Due to the versatility of Japanese pronouns and honorifics a characters gender doesn't have to be specified. In English Envy is referred to as male just for convenience. Though I suppose the subbers and dubbers could refer to it as an it like I'm doing.

Envy is male; only his normal appearance seems partly male, partly female. Because he likes to look "cute." There's also that he's been voiced by a female.

In the first anime, Envy is created from Hohenheim's attempt to revive his son with Dante. Although the two animes are different, Envy is surely male. I can't think of Envy being female.

Then again, he's the most confusing character as he can assume any form of appearance as he wishes.

@roderickpass From what I understand, the original anime TV series, FMA, was made before the entire manga version was written. Therefore, it didn't follow the original manga version of the plot. FMA Brotherhood follows the original manga plot more closely. I haven't had time to read the manga yet, but that is what I've heard. Hope this helped!
