Just to add to the mix here - I did the Majors way back in the 60's & can tell you standards have plummeted since then. Technique was paramount - no amount of papering over deficiencies with smiley dancey stuff would get a girl through those exams. Now Solo Seal, THAT was the culmination of all that work. Dumbing down isn't confined to the BBC in Britain. Doesn't anyone wonder why we have no British-born & trained primas since Bussell retired? The world of ballet has left us behind. Exams = ££
i much prefer this new syllabus to the old syllabus, i have studied both, and even thought the new syllabus may be harder, it is much more enjoyable to dance, each exercise is like a mini dance, compared to the old sylabus, which was frankly boring to perform..
@GymCC I agree, I've done both of them aswell and the first one was quite obviously the easier one. At first it's kind of annoying doing the second syllabus because the excersises are much more longer, but when you get used to it it's so much fun :)
I totally agree with Balletgirl!Ballet is an art that combines music, movement and the theatre. A dancer with strong technique and poor musicality leaves the spectator with a void feeling...
i agree that the new Intermediate stuff seems a lot like Ballet 6... but what's so wrong with emphasis on musicality??? i think every dancer should have a good sense of the music. what's the point of dancing with a song if you're not going to dance TO it?? musicality counts for at least 10 marks on ballet exams. so that's ten marks out the window if you can't feel the music. i've been playing the piano since i was 3, and i usually get 9's on my musicality. it definitely helps.
I don't agree...the pirouette exercises in the new Intermediate are much harder than the old ones!It They include double pirouettes en dehors and en dedans and dancing steps with emphasis on musicality. The level is much higher on the new Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate!!Maybe you should study the work first and then come to a conclusion.
The RAD seems to be putting much more emphasis on musicality! It seems like this exercise be in the graded exams, not a vocational exam. And technically the exercises seem quite a bit easier! What happened to the pirouettes from 5th!? I know these were taken out of the old intermediate but things like that should be left in - would make Advanced 1 SO much easier! Who agrees?
@BalletBoo95 totally agree. the difference between higher grades and int.found/intermediate is disappearing - I don´t think tihs is good. Emphasis on musicality is ok, but not despite solid technique!
@BalletBoo95 I go to the Royal academy of dance in London and we do Pirouettes from 5th in the intermediate class as well as from 3rd, more so in 5th actually. I find the course equally easy/difficult to my experience of the old one. I think it depends on how you are taught and who by. Sometimes the teachers stray off the curriculum so to build technique, hence how we’re doing pirouettes from 5th .
Yes, we also do pirouettes from 5th. I have never done them from 3rd, infact I have never seen 3rd used once the students are old enough to hold their 5th. But I would love to know about pirouettes from 3rd? are they easier/more difficult than from 5th? But it is not examined, and of course my classes also contain exercises other than those set by the board. I appreciate your opinion, I still think it easier and will be interested to see how the candidates for this exam are marked.
wonderful!! ;) i bet i cant lift up my feet so high above!! need to do a lot exercise though... its just so difficult to lift up one feet in the air for so long, esp when u hv to turn from the front to the side!! @ManyaDancer, do u have some kind of exercises for lifting up the feet to a higher point with a swifter movement? thanks ;D
This is such a hard exercise to count, so I don't! haha. I tell the girls to feel and listen to the music. It's hard for them. Very nice ManyaDancer :)
VERY NICE!!! personally i find the new syllabus very musically demmanding for students!!! you cant count it which will throw many people, you really have to be quite musicall!!
