One of the best songs ever written. Anyone who's ever been deeply in love would understand. Merle Haggard does it justice as well as Foster & Allen. Does ANYONE know how to purchase a DVD of Foster & Allen that can be played on a DVD in USA? USA requires "Region 1" formatting. I've returned so many DVDs because they did not play on my DVD. Would appreciate anyone's help. Thanks. LOVE Foster & Allen.
This song makes me cry almost every time I play it... I looked after my dad for 9 years after he got so sick he couldn't live without an oxygen hose stuck in his nose to be able to breath.
The line where he says it breaks my heart to leave you behind my Dad said to me an hour or so before he passed away. With not much more than a whisper he took my hand and said " I want to go, but I don't want to leave you behind."
Here's to Great Old Songs that leaves us with Memories!
@Kittielips - Thanks, This song will always make me cry, for every time I hear it it takes me back to the day he died, and being at his side constantly makes the memory as fresh as if it were yesterday in my heart. It is a wonderful feeling to know he loved me that much, but also very sad knowing that he was ready to leave this world and some of his last thoughts were worrying about me.
Cheers to the love a parent has for their children, even when we constantly messed up!
Some 'wounds' never heal; but they will always 'walk beside you.' They cannot be erased. You can't change the past; nobody can......Just remember this; we've all 'messed up' at some point or another; nobody's perfect, and you've already shown you have a caring nature.
@tunenut122 - As long as your heart has changed that is all that matters! The way I see it is, even though you weren't good to yours, and wish you could change it - be nice to someone else that no one else gives a damn about.
I always say there are old folks out there that their kids don't bother with, and to them when they reach their last stage in life may feel their life was all for naught, nobody appreciated them. Let some poor soul out there know someone appreciates who they are.
My Mum & Dad have listened to Foster and Allen for years, This reminds me of them. They are both still alive, but it saddens me that this kind of music is a dying breed. So it is with tears I write this even more so after reading "merbenzgill's" comment.
I never heard it before, but I'm proud to say my eyes got wet like those of RENAULTDRIVER even though the song had no relation to him. I rather thought of the hardships the good and brave Irish people had to endure to keep from dying and those hardships had been common to us, Italians, when, back in the last part of the 19th century, hundreds of thousands had to leave to just keep on living. And if they had a love all they were praying for was "Be nobody's darling, but mine".
my dad sang this song to me as a boy when my mother left us for another and left me with my dad that raised me , i still play this song on my piano and cry and im 76 now
The version with Emmylou and the Chieftains is easily the best version I have heard of this song! I don't know why it's been removed, but it's a real shame. I check for it to re-surface from time to time, but no luck so far...
My Little Dahlin is no longer with me. 40 years of joy we shared, only to be parted by death

@TheDoughead Excellent idea. Thank you. Still too bad thing can't be changed.
If I saw a lodge somehow (not too swift at this) looked beautiful. Went to Canada
fishing a long time ago with my father-in law. Had a hell of a time. The guide always
had his pole in first as I remember. We all laughed about it. Have a good day. I love You Tube. There are so many "good" songs here.
