Flash hiders aren't designed to hide the muzzle flash, they are primarily designed to direct the expanding gas from the bullet upward to decrease upward recoil. In the case of the M82 Barret, the gasses are blown to the sides, pushing the rifle forward slightly, because I'm sure anyone who has fired a Barret can tell you they'd prefer to not get dominated by the backward recoil than to have less upward recoil.

Flash hiders are ment to hide the muzzle flash! Why else call them "FLASH HIDERS" the key word is HIDERS!!! They direct the flash to the side instead of making a cone of fire

There is another thing used on heavy guns is the Muzzle Break! And that one is used to reduce the recoil by expanding the time that the gases normally take to exit the barrel

@MrSniper16 A flash hider hides the flash of the rifle when being fired. A muzzle brake redirects the gas perpendicular to the barrel to counter-act the rocket effect and reduce recoil. Each do their separate things and should not be mistaken for one another. Now there are things called moderators and compensators, but explaining that will take up more text than i'm allowed to type here, if anyone wants to know along with anything else about firearms PM me :)
