In guess it is the potassium 40 in the rock. I have some potassium aluminium sulfate and potassium iodide.

Yes, I imagine that is it. I have heard that bananas can actually give a reading on very sensitive meters because of the potassium.

I guess that's possible. The number of disintegrations is probably a few thousand per second. For the human body, I read it is 4500 des/s

It was a gift- my brother gave it to me a while back. I believe he got it on Ebay.

Ya know you can get a reading off of kitty-litter.

Yes- and some ice melter uses potassium chloride also which will result in a reading.
