@pappy15445 The studio version is from the 1979 album "Bombs Away Dream Babies" (with Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac). I think she does backing vocals for this song on the studio version. Also this song was covered by Nanci Griffith on her 2001 "Clock Without Hands" CD. I actually like her version a bit better than John Stewart's (as much as I hate to admit it)
John was a musical genius is so many ways. I had the pleasure of seeing him and meeting him many times in the 1970's and 80's. His shows were always experience. He transcended rock and folk with his own style that would mesmerize his audiences as a storyteller and incredible musician. This clip is a prime example of his stage presence. Only thing missing are the fabulous harmonies of Buffy Ford. Rock on forever John.; you are missed
@turquoiseeyes13579 Yes, you are totally correct & it is unfortunate that he was not better known but at least fans such as yourself, me, & many others discovered & can appreciate his true musical genius. There are a multitude of popular but not highly known artists such as he - I`m glad to have known his music & feel unfortunate for the others who never did.
I was there!! Sadly that night,John was being an arrogant preachy ratbag, banging on about landmines as though it was the Audiences fault they'd been planted.
Was this at McCabe's in Los Angeles? I saw him there once a long time ago. For those who never saw him on stage, pity. One of the best shows you could see...
Great post. I loved JS and his music. I think everyone who loved John hated Gold, just like John did. My favorite song is either the Queen of Hollywood High or July You're a Woman. But, they are all great. Miss you man. I hope you are at peace. John
I liked Gold when it came out. Still do. It brings back a time and place on the California coast that I treasure. It was not John's best work. But it was never a bad song.
My brother and I (along with my mate Noel) filmed this John Stewart gig with his permission. Video equipment was hastily pulled together for the date and our inexperience shows in some cheesy camera shots. Still, the sound was (and still is) great because we used a stereo pair of PZM microphones stuck to the walls. Noel and H were on the cameras and I did the live vision mix. It started my brother off on a 20 year career in video production so a great night all round! Bob.
John Stewart one of the most talented .RIP

Sadly, John Stewart died in January 2008. A lot of his music is around on CD and MP3 downloads and well worth seeking out.

I'mn not sure John "hated" Gold as much as he felt it ironic that song would be his claim to fame.
