  • Aikido.... COMPETITION? How lame.

  • @aherrns

I bet these lame guys you are referring to could kick your ass.

  • @nappyheaded Yes, perhaps. And I bet you and I are going to die someday, but who gives a damn?

  • eso no es kotegaeshi...

  • i hope i can apply aikido moves in my silat

  • Nappy, do you post on Bullshido!? BTW, I'm an MMA guy and I'd love to train in Tomiki style someday!

  • Aikido is absolutely not just counters and distractions. Although it may not be considered "aikido-like" in the philosophy aspect of the art but u absolutely can be offensive with its techniques and attack.

  • Amazing how many Aikikai guys are "offended" by ANY other style of Aikido other than there own.

I personally train Yoshinkan Aikido and I have a great respect and appreciation for the Tomiki guys in these videos. BTW, that Kote Gaeshi looks like it would work.

  • looks like it would work? It did work you saw it.

  • Good realistic Aikido, not that dancing crap.

  • Good shit. Gozo Shioda forever

  • Finally, an Aikido tournament! An Aikido system that actually works! Aikidoka that don't fly around by themselves! THIS is a martial art! Aikikai and the rest is ballet!

  • true true

  • Looks more like a dumbed down version of a Judo tournament.

    No offence.

  • That's too much of a generalization. The dojo I attend is Aikikai affiliated but is as martial as any.

  • How can you be "martial" if you never fight?

  • The two people in the video aren't fighting, and neither do people in almost any dojo you'll watch. They're just training with intensity; if they were really fighting one of them would have been injured or killed. Jiyu-waza and realistic resistance is what our dojo uses to test our technique.

  • hmm, apparently you take martial arts for the wrong reason. The whole point of the philosophy of martial arts is for self discipline, ability to defend yourself and others, as well as physical fitness. The reason why we in traditional aikido and aikikai do not compete is due to it being purely defensive and aikido being the way of peace. Showing off at a competition to show u are the best and win money would violate the definition of the art. Ive stopped teaching a few people for such reasons.

  • If i have an encounter in real life, id rather the attacker not know my name, my history, or my ability. By becoming publically known, your just getting rid of your element of suprise and no art blocks bullets period which is what a real threat would result too if they felt they'd lose a close quarters encounter.

  • I agree with the philosophy but... I train Shotokan Karate myself and neither our sensei nor my mates compete in tournaments. There are many masters who left sports kumite despite having perfect fight records. But they all said it was a good experience. My point being - practicing with your comrade in the dojo is one thing, fighting against a resisting opponent (who wants to defeat you!) is different - and closer to real fighting.

  • ya, if one was to compete in actual aikido rather than a hybrid art, it would have to be mixed or else the 2 aikido practitioners would just stare at each other. I dont mind competition that much. I dont agree with it but if they were to do it i dont think there should be all the pauses, point systems, and limitations. To me that means the "best" isnt really the best because noone gets to utilize everything in their arsenal due to certain things being illegal. So competition just seems too fake.

  • Limited competition is better than NO competition. Even MMA has rules so you can't really complain about it.

  • @Hotora86

I'm not convinced. It's part of the uke role (we prefer aite) to make good attacks and try to be closer to a real situation during the practice (depends on the experience of tori too). If you really want competition to approach the reality, you don't need any title nor medals nor podiums. They just corrupt the art, I think. Advertising, money, ... Just look at judo competitions : we french had many doping scandal during tournaments. Where is the judo code of honour in that ?

  • I'm not really following your logic on this and I have to agree that limited comp is better than no comp, otherwise you never have a true measure of your ability and the last place you want to find out if "it works" is in the street.

  • @Hotora86 A sport that is the real deal? Don't think so Moonbeam.

  • @harrylimewirejr moonwhat...?

  • uggly and comic! That's aaall I have to say.

    That's not Aikido.

  • for me... this is not aikido...

  • Dude, Aikido is about resolving conflict, not creating it, competition would therefore be going against the principals of aikido, and yojimboloe is right, aikido is an art and a way of life so cut the crud why don't you go to a dojo and get your butt kicked by a 9th kyu, aikido does work!

  • this is exactly why people laugh when people like you say they can kick someone's ass.

  • I'd like to see a person LIKE YOU try to kick one's butt

  • I'm sorry but I wasn't the one who was saying a system not developed for fighting could be used in a fight.

  • In the end that IS what aikido is: another style of fighting, it is just another martial art, just different philosophical views on how to deal with aggressors and some other things as well.

  • this comment is acceptable.

  • aiki does work. 90% of fights end in grapples anyway. aiki also works as a sport and does have competion. some of it isnt that effective, some of it is very effective. also is an art. any shitbag can punch someone in the face.

  • ATTN 12 yr olds & arm-chair black belts: Learn the difference between a martial art and a system of fighting.

  • Gay as hell. This crap doesnt work in real life.

  • This is a competitive sporting match.

  • yes it is.

  • Aikido is universally bad regardless of organisation but these guys are trying to fight I guess.

  • Come on give these guys more credit.

  • Aikido is some gay stuff.

  • I bet these guys could throw you all over the place. Do you at least do an art that doesn't participate in stand up crappling?

  • What are you trying to say? Aikido is fucking gay. Why waste your time on this queer shit when you can train BJJ and Wrestling? G A Y.

  • BJJ is notrorious for it's stand up crapling. Watching two BJJers try to wrestle with each other standing up is a disgusting site to see. You guys can't throw someone worth a shit. You say this is gay when you roll on the ground like a faggot. That's really hilarious.

  • Yeah, wrestlers have bad takedowns too  . How many Aikido champions have there been in MMA? Shit how many Aikido fighters have ever won a fight in MMA/NHB? 0? Yup. Your shit sucks and doesn't work against a real fighter. Judo, sombo, bjj and wrestling work. Aikido is for anime watching, pony tail wearing nerd.

Stephen Segal called, he want's his pony tail (and gut) back.

  • I bet you these guys have experience in Judo too. Many Aikidoka have told me that they have sucessful did stuff to Judo and BJJ guys while they are sparring. Don't these guys have short hair?

  • Listen.. aikido doesn't have champions ok? there are aikido masters, not aikido champions. aikido doesn't have competitions because it is more spiritual than just a fight and also there's no attackin stuff but defence without using strenght except for the attacker's one. aiki jutsu is different and has attackin moves, not aikido. so all you people talkin shit about aikido why don't you ask an aikido master to show you some stuff on your own body? then let me know if aikido is useless

  • Learn your history mate judo and aikido come from the same place they are sisters they share the same blood. Many an aikido technique is the same as a judo one just done in an aikido way with distance in mind. It always strikes me as odd when people slag off aiki but praise judo considering that when kano saw ueshibas aikido he said this is great judo. Kano would send his top students to train with ueshiba. Why would a man like kano send his best stedents to study this useless aikido.

  • Yeah u were but w/e.

  • When?

  • u kno i was just tryin 2 piss u off 4 insultig osensei right, nothin against tomiki

  • insulting O-sensei?

  • Ki-Aikido is the best!, this is crap.

  • Many peoples negative opinions on Aikido are based on the Ki society. You can't throw somebody by Ki blasting them.

  • Okay I was being nice to even though you're a delusioinal larper. Ki Aikido is nothing more than a dance compared to a martial art that actively spars and competes such as Tomiki Aikido. Have fun dancing in your dojo instead of doing a real martial art. What dojo do you go to again? I'll keep it in mind if I'm in the area.

  • 1st and you

  • not enough to comment on.

  • Shin SHin Toitsu Aikido the style founded by Koichi Tohei 10th Dan first 10th dan ever actually.

  • yeah yeah I know what that stuff is already. I'm guessing you're a 1st or 2nd dan right?

  • Ha,now i know why Tomiki Aikido is not formally recognized by the other Aikido orgs, its not even real Aikido.

  • What style do you practice?

  • unless the guy doing it knows what's doin..

i think it was pretty good!

  • Too much contacts, I think that Aikido and here Goetegashi should be done with more movements and using his oponent's energy...With someone stronger he will not be able to do this technique without using the space around him

  • Tomiki people dont do the whole darlik attack we are thinking ukes we dont send you a text first then come running in with no control. When an uke knows what hes doing the job becomes harder. When uke knows how to go from hard to soft and stop everything it becomes like a game of chess. Its not easy to deal with an uke that gives you nothing. If you can deal with a static uke then anything else is no problem. People should never niech themselves in like the aikikai do. try it some time.
