I fully appreciate the difficulty of this movement's middle section, but why the gigantic gaps between phrases?

I do not see the gaps between phrases as you stated. You were none descriptive of the where about of the gaps. I would of notice if such occured but everything was on the right beat. So for future reference please read over what you are about to type and study the video before posting remarks on videos. This shows that you feel musically challenged by this performance.

If you're talking about on the 2nd page, I think that's just interpretational... good idea to pause slightly, actually, as it get's a bit much after a while if the performer just spews out a tumult of notes without a breath.
