IN 1973 I WENT TO DISNEY WORLD AT THE AGE OF 7. RODE ALL THE RIDES AND THIS WAS THE BEST......I STILL TODAY CAN REMEMBER THE GIANT SQUID. I DREW PICTURES IN SCHOOL MADE MAPS OF THE LAGOON. WELL DISNEY LET ALL THAT GO TO HECK. JUST AS THE DISNEY CHANNEL. IT SUCKS NOTHING MAGIC NOW. WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR YOU SHOULD KEEPS THINGS AS THEY ARE..NOT CHANGE THEM. THIS RIDE WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! WHATS NEXT JUSTIN BEVERHEAD WILL BE ELVIS? THINK NOT !!!!!
I only went on this once when I was little but I remember it so well. It was the most incredible ride at Disney. My husband and I went on our honeymoon there in 2002 and i couldn't wait to find it! Little did I know they got rid of it :( A worker there did tell me it was because the upkeep was too expensive :/ !!! I was so disappointed! :(
Ah, yes. My favorite ride in all the parks in my child hood. Always had to ride it at least once when we went. Then one year it was closed down. Then many years later it was gone.....Fuck you Disney. Finding Nemo cannot replace this. It's like trying to change Disney's mascot to Chuckie Cheese and hoping noone will notice a massive gap in Disney's history is gone. Curse you Mike Eisner!! True I have no proof it's his fault but hey the man leaves soulless abominations in his wake.
They use to have 20,000 under the sea in both magic Kingdoms. But took them both out. But there is something like it. NEMO. It is pretty fun too! Hope i could help
Thank you for posting this! My Dad took me to see 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea when I was just a little boy (It was playing at an Air Force theater, we were military). Being from Florida, I was forever fascinated by the Nautilus ramming ships through the hull! The Disney ride was a totally cool re-creation and one of my favorites..ever. I always wanted to take one of their glass port-hole subs and pull up in the Gulf at Clearwater Beach Fl.....talk about a chick magnet!! Nemo has arrived.
It has been completed. They replaced this ride with a new version of the same type. It has a Finding Nemo theme and is very colorful and at times a little scary for younger children.
at least some of them werent sent to a dump. Two of the vehicles were saved from the fleet's demise and were shipped to besunk in the snorkeling lagoon at Castaway Cay, Disney's private island. Here, the two submarines were placed in various areas of the snorkeling lagoon and covered with cargo netting to help sealife cling to them. As of 2008, only one Nautilus submarine still exists, but both it's wheelhouse and dorsal fin have been destroyed by hurricane weather.
Does anybody know the REAL reason Disney closed this ride? I heard it was because it wasn't handicapped accessable. Whatever the reason, it was a truly bad & sad decision. What became of the submarines?
Basically, it was because of ridiculously high maintenance costs. Also, they let the ride cook in the Florida sun for about ten years and it got beyond repair.
And for all those disgruntled Disney fans, 20K (not the exact ride, or even ride system) may very likely be making a come back in animal kingdom on Mysterious Island; Basically there is talk of cloning the land from Tokyo seas over in animal Kingdom.
I saw a website that showed the submarines were sent to a Florida landfill and had all kinds of crap thrown in and around them. I believe it was 9 in total. They were idiots. I would have auctioned them off and say like, "Anyone want a piece of early Disney history?" In any case, I am ticked off like you that the ride is gone.
@FourFootFagott A landfill posses the remains of those wonderful ride subs, having been bulldozed to oblivian sadly. That ride was the very reason for me to go to disney world. I was just a kid then, but when i was last there ,it was the same year they first shut it down. I've not been back since. Thanks alot disney for killing a great ride.
So, you close down The Greatest Themepark Attraction Ever Made (TM), lie about its status for two years because you're too afraid to tell the truth, leave it sitting dormant for ten years, and then finally turn it into a f**king playground. Well done Disney.
It was sad to see kids playing on it obliviously when I was last there in 2007. If only they knew the hallowed ground they were on.
You took the words right out of my mouth and I feel the same way. I was there a few weeks ago, and thoguth to myself "if these little ones only knew...it only...."
I wrote a three page angry letter to WDW (Yes, I was probably drunk at the time) when they announced the final removal in 2004, to get a reply a week later more or less saying "We don't care anymore. Kindly f**k off."
Fair enough, I thought, but Walt Disney World today is not the Walt Disney World of my childhood.
@MayorVaughn: I think Walt would be spinning in his grave if he knew what the Disney 'shirts' had done to this fantastic attraction. Shame on you, corporate Disney, shame on you!
The lagoon space could be put to such better use instead of a pathetic child's playground, which appears like it was assembled in 20 minutes. The area behind the lagoon where the show building was located is huge! Disneyland, CA is constantly being refurbished with tons of money being spent. I'm sure the Disney company has enough money to give WDW's Fantasyland a well needed and deserved major attraction. Every time I visit WDW i feel like something is lacking in Fantasyland...it definately is!
I know. Now there's a nice large green wall surrounding the old lagoon...Oh, and don't forget about the Pooh Bear play area. That also takes up some space.
I came here a couple years after they closed this, but the lagoon was still there. I never got to ride it, but this still makes me sad.

I can't believe they took this ride off, for what reason?? It was shut down for years with no explanation!!
SpookyAbductee 1 year ago
@SpookyAbductee They closed it because they couldn't be bothered funding it anymore, and then tried to come up with the "reasons" to tell the public

This was THE ride!!!! oh the memories!

different times. I imagine disney had safety liability issues with the ride. I remembered back in 78 or whatever the rides had leaks and stuff.

How deep was the water in this attraction. I was only on it once when I was 2. It looks to be about 8 feet deep.

I have fond memories of riding the one at Disney World arround 1973. Took forever to load one ride as everyone had to crawl down the hatch.
I saw the smaller sub at Castaway Key. You can sort of see it in the middle of the lagoon on Google Earth.

Actually the cast member(not all of them)hated the maintenance needed on this ride so they sabotages it.
