I used to read the SWORD back in the day...Never could figure out why they spoke out against Calvinism, yet often printed Spurgeon sermons...
Heve they been editing them too?

agreed. I was misled for years because of the church I WAS IN, they were good people but when I gave my testimony, as was required after a claim of conversion, I said, 'I felt like I didnt have a choice." that was irrresistable grace! But even though they believed in the teachings of Spurgeon they would edit out the doctrine of election from his sermons. I'm talking in particular about "The Sword of The Lord," a news paper type thing that was very reveared and handed out at the my church.

right. agreed. we want to think that we have some control and/or a spark of good in us that causes us to seek God. If that were true we wouldn't need him. Unfortunately those who understand election are accused of being proud and thinking we're special but as Paul said in me there is no good thing. true humbleness comes from realizing that we are completely unworthy.

He has foreknowledge BECAUSE He predestined it, but this verse isn't using it as "knew ABOUT before". It could be said "fore-loved". It is used in sort of the same sense as when God told Israel "you only have I known" Amos 3:2. Of course God knew about other nations, but He was referring to a special love for them or intimacy with them. Gen 4 "Adam knew Eve...and she conceived". Same kind of know; his knowledge didn't cause her to conceive. Used here not as knowledge of, but as love or intimacy.

I typically compare the term "foreknew" from Rom 8:28 with 1Peter 1:20: "[Christ] was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you. . ."
"Foreknown" can be also translated as "foreordained" (it is in some translations). So, just as God foreordained Christ to come and bear the sins of many, He also foreordained a people to be predestined to conform into the image of Christ (Rom 8:28-9). The same word in the Greek is used in both texts.

@dawgbear06 your description of it being possibly "fore-loved" is closer than you think, and is perhaps the closest definition that is at the heart of the greek term. the idea behind the word is that it speaks of God knowing (intimately as a man knows his wife). God so knew us, because he elected us before the foundation of the world. as David puts it so beautifully in Psalms, before I was made thou knew me. Before the Potter made us, he foreknew what he was making-his people :)
