Matt's definitely one of my favorite lyricists. He strikes this perfect balance between humor, pathos and sadness as well as the literal and abstract - like you can empathize with him without fully comprehending what he means. It's just enough that you get the sense of the meaning. The strongest feelings are the hardest to put into words.

And a birthday candle is such a genius metaphor for us lanky, awkward, sweaty white guys.

Great song, the first The National song i ever heard was "Mistaken for Strangers' and while catchy, i didn't find it particularly deep or meaningful (lyric-wise), I think this song probably better represents them...not sure ;-)

U2 is my all time favorite band though :-( But The National are amazing and definately one of the very best. Unfortunately they will never be close to the biggest band in the world. We can love their music all we want but it's easy to see why they will never be mainstream popular. The Mainstream and the jackasses who run mainstream music don't give two shits about honest, heartfelt, legit, sincere, meaningful music. This has got to be the worst era in the history of mainstreme music.
