There's simply no doubt about it - it's a 100% incorrect call whether you think his arm was moving forward or not. In either case, it's an incomplete pass. Refs gave the Steelers 7 points. Nothing to debate here.

@thejoamiq If his arm is not going forward and still bringing it back (as you say) then it is a fumble. First, the passer must be in a forward motion in order for he tuck rule to be in effect. . Secondly, the flight of the ball landed behind the passer, therefor constitutes a backward pass or lateral. Finally, the play was "confirmed" by the replay official which means that they have the eveidence to uphold the ruling. Nothing was "given" here, just a well earned defensive play. Good call.

Also, if the player has tucked the ball into his body and then loses possession, it is a fumble.

Notice the first sentence where it says "any intentional FORWARD movement."Good call!

Also, I am doing my best to explain that a FORWARD pass, by definition, MUST BEGIN WITH a FOWARD arm motion. You said his arm is going BACKWARDS, therefor it is not yet a FORWARD pass, by definition.

However, the action that it directly applies to is bringing the ball back. That is exactly what the rulebook says. I know it seems counterintuitive - I frankly think it's a dumb rule. But the whole point of the tuck rule is that officially it's still considered a forward pass even if the QB loses it when he's bringing his arm back.

@thejoamiq But the difference now, as compaired to the NE/Oakland Playoff game, is that the flight of the ball went backwards here, whereas it went forward in the playoff game. Thus, the tuck rule is not applied due to the ball's flight, going back to my first staement. It was ruled incomplete in the NE/Oak. game because the flight of the ball went towards the opponent's endline instead of this play, where the flight of the ball went parallel and even towards the Jets endline, a backward pass.

I have read the rule and it states, repeatedly, the passer must be motioning the ball FOWARD. In the video, when Sanchez is hit, his arm is going backwards (not forwards or in a forward TUCKING motion). Regardless, for it to be incomplete, it must first be a forward pass by defintion.

That is why the rule is so controversial - you actually DON'T have to be attempting a forward pass when the ball is knocked out for it to be called a forward pass. @thejoamiq And you fail to understand that the the arm motion is only a part of the definition of a forward pass. The flight of the ball, upon release, must be toward the opponent's endline. Here it is not. The flight still needs to go forward, this why it isn't an incomplete pass here because, by definition, it does not fulfill all the requirements, tuck rule or not. Tuck rule applies to the impetus of the flight but it must still go forward to become an incomplete pass.
