~ HEY !! ME AND MY BF TRAINED OUR 3 BIRDS TO POOP ON COMMAND TOO, BUT ON THE GARBAGE (we have one in each room) !! SO YES IT'S POSSIBLE =) !!! My Quacker went by himself a few times =D !! Actually, we put them on the side of it, and it takes only a few seconds! WHEN to put them ?? Well it depends of your Bird, like his frequence to poop, what he ate, etc.
Mine can poop on command too, but that doesn't prevent them from pooping everywhere else if not constantly watched. My first bird was easy to train to the bathroom and to a paper bag by my chair until I got a second pet. Then when I got another bird she went back to being wild until she got ready to have eggs. She then wouldn't poop in her cage at all and immediately dropped a large load when outside the cage and the male took on the behavior too. Now I am starting over on constant watch.
The easiest way is to turn your bird upside down and grab him by the neck. Then firmly squeeze the bird whilst moving your fingers up towards the feet, kind of like a tube of toothpaste. This should ensure that all the excrement is expelled when YOU want it to be, reducing the chance of accidents. For better results try doing this under water.
@donnyrossi its not dangerous to potty train a parrot..... And everyone tries to get their parrots to do this, its part of being a housebroken pet. Housebroken pets live longer than they would in the wild, by almost twice the age.
@killbotfelwick I think the danger comment was meant for the dude who thinks his bird should be squeezed like a toothpaste tube. Horrible treatment of the bird!
I have just got an Indian Ringneck that seems to be terrified whenever anyone approached it's cage. He's about 6 months old. He will always rush to the opposite side of the cage, screeching if he sees you approaching. I've recently started letting him free to fly around the room to get used to us, he seems to like being on top of our large plasma TV. But he still flies up to the curtain rail if anyone approaches, and back down to the TV when you withdraw.
@joewaterlily tried the power pause? if not look it up, real simple and very effective, my budgie was the same, it took half an hour, and he was from a huge aviary (not young either) and had never been handled
@wataprincezauqaria i was gonna say the same thing. all it shows is that your bird poops on command. it doesnt tell you how to train it to potty where its supposed to.
I have read many articles on teaching your bird to be potty trained, but none of them every explained how to do it. Could you tell me how you taught your bird to do that?
like the video more or less when you think your bird has to go hold them over napkin and paraise them when they do the task and be consistant and patient if they mesaage up.
Yep, but my african grey's favoite thing to say is, "go poop." She even says it on cue on the telephone to anyone when I hold the phone up to her beak.

Any ideas how to curb this behaviour?

You could fast the bird, then hold food in your hand and eventually it'll get hungry enough to come and eat from your hand?
ZamaniSahib 2 years ago
@ZamaniSahib with some birds that might never work, and then they end up starved to death.
lforsdyke 2 years ago
@ZamaniSahib A bird can die quickly if you starve them. That is a stupid suggestion.

@kjsacramento I have since learned a great deal and my lil parakeet is doing just fine ^^.

drolebol 2 years ago
its okay if they make a few mistakes when potty training just be patient and consistant they will learn eventually .
rockybeach1 2 years ago
i lol'd wtf he shits on command? how is that possible ._.
Ninjaboyz128 2 years ago 5
you have to know when he ate last and what he ate and of course he has to poop so very possible you really have to know your bird well.
rockybeach1 2 years ago
lol most of the time my parakeet,(who we just found out is a guy lol) max flies into his cage and goes to the bathroom when he needs to
