Ubuntu is perfect for old versions of Windows that Microsoft no longer accepts... such as Windows 2000 or Windows 98. I reformatted and installed on my old Mellinium Edition, finally a decent operating system!
I wouldn't fork out ANY money for ultimate..all it is really is just pro version with tons of language options...I speak one main language, English. why the fuck would need ultimate? and two even if I did need to buy Ultimate. I use Ubuntu as my primary OS and i have none of those problems - I'm also running a computer with Newer hardware. my Wifi works right out of the box. and so does suspend and hibernate Since it sounds like you had some problems you should boot a live CD session of lucid (AKA 10.04) and see if it changes your mind. granted you wont have #D productivity until you install drivers for your graphics card.

Note that e.g. the suspend/hibernate problems are always on the list to get fixed (for any release) yet fancy graphics and boot time is what is worked the hardest on, and what is cheered about. Suspend and wifi get lots of questions on the UF. So priorities are not rightly set imho. Btw I have run Lucid on a desktop and a laptop, on that desktop is was great but on that laptop... no.

Since linux doesn't have any proper help from the hardware manufacturers, these things will be hardest to fix/implement.

For those who are hating on Linux because of their love for gaming, you can always dualboot so you get the best of both. I prefer to use Ubuntu for most of my stuff, and have Windows on another partition if I feel like gaming.

I experienced this on my Machine. The Network card which is Windows specific works better on Ubuntu. Firefox works better on my Ubuntu. My 20% connection is working like a 50% or 70% connection. I don't need freeking games like Halo or Left 4 Dead on a PC. Consoles is the perfect alternative to Windows.

I'm running Linux Mint 7 right now. I'm about to reinstall Windows XP on my laptop because this OS is slow as shit. Right after installing it, it was already freezing and what not. Its flash is terrible too. I can't even watch anything on Youtube in fullscreen.

I generally like Windows and dislike Apple, but after having a netbook come with Ubuntu, I must say it's a cool operating system. And yes, entirely free. The package manager has let me get every program I'd want for this little netbook, but as a full desktop, it would be limiting. Still, for a 1.6 ghz processor and 1GB RAM, it seems very lightweight and runs fast. And no viruses, woot!
oh i should mention that them "cool" effects get really old fast, your not stairing at effects when you use your computer, you are focased on the application you are using, thats whats important
I do like it. But I hate the fact that the flash player is so terrible. Horrible colour palete, HQ and HD completely non-functional on YouTube, sound bar also non-functional. This is my biggest gripe right now next to not having a decent msn client.

Ubuntu is slower than Windows Vista.. it's supposed to be faster but it takes like 2 and a half mins to boot on my laptop with 1GB of RAM. Vista took 1 minute.
Uh, I have a netbook with 1GB RAM and a 1.6 ghz processor and Ubuntu takes like 20 seconds to boot up, if that. I would venture to say there is something corrupt with whatever copy of Ubuntu you had. I love Windows XP and have been using Ubuntu only a few weeks, but that boot time is ridiculous and not a fair measure of Ubuntu. I find it to be very fast.
is there any way to install drivers (when i find them, i hope) without internet? i have the 3 versions of ubuntu but i can't install the drivers, because to install them you need internet so you need a modem, the modem needs a driver. empty circle

I use Ubuntu as my primary OS and i have none of those problems - I'm also running a computer with Newer hardware. my Wifi works right out of the box. and so does suspend and hibernate Since it sounds like you had some problems you should boot a live CD session of lucid (AKA 10.04) and see if it changes your mind. granted you wont have #D productivity until you install drivers for your graphics card.

@Breathoffog I just mean the focus in this video is wrong because fancy spinning cubes don't make an OS better. Note that e.g. the suspend/hibernate problems are always on the list to get fixed (for any release) yet fancy graphics and boot time is what is worked the hardest on, and what is cheered about. Suspend and wifi get lots of questions on the UF. So priorities are not rightly set imho. Btw I have run Lucid on a desktop and a laptop, on that desktop is was great but on that laptop... no.

Since linux doesn't have any proper help from the hardware manufacturers, these things will be hardest to fix/implement.

Each program is available at no cost with source code making possible to modify or compile it to your needs. Every OS has a CLI (Yes Windows to)
Because the only way you ever can do extremely delicate tasks is by shortening it in command form.
You are not required to use it but it is advised.
For example if I want to run a backup everyday at 12pm excluding the home partition and making sure I get a mail when it completes and a error log when it fails it would either cost me 1 line in the CLI or a heck of processor power for a gui not to mention time a program and space
And this is a simple task.

You probably dont need it anyway because most viruses are designed for windows. And the reason its free is because its open source. If it was advertised and had marketing behind it, it would be even better. It would probably be a big competitor with windows. Its not that different to mac though, they are both UNIX based.

I experienced this on my Machine. The Network card which is Windows specific works better on Ubuntu. Firefox works better on my Ubuntu. My 20% connection is working like a 50% or 70% connection. I don't need freeking games like Halo or Left 4 Dead on a PC. Consoles is the perfect alternative to Windows.

I've seen about 7 of these "Linux is better than Windows" videos. All they show is Linux doing some pretty effects. Which really has nothing to do with computer efficiency.
I'm running Linux Mint 7 right now. I'm about to reinstall Windows XP on my laptop because this OS is slow as shit. Right after installing it, it was already freezing and what not. Its flash is terrible too. I can't even watch anything on Youtube in fullscreen.

What is this program that makes this box with other panels? I don't see it installed standard on Ubuntu.
I generally like Windows and dislike Apple, but after having a netbook come with Ubuntu, I must say it's a cool operating system. And yes, entirely free. The package manager has let me get every program I'd want for this little netbook, but as a full desktop, it would be limiting. Still, for a 1.6 ghz processor and 1GB RAM, it seems very lightweight and runs fast. And no viruses, woot!

it used to be called advanced desktop effects settings, but I think they changed it to compiz... something.
just search for "compiz" in package manager.

oh i should mention that them "cool" effects get really old fast, your not stairing at effects when you use your computer, you are focased on the application you are using, thats whats important

I do like it. But I hate the fact that the flash player is so terrible. Horrible colour palete, HQ and HD completely non-functional on YouTube, sound bar also non-functional. This is my biggest gripe right now next to not having a decent msn client.

i agree with many comments here that this is more eye candy then actually showing that it is better but i do thin ubuntu is better then windows. thats because ubuntu is fast and powerful. everything is open source and customizable. It is UNIX based which i like way better then Windows. Windows crashes and has problems and is just slow from my experience. Idk wutu guys think

You meant Ubuntu LOOKS better than Windows I do admit it looks better but no where near the same programming, to be honest windows is the easiest OS in the world Ubuntu is the oppisite non-user friendly and you can't hardly do anything on dumb linux if it werent for wine, which im sure microsoft will block somehow.
then what will Ubuntu be without wine...

Well no shit, if everyone used mac os x all the time it would be easier. But im saying, if your using windows for the FIRST time, its going to be harder than using Mac OS X for the first time. Or thats how it is for most people.

You realize Ubuntu itself has absolutely NOTHING to do with any of the things you showed right? Ubuntu is just Debian with a pkg management network. You can find all packages on regular Debian, Gentoo, Fedora, etc. Whatever. For anyone who knows Linux, Linux is fucking Linux. To claim one is better than the next is to be a dumbshit wannabe. Ubuntu is slower than Windows Vista.. it's supposed to be faster but it takes like 2 and a half mins to boot on my laptop with 1GB of RAM. Vista took 1 minute.

I use xubuntu on my P4 1.8 GHZ CPU with 500MB's ram and it is still slower then I would want it to be.

Uh, I have a netbook with 1GB RAM and a 1.6 ghz processor and Ubuntu takes like 20 seconds to boot up, if that. I would venture to say there is something corrupt with whatever copy of Ubuntu you had. I love Windows XP and have been using Ubuntu only a few weeks, but that boot time is ridiculous and not a fair measure of Ubuntu. I find it to be very fast.

I have a laptop with those exact specs, an Acer Aspire 5100, it sucks but Ubuntu is still way slower than Windows Vista, for me anyway

is there any way to install drivers (when i find them, i hope) without internet? i have the 3 versions of ubuntu but i can't install the drivers, because to install them you need internet so you need a modem, the modem needs a driver. empty circle

if you dont have modem drivers on a cd, then download them on the computer u used to type this.
