There are members of my family that are mormon, and they were really REALLY against this show, but then they saw it,and now they love it. Come on people, this is a really good show!
This is just rude. I'm not even mormon and I'm offended. What, since people are fresh out of high school they're naive and stupid? Two girls that were graduates at my school came back to visit. They were 23 and built an orphanage in Uganda. They weren't rich, or old, just determined. I love southpark, but this is just too far. To make fun of someone's religion like this. It's like bullying. I know it's all in good humor, but this doesn't seem right to me.
@kaylynnemglover They didn't, actually. Matt Stone and Trey Parker thoroughly researched the Mormon religion before writing this musical - along with growing up around tons of Mormons. People of the Mormon faith themselves have actually been impressed with how accurate this musical is - even though it seems to poke fun at times. It's not a musical just to tear down the Mormons. People *like* Mormons after seeing this musical... even the official LDS website said it was entertaining.
@SpasticFlailure My husband wrote on my account without logging out, so this was his comment not mine. We are, in fact, Mormons, though he is a convert and has relatively little experience dealing with the characteristic Mormon humor that I grew up with. He also wrote this before he went and did a little more research on it, and then he later agreed that it was harmless and entertaining. The main complaint I've heard is that they poke fun at things we take seriously and some can't laugh at it
@kaylynnemglover Oh, okay then. That makes a lot more sense. It's completely understandable that some people would be offended by parts of this musical.
@unclemike The statement my husband made was that they get "a lot of things" wrong, not all, so picking out one thing that is a "standard" practice in the church doesn't make the statement false. Be wary of reductio ad absurdum. But on the topic you mentioned, keep in mind that they aren't forced to go, so "sent" might not be the best word choice.
@theothersituation Oh, lol. Thats fine too , but smoking isn't good for your general health not just because the word of wisdom, and tattoos are cool, just dont get one of a girlfriend you might dump haha. :)
Ya know, even though they aren't completely accurate about all the details, viewers really should at least consider what the missionaries go through. I mean really, 19 years old boys (and 20 year old girls) going to a completely new world to teach total strangers about a faith that we know that people will ridicule us for?? I mean heck, whether or not youre mormon or agree with us or whatever you gotta admit that's pretty dang impressive!
... they should have research deeply about the LDS church.. not just what they saw or heard.. or maybe tried listening to the missionaries before coming out this show. i just saw few clips and interviews but many lines are not according to church practice.. like the district leader is the head of the mission.. you should have asked Mormon to read the script and edit some info... anyway, our missionary work will continue and No unhallowed hand can stop the work! goodluck...
I already kno this is a little untrue due to the fact that the creators of this were the creators of "south park"... I am LDS and at the tony award wen the guy said "i wanna thank our co writer, joseph smith... U did it, u got a tony..." I laughed a little, but I was mad and was like "wat the heck dude!" I am just 14 and still learning, so plz understand that mocking of my church will piss me off a little
@unclemike I guess because you are a hater. Just because you couldn't live up to the standards of the church you want to bring it down to your level, well that is just funny. When you lose a race, do you just sit around and tell everyone the race wasn't fair because you couldn't win? Either work to make yourself stronger, or accept you loss, it isn't the fault of the race, but yours.
lol we do change mission companions numerous times actually, but whatever. i find this humerous, and im lds sooo i dont think its TOO bad. in fact, the song "i believe" is pretty much accurate and i find that hilarious.
i am really opposed to this, i am a mormon, and i dont see why they have the right to talk about what goes on on a mission, how about they go on one then they can say something, my grandparents went on a mission to botswana, and they definitely have a lot different things to say about the african mission.
@bugboy619 So I guess that means every one who has wanted to write a book, or create a movie, or write music, has to experience what their creation is about. So I, guess Bram Stoker had a great time hanging out with Dracula and J.R. Tolkien with Bilbo and Frodo Baggins.
@fornido So because it's based on what actual people do it can't be parodied? They aren't mocking the mormon faith in this musical, but rather rejoicing it while parodying it at the same time. They actually incorporate a lot of the mormon faith and history into the play. You're complaining about how they don't understand what it is to go on a mission when you haven't even been on one, your grand parents have.
@VelaToNorma7 You're right. Why believe the Bible created approx. 2000 years ago, or The Book of Mormon created around 100 years ago when we can believe science books which were made 9000 years ago in Ancient Greece?
@VelaToNorma7 Anarchy huh? No law at all? Just live? Well I know a whole lot of people in prison who would agree with you. Of course that would completely annihilate civilization as we know it today. Religion was the first law, and most laws are still based upon that.
For those of you judging this magnificent show without even knowing what its about here's a first listen of the entire soundtrack: w w w.npr.org/2011/05/09/136054170/first-listen-cast-recording-the-book-of-mormon
I must admit my favorite song is : Hassa diga eebowai (tribal for "Fuck You God") enjoy it while you can.
District Leader is the "Head of the Mission." Haha, the only humor I'm finding is the lack of accuracy being shown here. This has nothing to do with the LDS church...
@lastpaganemperor but they present your religion as a hoax. how is that okay? they said that in the episode of south park that people are dumb for believing Joseph Smith and that he made it all up. and your okay with that? sure they didn't go into the mountain meadow massacre and the fact that Joseph Smith said in the book of Mormon to have no more than one wife but had several of his own, but I still can't see how a Mormon likes this.
@300daysandnights - Yeah, I'm OK with South Park and this Book of Mormon musical. I've lived over half my life in very hard core, Liberal, University communities and I am aware that the media, Hollywood, Broadway have been hard core anti Christian since about 1960 - so I'm not surprised or shocked that the LDS/Mormon church is made fun of.
But, once you get by the mocking - these South Park artists treat LDS people as kind, honest, good people and I appreciate their kindness. Thanks.

Sounds on balance very good.
I am an LDS convert and am a bit cautious on media mockery of our church.
I think the title is a bit offensive as it is supposed to be:
THE BOOK OF MORMON
And the musical doesn't have much to do for or against the Book of Mormon.
Outside of some curse words, if they gave the musical a new name - I would be very supportive of performing this musical in Salt Lake City.
Thanks for thinking of us and presenting our young people as good people.
God Bless
