These methods of teaching kanji are incredibly inefficient, usually American teachers rely on the Japanese way of learning the kanji to teach their students. It's a damn waste of time, they hope by pounding the kanji into your head you will eventually learn them, this does work somewhat, but it takes a hell of alot longer and you begin to lose the true meaning of the actual kanji.
