Though I'm no fan of classical music, this piece speaks to me. It says, "make sure your kidneys have been emptied and you've got the popcorn, because you're on for one king-hell movie".
Outstanding score. It must have really been something to see this in a theater back in '59.
It was unbelievable. Some movies are a true EXPERIENCE when you see them on the big screen. I'd already seen Ben-Hur near 20 times before then, but it was like seeing it for the first time, brand new. I got chills when the Overture came on.
My theater had a classic showing twice every Monday for a year, I really lucked out. Sadly they don't do it anymore. :( Not enough ticket sales I guess. It was generally full of the same 15-25 people everytime I went.

When I was a boy I saw this movie in the biggest theater in Tokyo. I was staggered at how great it was. This movie and the music has been part of my life since then.
I have always seen this film growing up on Easter...I read the book in high school, and it has always stayed with me. I found a copy of the film when I was in the Navy, so the music brought me here...memories...
This soundtrack... heck, this whole movie is without a doubt the greatest example of cinematic perfection. The Academy Awards don't always get it right, but the fact that this movie is the most successful shows that they do get it right sometimes... 11 awards, BUT 12 by today's standards.
A composer with his own style, clear voice and sound, setting to music an epic tale, nothing can exceed such grand and glorious musical statement. Bravo Mr. Rozsa.
I will never forget the first time I saw this movie. I don't remember how old I was, but my sibs and I saw it on one of those old Cinemascope screens at our local moviehouse. I was just blown away and this has remained a film favorite ever since. I'd love to own this on DVD.

Stunning opening music, some of the finest ever written for the cinema. Only Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings score can come anywhere near this in the modern era.
@TheVaughan5 Disagree somewhat, you see flashes of those grand sweeping scores in movies like Conan the Barbarian, the 13th Warrior, and King Arthur by composers like Basil Polidorus, Jerry Goldsmith, and Hans Zimmer. Sadly, the compositions of these movies were undercut by the dodgy quality of the movies themselves. Although I have a real soft spot for the 13th Warrior they don't make 'em like they used to.
Thanks for this posting. Rozsa was one of the finest when it came to film scores and this was probably his masterpiece - Hollywood at its best, modern versions just pale in comparison. The only contemporary composer of this stature I think is Howard Shore who's score for Lord of the Rings is comparable to the greats of the past.
I was five when I saw this film for the first time. Since then I've seen it many times thru the years on TV. What an epic film it made a great impression on me, the music the cinematography they don't make em like this anymore. That chariot scene was one of the best action sequences in movie history. It still stands up today to any of the special effects of the modern movies, in my opinion.
I don't believe in God, but I think this movie & The Ten Commandments are among the best films. Good movies can make me believe anything... for at least three hours & thirty minutes (: BTW Spartacus is the best movie of all time.

@2TenAngel Being a NIHILIST means you feel life has no value and meaning, and there is no god. ...This allows you to kill, rape , steal, cheat without guilt nor care doesnt it..lol...too bad...you WILL be judged whether you like it or not.... in the end you will understand.

Oh, how I adore this lost idea of cinema. I can only imagine what was like to step in one of those glorious movie palaces of the time, and be presented with such a marvelous intro of glorious, overwhelming music to get you in the mood for the movie that came after it. So sad that so much people download movies with crappy quality and then say that "yeah I saw it, it was not that great". Shame on them.
@Dockelektro Saw it in a cinema just 2 days ago. The overture alone sent shivers down my spine. The filmroll was compilated of different pieces , most of it more than 50 years old with damages and transiton points visible, parts were more detailed and brilliant than I ever had imagined while others were vanishing into the red mist. We got a glimpse of all those preparations, manual work and love of film that is required to make this screening possible wich makes me appreciate this even more.
@Dockelektro You're so right, these 70mm and Cinerama films were made to be seen in a large theatre with a huge screen and of course stereo sound to match. They were magical days and I was born just in time to witness them and the memories will stay with me forever. Today's young generation have no idea what it was like going to the movies in those days - strangely, advanced technology has denied them that experience.
@imonlydoingthisonce1 That's good I'm glad that these old movies are sometimes revived and seen in the way they were intended by the producers. What I actually meant by advanced technology is that parrallel to that, theatres have become smaller and bland, sound is better (sometimes) but image is often very bad and colourless The experience of seeing a major movie in a big movie palace with marvellous projection and sound has virtually disappeared with a few exceptions.
@TheVaughan5 Not all movies are and were made to be played on huge screens in a very fancy fashion. Most movies were sent to local theaters and seen in a similar way that we seem movies today.
@Dockelektro You may have to do a spot of travelling, but it is do-able:
We showed it last night at the Astor Theatre in Melbourne - the sound is simply phenomenal in Dolby Stereo 70mm Six-Track.
Ironically the "OVERTURE" title card seen is this video is from the DVD - the theatrical presentation, in both 35mm and 70mm, has the soundtrack over black - obviously you run the overture with curtains closed and people come out to ask why the lights are still up and there's no picture.
I am 15 years old, my father had this movie and I remember when i was little, i was always waiting for the horse race. After a while i thought my VHS version of this movie was defective, I found the copy of the film and watched it again, THIS IS TRULY ONE OF THE BEST FILMS I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE.
@jd123456789reservoir _ Great to see that young people enjoy the great movies of the 20th century - Totally agree with you - It is probably the best film ever made. God Bless!
oh yes the GREATEST film score ever. thank you for posting this. I am harvesting this via realplayer then converting to mp3. We had bought at least 3 vinyls of this music and worn them out. I taped it, but the casette broke.
I am 58 - this movie is a favorite in our family, our dad + all us kids. thank you again - (kiss)
I am 55. I first saw this movie in the theaters! It is my all-time favorite movie, the chariot race, to me, is the most exciting 9 mins in movie history. I also find the music very compelling, well scored and performed to perfection.
This music is much more than just beautiful, it's magical. It almost takes you back 2 thousand years ago to breezy, ancient Palestine and the advent of the Christ. Like Judah Ben Hur: Previously rich but now rendered a dirt poor slave by Roman abuse, and yet enriched in totally unforeseen ways. What a movie.
@hlaltimus A good writer can bring you into their world by telling an excellent story. The same is true of a composer such as John Williams or Rozza. The first note you hear you are swooped up into this magical world, like being transported in time. We all want to hear a good story, whether it's through music or words. My preferred way is through music.
I am 44 years old and I am still watching it until now..truly great setting and the soundtrack by Miklos Rozsa is simply amazing, a right blend of culture, believes, history and it's souly impressed! ..thanks for posting
hi kronos251,
can i want the mp3 send to me too? thanks so much. cheers*
After hearing this for the first time, I realized how music - especially classical music - can actually speak to the individual. What it always says to me is "You're in for one helluva story."
How true.
I've seen this movie about a hundred times, but I want to see it just once on the big screen before I leave this earth. Man, watching this in an old time movie theater back in '59 must have really been something.
@benhurfanclub I too would like to see this film on the big screen before I go. Hope that happens for both of us, in '59 I was only 2 so it didn't happen for me back then.
@franzie50 I think our best and only hope are repertory theatres. Or, for those among us that can afford it, just rent one of today's mainstream theatres and invite a few friends. And perhaps open it up to the general public for a weekend.
Not a bad idea if you think about it. Might even turn a profit, since Ben Hur is still leagues beyond most movies being made today.
This music is of an epic scale that even today, cannot be matched. Only a soundtrack like this could have given Ben Hur's epic story the musical force it deserved.
I don'ty know why the scene where Ben-Hur, his mother & Tirzah drink to Simonedes' & Esther's happiness and safe return to Antioch (a still of which is on the original VHS & DVD covers) was deleted from the film. Is the actual scene available anywhere?
Check out my strings rendition of the Ben-Hur love theme!

I am 55. I first saw this movie in the theaters! It is my all-time favorite movie, the chariot race, to me, is the most exciting 9 mins in movie history. I also find the music very compelling, well scored and performed to perfection.

This music is very relaxing. I can't belive that I've listened it all the day.

@hlaltimus Well said Good Sir...It really sounds like the music of the time period

After hearing this for the first time, I realized how music - especially classical music - can actually speak to the individual. What it always says to me is "You're in for one helluva story."
How true.
I've seen this movie about a hundred times, but I want to see it just once on the big screen before I leave this earth. Man, watching this in an old time movie theater back in '59 must have really been something.
benhurfanclub 1 year ago
@benhurfanclub I too would like to see this film on the big screen before I go. Hope that happens for both of us, in '59 I was only 2 so it didn't happen for me back then.
franzie50 1 year ago
@franzie50 I think our best and only hope are repertory theatres. Or, for those among us that can afford it, just rent one of today's mainstream theatres and invite a few friends. And perhaps open it up to the general public for a weekend.
Not a bad idea if you think about it. Might even turn a profit, since Ben Hur is still leagues beyond most movies being made today.

one of the great movies and the music is just so wonderful thanks for sharing

This music is of an epic scale that even today, cannot be matched. Only a soundtrack like this could have given Ben Hur's epic story the musical force it deserved.

From 4:21-5:50 is some of the best score music I've ever heard.

I don'ty know why the scene where Ben-Hur, his mother & Tirzah drink to Simonedes' & Esther's happiness and safe return to Antioch (a still of which is on the original VHS & DVD covers) was deleted from the film. Is the actual scene available anywhere?

IMHO, this is the GREATEST film score ever. There was a time when I listened to it almost daily.
