!

  • heyy pls marlowe can u send me the tabs of this. It will be helpful..thankss!!

  • damn man, i'm surely gonna try that one,, thanks:D

  • Hej.

  • Do you pull/pluck with your index finger or your middle finger? Just curious. I'm not a slap player but I like to hear it occassionaly if it's done correctly as you seem to do. Thanks for the vids bro!

  • Good show! Great that you show the slowed-down version.

  • Hi Marlouw, you are a good bassist man! I am really got inspired by the school groove lessons. Would you mind if I grob those video ??

  • As long as you dont sell them its ok;-)

  • of course not! Probably if I have reached the groove I will teach for others like you do.

    Blessed you!!

  • That is a kick ass bass lick

  • Double thumb? ;)

  • that was incredible but if you ever look at me like that again i will be forced to kill you

  • :-D

  • GOOD VERY GOOD!!!!

  • very nice, marlowe if you ever think of selling that trb, plz contact me :)

  • JØSSSES!!!! Og så en dansker!!! Nu er det atter muligt at være stolt over at være dansk. Godt gået!!

  • hov! det dér er jo decideret tight!shiiit. vi ringes
