I never bought a spore kit, here is what I did instead. Every time I go hunting morels I would bring them home and soak them in plain water. I have a place in my yard, where I cut down two mulberry trees, and I poured the water all around that area. After four years passed, I had morels, last year I got 11 from the spot I poured the water. This year I got 5 so far but there is still time. I hope to find more.
i wouldnt waste my time buying this product.if you could grow morels successfully they would be worth so much money.first you have to have a mycelium.
Well, I think most of the comments are great, some are... a little off topic. But I tried my best! Planted in late 2006, I gave this morel spawn experiment 3 seasons, and nothin'. the kit cost aobut $40 so no huge loss, really. And I learned some stuff. Mostly, that while I can grow flowers well, growing edibles is not my thing!
i like to find my shrooms naturally it's just a thrill seeing that little yellow or grey mushroom poking out of the leaves that's why i've been looking for mushrooms every spring since i was 3 years old.
You guys are fucking stupid.. HIV isn't a parasite.. it doesn't start out a parasite.. it's a virus.. viruses and parasites are two different things..
what...the chances of getting hiv from escargot is nearly impossible...the only way you could get it is if it wasnt cooked...and you dont get it from the snails you get if from the fluke which has parisitized and modified the snails viral gene receptance
exactly. So why even eat something that has the risk of carrying the parasite that causes HIV? Just don't eat escargot or you will regret it later, trust me.
@hydrobot2003 for one your retarded. HIV is a virus. not a parasite. you can get rid of a parasite and you cant get rid of a virus. a virus goes from host to host to survive. it needs blood to live. not a mushroom. stop posting shit you know nothing about.
how about psilocybin spores i hear you extract that from plants? not actual mushrooms so i dont get why people say shrooms grow on shit im sure cows dont shit out magic shit for the magic shrooms to grow
you need to do a loooot more research buddy.. what happens is spores(basically mushroom eggs) are eaten when the cow eats grass. these eggs are tough so they can survive gestation, after that, the cow craps, and once the crap gets old and hard, the mushrooms spring up out of it and eat it.. mushrooms=decomposers.. i have found a bunch of psilocybe cubensis around the cowfields at my house
Yep, it's spawn alright: The Giant Morel Mushroom Patch™
Cloned from some of the largest Morels (Morchella angusticeps) ever found, we provide pure culture spawn of this most popular of spring mushrooms. A mushroom bed is prepared outdoors and with some luck, time and favorable spring weather, a secret Morel patch can be protected within the privacy of your backyard. (Note: this Patch may take as long as two years to produce its first crop).
Well as you may have been told multiple times, that is not a spore kit. It is a spawn kit, which means that you have active mycelium growing on a substrate. Spores are microscopic, and sold either as a spore print, or in a syringe with liquid solution.
Are you sure it is a spore kit? Usually they are mycelium growing on a substrate such as rye or sawdust. The orange color is sclerotia, which is hardened mycelium, and is the precursor to an actual mushroom. The amount of spores needed to fill a gallon bag would be astronomical, and not feasible, even with mushrooms that have a very high spore count, like Hypsizygus ulmarius. Also, with multispore inoculations, there is a lot of variation, and the mycelium might not fruit.
You seem pretty learned on this subject. Besides doing this as a hobby is it worth it? And would it help if some dog *hit or horse manure were added to the mixture? Thanks...
Morels are not really a good idea for commercial production. A lot of money can be made with oyster production, but the start up costs are high. Any manure wouldn't help because morels don't decompose manure; each mushroom lives on a different substance.
the hell with kits, Gather and grow your own culture and transfer to substrate. You learn more and its fun. The resources are easily and readily available . Take notes when you find them, you may realize that you dont need a goofy fence for your invisible boundaries, and the middle of a lawn isnt the greatest location for morchellas
how much did that kit cost? and why was the logs needed on top? and does it require a certain kind of burned ash mixed in or any wood ash? and does it require a certain kind of burned logs on top of site? like elm?
I think you're supposed to use elm wood, preferably. Do a google search for "Morel Habitats" and the first hit should be for a site called "Northern Country Morels" that goes into detail about the various types of trees morels are usually found growing near... the only dead ones they mention are elm trees.
This is pretty cool I would like to make one myself but how much of each of the 'ingredients' do you use? Also I just have to say ZUZU's inspector check...hilarious lol
Mclaughlin, when you get a spore kit, they come with very detailed instructions. I believe I used about a gallon each of sand, topsoil, gypsum board, and peat moss, all mixed in with the gallon worth of spore kit mixture.
they say that mushrooms may begin to fruit from the habitat their first spring, although it's not entirely likely. the mycelium, the underground base, needs to become established.
Space, they're still growing. I planted the bed October 2007 and they're still 'cooking' underground. These videos show the steps to construct a morel bed.
Just go an pick um for free ... lazy idot !

Have you thought of the concept that the spore MIGHT land in the dung AFTER the cow crapped it out???

You ever cooked a batch of morels with escargot? Both take well to herbs and flavored butter.
