They REALLY wanted to show off the capabilities of the 3DO and a CD in general! This must have been massive for home consoles! The visuals and realism for the time is astounding! Now wonder it was so expensive!
@Ketorulz Yeah it's probably safe to say this was the most graphically advanced racing game of the time. I wonder how big the budget was on this game at the time compared to other games of the time. They did put their best into this one to really sell the 3DO no doubt.
That's a cool shirt! :) I have this game for the PC. The one thing I'm sad about is that this is the Need for Speed most people missed out on who got into the series on or after "Need for Speed: Underground." This game represents what the series was like before most of the illegal street racing and stuff like that. The whole Road and Track thing got me into the magazine, so it was a win-win to play this game. Anyhow, great video!
Holy shit, this brings back memories. When I was little my parents friends had a son who was in high school when I was in elementary school. I thought he was soooo cool cause he was older than me. He had a 3DO and we would always play road rash 3d and a bunch of other games. the mid 90's had sooo many fucking systems and the full motion video craze was in full force.that begining scene was full of badass cars, testarossa's, rx7, diablo, viper, 911,
Also, It had some of the best CD based quality video clips of any CD game. They look pretty good, even today. Yes, the burns don't need special hardware, although I have had mixed luck with media and burners. Burner in my wife's older PC seems to be more reliable for 3DO burns than the one in my PC.
It looks so weird to see all the real life video in those early CD games. Even the cockpit looks like a photo they took of the actual thing rather than something made on a computer.
When NFS was released it was basically Test Drive 4 (not a bad thing) but I'm not sure if the same people made NFS that made Test Drive.
Funnily enough, both NFS and Test Drive series went to the dogs.
If the rumours are true that Slightly Mad Studios (AKA Blimey Games AKA Simbin - (GTR2, GTL etc)) are making the next NFS game then it will certainly make a splash and hopefully return the series to the cutting edge - just like this original NFS.
I looked it up on Wikipedia and you're 100% right; this was the very first appearance of Need for Speed. Who would have thought such a popular franchise would have debuted on the 3D0? Go figure..
Not just debuted on 3DO, this was, probably, the best 'the need 4 speed' version ever. The gameplay half simulation/ half arcade is great, the full motion videos are awesome, the cars are amazing (go go go 512 TR =) and the game do what he should do: amuse you. A lot.
First put in a blank CD, Secondly load up your image or original CD, thirdly click the Burn button. Seriously it's that easy. There is no copy protection on the old 3DO system!
@MN12BIRD Hi there great video. Im also interested in burns how do you do them is it as simple as just having the machine and a blank cd or you need some external hardware?
@MN12BIRD wait, so the old front loading 3dos can play burned games? same way the dreamcast can? no mods, boot discs, or anything? if so im definitely getting one. i had a 3do a few years ago and i never looked into burning games
@kylemiller500 Lack of Quality control and high price. There are some good games on 3DO...but the majority of those were later ported to better consoles.
BTW, there is a nose cam view (in-car with HUD off) but it is only accessible with a button combo. The game does support analog control if you have the flightstick or the ultra rare driving wheel.
I remember a VERY rich neighbor got one of these consoles & this game for christmas when I was a kid, i was jealous as hell....he had 3DO and I had Genesis!! I was always at his house playing it and in shock of the graphics...he also had Road Rash on it and i went and bought it for Genesis, i was so disappointed! Thing is, he was playing my Genesis more than he was playing his 3DO! He wanted to play the 'popular' games....needless to say, he also had a SNK Neo-Geo that i played alot!
Now..is their a difference for burring games on systems such as the Dreamcast..i bet its more work because of the copy protection..yeah if you have a clue on that then tell me..
With DC there is protection but someone managed to get around it with a boot CD. Either download and burn the "Utopia" boot CD and then any game you download will run. Some images have this boot code built in so simply burn and play! These images will usually have "bootable" in the description. As for copying the games DC games are actually Gigabyte GDROM disks not standard (700MB) CDs. When images are made video or sound is either taken out or re-compressed to a lesser quality to fit.
The hard part is finding CDRs that work well. Older systems like this and the SegaCD are picky the laser isn't as good as new stuff. Most brands/materials of CDRs don't work. Also burn them at slower speeds. The slowest you can is usually best but some burners burn better at 8x than 4x for example. You may have to experiment or run Neros error tests on your CDs and Drive. But as for burning Nero is usually always recommended and the files out there are usually just ISO or Bin/Cue images.
Yeah man i have that game on my PC..The weird thing about it is that it only works on my old er Gateway PC..but not my newer Dell..but dosent really matter to me..and the title screans are alittle bit different on the PC version..but its the same great game...good review
Yes go back to supercars. EA owned the rights to use Ferrari and Porsche in video games for years (thats why GT has never had Ferrari until just now with GT5 and could only use RUF cars in previous GT games) But just imagine a new NFS game with more realistic driving and nothing but Ferrari, Lambo, R8, Veyron, CCX-R and all the new supercars that are out there! Instead we get Underground Neons and Foci! If I wanted to be a ricer and drive a Neon with lights on it I would... no forget that!
Come to think of it, if EA did that then the N4S franchise would be going up against the Gran Turismo & Project Gotham series but due to being most of the recent N4S games being pretty poor, that might not be the best idea.
Also the 3D0 had an even worse port of Doom, even worse than the SNES & 32X
The whole game looks digitized in visuals, like they reproduced real -life images into the game!

The INSIDE view, gives anyone the real feel of driving.
This game, itself, makes you get the driving REAL seriously. That's the huge difference between this game and todays...ones...
Besides, at any corner, at any time...cops are watching you, ready to stop you and through out you in jail!

@link093 Here here!
Although the new Need for Speed looks fantastic, it's called Hot Pursuit and is being made by Criterion, one of the best racing game devs imho.
Not bothering with a crappy CGI story or any of that crap, just pursuits like it should be.
