EXCELLENT!!! She handles that difficult ascending phrase at 2:23 EXTREMELY WELL...that's the test I give any soprano who attempts this dramatic aria. Her top is free and rings out without smoky mirrors, hocus-pocus, lucky rabbits' feet or anything of the sort. Deb is in top form here. Raise your right hand for the benediction, and let the people all say: A-MEN!!!!
I've heard this solo done several times by students during Met Opera regional auditions. No one sent a chill down my spine like she does here. I'm trying to find more posts of her singing after surgery, to try to compare if there's a major difference in the voice.
She's better... There's a 60 minutes episode of her after surgery on here that shows here singing the love duet from Tristan und Isolde with Ben Heppner that is out of this world!
I have heard her before and after. I think she has lost something. It's not about cutting through the diaphragm, but rather that she doesn't seem to have as much energy. Also, when breathing low one has something against which to push against with the weight.
Freni, von Stade, nor Scotto were never as big as Deborah Voigt. Voigt lost the equivalent of a small adult. Additionally, Pavarotti, with his ups and down suffered similar loss of breath control. What we are talking about is obesity vs. a little overweight...
I haven't heard her since the surgery - but I will later this year. I used to love to say that you knew the show was over when she sang. Has she really lost a lot of weight? I guess I won't be able to say that any more. Well, all the more power to her, especially if she can still sing like this. She sends chills down my spine.
I saw her about a year ago in LA Opera House Recital. She blew us away! The audience cheered for 20 minuntes. She sang great and she looked great! REally great...seriously....!~
I heard her at the Met a couple of years ago just as the news came out about her surgery. I don't know, time will tell. I felt she held back a bit that night. I do think the volume of sound has diminished a great deal, but she is still very, very good. You know; you damn if you do and damned if you don't. . .
She sounds quite good here, and the voice sounds much richer and bigger than now. Has anyone here heard her pre and post surgery? I'd be curios to know if her voice has lost volume afterwards.
I always get chills i thought I was crazy cause i get tears cause it!s so beautiful. This woman not only has the most beautiful voice.BUT,the most beautiful eyes
I just adore when true dramatic soprano tackle spinto rep. Such a solid wall of sound up and down that register; I'd never heard her sing this, and was delighted with the post. Thanks a million!
Maybe it is just normal aging too, not the slimming. You know one has to get slimmer also to be in good health, cause after many years of overweight, your heart is very tired, your back and knees too, etc. She wanted to find a way out for years, even before the London incident.
I would have to disagree. By slimming down the body or gaining weight, you inevitably change the way your body supports the sound. A drastic move either way can have disastrous effects. The fact that the surgery she underwent CUTS THROUGH the diaphragm is a big reason for the learning curve she's still undergoing to adjust. I hope her voice will return to its original state... we'll see.
Bariatric surgery does NOT cut through diaphragm nor any other surgical procedure except for cancer resection and that is only in isolated cases. Surgeons sometimes need to open both cavities, ie, thoraco and abdominal but never go into one side through the other by opening up the diaphragm.
I'm sorry, I normally don't bad mouth singers. But, dude, she does not sound this beautiful. People were raving about her 5 years ago, but at her Egyptian Helena she didn't sound good. All the body is gone. She sounds so dog gone good here it just makes me so sad. I mean she is RIPPING IT UP!. GREAT POST
Q. What new pretty-girl roles do you want to tackle with your new body? A. I really want to do ``La Fanciulla del West.'' I want to do a lot more Salomes and Toscas. Also Manon Lescaut. Brunnhilde is coming down the pipeline, not that she's necessarily a pretty girl, but I'll be able to wield that spear a lot more easily.
i liked her better when she was heavier...the voice was nicer to listen to
