@spiderwick1989: AIX does not run on intelbased machines, you may try it on an older macbook with a powerpc processor. But there is no guarantee that you get it installed.
One more thing, you said we [the viewers of this video] could send you a message, if they wanted to know more or see things run (in the CLI). Is it perhaps possible if you set it up as a public access shell host? I'm sure there's a F/OSS SSH server (i.e. OpenSSH) out there. Would be fun, right?
@eMGeeGFX hmm that would be cool until someone figured out an exploit with the primitive software of the OS and got to the other machines under my firewall. That would be nice I suppose, but it would take a long while getting it setup in an even relatively secure manner.
@macheads101, why not set it up outside of the firewall then? You could also put it into a seperate subnet, with the rest of the machines in the network having that one in the hosts.deny list. I don't see the problem.
I forgot ti ask, how the hell did this end up in your basement? Because if it had been there for a while (when it was still worth a lot more), then it's a bit of a strange story.
Better known as... desktop. Built like a tank, yes, probably not in China either. By the way, localhost means there's no hostname configured. Also, the root directory being at ... the root is how UNIX originally was structured, it's since Linux (and some *BSD) that they had to differ from the POSIX and other set UNIX standards.
Likening AIX to Ubuntu is well... let' say, just wrong. LOL.
i have a IBM POWER IntelliStation 285... Power5+ 1.9GHz dualcore 36MB cache, 12GB of RAM and 4x73GB SCSI... and it runs AIX 6.1... and its pretty FAST :) gotta love AIX.. i have Gnome 2.14 installed from bullware.
@ilukeberry nice system! I have a POWER4 system (IBM 9114-275), but it's dead at the moment (due to some internal media bay problems; IBM had to use a retarded custom power cable).
Thanks for video review. Motif (the window toolkit used by CDE) isn't that unusual.. there's an open source clone of it called lesstif, used by window managers like MWM and FVWM. Of course, Motif used to be the standard X GUI toolkit. CDE is still the default GUI on AIX and HPUX, but their phasing it out of Solaris :P
@mekanopsis1 don't forget about [Open]VMS, it uses CDE too (although called DECwindows). I'm very much in favour of CDE, as it's damn fast and the binaries tend to usually be nice and small!
Nice! I too use an IBM Model M keyboard. They rock!
I still want an RS6000 (or even an AS400). We used to use the RS6000's at CompUSA to serve our terminals & registers: no one even knew they were there as they kept running & running for years.
The numbers are probably (like on most IBMs) the number referencing the POST code it is in the process of testing.
A friend of mine just installed a browser (Firefox I think) on his RS6000.
Sweet machines! Lemme know if you ever wanna get rid of it!
@gammaray850 Actually Xcode is a native RuneScape client for Lawn Gnome and JDE (basically any Windows computer), that supports OpenLOL, and 4D timestamping via NSAPI version 2.0 as of I quadruple E spec (IEEEE 801.337a) You can read more about it at your local acme in the tech support section.
These days I use the Apple platform for all my development needs, however, I was introduced to the UNIX operating system on an AT&T 3b1. Check it out...
Yeah It was configured to run all the apps on X. Luckily they were also on the local machine. I just edited the config file so that the X server is localhost, now everything works fine. And I am not sure that IBM still sells AIX tapes but they must still sell CD-ROMS, but I already have a CD-ROM that came with it.
The key part is nothing new, there's a few servers that require you to turn a key to start them up. That particular login screen is the same on all UNIX flavours of the era - it's called the CDE login, kinda like gdm to GNOME, or kdm to KDE.
Yep, i know... IN my old gerneration (where we say things like we were young once too you know) we worry about you young people not knowing about Vinyl, or having experience an E-Ticket... (My Generation coming to grips that we have passed our youth to our middle age)
CD drive... It's not that old... Talk to me when we look at 5 1/4 floppies with the OS on them... (I started even before that, but on those computers you probably wouldn't find in a basement, and of course Apple only started with a 5 1/4)
How old are you? I'm 13 and have the same interests as you but my voice is lower xD

I remember that GUI from Solaris 8. What do you know IBM uses it too. Sad that Sun Microsystems was bought out though but at least IBM continues.

You could probably get a CD-ROM or tape with AIX on it, and get the rest of the applications to run off the hard drive.
Being AIX, it can run applications remotely via X.
Yeah, anything is better than MS Vista.
