  • great version better than the orginal

  • This seems to be a better version ?..Ha Ha...Damn Good as well.

  • What a brilliant version...

  • how did they decide who had to were the faggy gold outfits?

  • @mrjonz takes a real man with complete confidence in their maculinity, all three of them ooze pure sexuality and are comfortable with who they are....personally i love Johnny in his gold suit x

  • @noosmum , i agree , the guys look good , sing great , but that doesn't explain how they decide who wears the faggy pants

  • @mrjonz the ones with the best bodies of course!!!! or maybe the ones with the confidence to carry it off lol x

  • @mrjonz my pop was in a 50s group had a closet full of those suits korean vet badass

  • Johnny has the best voice, EVER!

  • Maybe the most visually entertaining video on YouTube. Brilliant. And of course, Johnny hits a home run vocally.

  • Great job, wonderful song, but shouldn't be carrying a spare tire around if your going to wear that gay outfit.

  • There has never been a better version of this song ever. Johnny takes it to the moon and back. The original can not compare.

  • cant decide weather i fancy him more "rough and ready" as in the concerts and live shows with his hair longer and the sideburns or the more slick approach of the tv series, i think i have to admit im totally totally hooked!!!

  • Simply AMAZING!

  • About as gay as it gets!!!

  • You can do it better?

    These guys are fantastic.

  • This is one of the best songs they do. Better than the original. What drama!

  • OK I admit it... my jaw dropped at the end when Johnny went on his back and hit that final note Sheesh! OK maybe I gasped, just a little ;-)

  • @MizKitty1122 No shit, to die for. Makes the original seem like child's play.

  • rich jofe does a couple of songs have you meet him

  • Does Rich Joffe have any solos on YouTube?

  • @zeker55 Theres no footage of Joffe on you tube or anywhere else with him

singing lead at the moment. In concert his songs were shake rattle and roll or

come go with me,to date theres just nothing out there available yet.

  • oh my god this is so cute and rich joffe is so cute

  • for me, the video portion was a little too melodramatic; however, the vocals are just absolutely great!

  • Be still my beating heart. Johnny pulls out all the stops on this one. How girls didn't rush the stage is beyond me. What a performance by our dear Johnny. Wrings the heart right out of you.

  • @Tonithenightowl

Ahh... You sure this is Johnny? The face is different (although that could be the mildly ridiculous sideburns) and the voice doesn't sound the same (could be my speakers). Well, if you're sure I'll take your word for it but... I need somebetter speakers lol

  • @Ironsouled It's Johnny or I am losing what little mind I have lol. I know his voice and that's Johnny's voice albeit the recording is tinny sounding with an echo. This was shot in Holland or Germany in the early 70's. I can see where you may have thought this because I wasn't sure at first either. I think they all got a makeover for the show and Johnny's look became more polished. If I'm wrong maybe someone here can enlighten us. Anyone??

  • @Ironsouled It's definitely Johnny. His hace is the same, though the hair is different. But Johnny's falsetto is unmistakeable.

  • @silarnon Good, then I know I'm not nuts lol. I have listened to Johnny enough to know his voice and you are right, unmistakeable. The sideburns and hair threw me off at first too. I'm sure they didn't have the makeup jobs, the perfect lighting and sound like they did on the TV show either. They ended up with a much more polished look on TV.

  • rich joffe hes a cutie wondering why he left

  • When music was something you could enjoy. Great job.

  • Love this clear video ..... wonderful!!!

  • This was before Sha na na came on TV. Johnny of course is brilliant even with those sideburns lol They were on TV from 77 to 81 and Sha na na had the highest ratings in their time slot. I am so thankful we can relive those shows with Youtube,

  • Is this at Channel 4 in Burbank? If so, I'm in the audience.

  • My favorite but anything Johnny sings is always sends a tingle up the spine!!! He doesn't just sing he performs a song and you can feel it!!!!!

  • has anyone read about this song?

where is the closing segment for the show?

  • @TEMPmichaelhansen

No I haven't. What is the story behind it - do you know, or were you asking for the information? I really do wish they would run the series on TV Land for a while. I miss the skits, the guests, and everything. It was such a great show. I'm just so glad that someone was thoughtful enough to bring it onto youtube.

  • @TheLadyanwyn

this is one of those teen tragedy songs, listed in a book and described, ect...i remember watching the tv show when I was 3 years old. the things you remember in abstract...

  • funny....this would be considered gay today...........

  • @jaibobro I strongly doubt if any of these members were queers.

  • @jaibobro Not even close. Granted it's cornball but it was a family show so bear that in mind. The music and vocals were superb. People of all ages could enjoy it. Guess you have to be old enough to understand that concept.

  • This song always makes me cry; and I'm a tough, leather jacket, wearing punk rock drummer. This is the best version.

  • WOW! This song is really terrific. I continue to be really impressed with Johnny's voice and performance skills. If he had been born earlier he would have been a terrific solo artist. I certainly enjoy all the Sha Na Na performances he is in! Thanks for uploading.

  • Where can I get a copy of this concert?

  • @finestsounds I found a great dvd of this concert on ebay from a German company but I think it's kind of rare for them to show up. Just keep searching the net.

  • Nice better than Ray Petersons sappy studio 50's version. Always thought it could have been done better and it was, here . Guy's, you don't have to bother reading the rest of the coments they are all about Johnny Contardos underwear , well I mean't 'guys'.

  • the best ever..i remember them cause my mom named me after this song

  • me too!

  • That back bend he does at the end just kills me !! My mind drops right into the gutter when I see that..lol

  • @sweetipie1965 I agree 100%, but it is truly amazing how he holds that note from that position... OMG!!! I get chills every time...

  • DERedhead65, I agree. He was my first crush, and if I'm honest, I still have a crush on him to this day. It's his voice...I can't explain it, I just adore the sound of his voice...Oh, and let's not forget those eyes...He is truly THUD worthy on this song and on You Are My Destiny

  • I loved the whole group here of Sha Na Na, but have to admit, I was always in LUST with Johnny... dreamy lol and WHAT A VOICE, he could CROON to me anytime!

    ♪≈♫≈♥≈♪≈♫

  • I wish there was a video of Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids doing this song. They did a great version of it.

  • i don't know english language, amateur recording.

I love song TELL LAURA and J, LEYTON & SHA NA NA

  • I know I've already commented on this but... I see London I see France I see Johnny's sexy black underpants!!! LOL

  • Alot of women have wanted to see Johnny's undies!

  • For sure! And there they are!!! LOL

  • now i'm visualizing Johnny in a black speedo.

  • dont think so lol

  • Ty..

I remember watching this version on the Mike Douglas Show years ago.

  • I think John Layton´s version is the best!

  • A few of the songs Sha Na Na does are better than the originals and this is one of them.

  • Damn right!

  • @hubiethesaint

I don't know about this one necessarily, but there are definitely some songs that they did better than the originals' in my opinion as well. I'm glad to see someone else agrees. Thanks. :-)

  • Johnnie has a better voice than most of the originals.

  • @steven8124 I always wondered why after ShaNaNa he didn't keep singing?

  • I could never understand why only three of them wore the gold outfits.

  • only for woman...hell yeah it´s unbelievable sexy ;-)

  • The dance moves and the tight tight gold pants really kill me hahaha but I love Johnny Contardo's voice and Sha na na's sense of humour :)

  • this is the gayest video ever. good song though. lol.

  • Once again, Johnny sings to perfection!

  • Nice glimpse of Johnny's undies! ;)

  • Well, I see where your mind is. LOL

  • Comment removed

  • Where it always is! ;) It's the only thing that can take my eyes off of his face. (OK, maybe not the ONLY thing LOL).

  • I noticed that too! Ohh Yeah!!

  • Tuppy, we have some competition in this Wendy. It is great to meet another Johnny maniac that understands our undying lust (oh I meant love LOL)love and devotion to this man!!

  • What can I say, we've got great taste! LOL. He's just so yummy, I want to bite him!!! Not too hard, of course ;)

  • No, it's lust, too! LOL

  • Well ok, I guess you twisted my arm!! Yeah, its lust too!! Lets add want, need, desire, obsess, and any others you can think of. Oh Johnny, what you do to us!!!

  • Oh, I've notice that. I just saw the "bite him" comment. haha! That's right up there with riding the rail. LOL!!

  • HAHAHAHA!!! If I had gotten to read that comment, I'd have given Skippy a thumbs up for that!!! That's hilarious!

  • They so beautifully spoofed all the hit songs. Great shows.

  • Johnny Contardo will always be Tommy when I picture this song in my head

  • Comment removed

  • I remember this, when I use to watch this show.

  • Badass song!!!!

  • love this song...nice version.....still tryin to find their version of del shannon's 'runaway'...its on the sha na now album. anyone?

  • try Bearshare or Bit Torrent. "Runaway" is sang by Elliot(Gino) Cahn.

  • Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness baby! Look into it!

  • Bowser!

  • so you think bowser is cute i meet rich joffe oh man

  • I didn't say that, lol

  • sorry who do you think is cute.. mine is rich joffe he is so nice and sweet..

  • proof whites can dance as good as blacks.

  • @scorzeny45 They've even got a black guy with them! :D

  • NOW, they have this junk called RAP and GRINDING and DUMPING (something like that) NOISE! NONE of it makes sense. THIS is what we can make sense.of! REAL WORLD WORDS that do not require censors.

  • Damn, Johnny just makes me melt! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

  • he has an awesome voice and so cute have you meet any of the band

  • my sweet heart dedicated this song to me love it

  • I saw these guys at the Reading Blues Festival in 1971 - totally inappropriate audience but they stole the show didn't hear much about them after.

  • those gold suits and genie like dance moves rocks!

  • your name is gay!

  • Talk about a career reversal! Dr. Scott "Santini" Powell traded in his lame' for a medical career - orthopedic surgeon, no less, in CA!

  • Did anyone ever notice how much Johnny and Billy Crystal looked alike. Check out the young Johnny on the Official ShaNaNa website with the afro.

  • Funny s__t. They loved all those kids running around killing themselves in their cars back then. Sha Na Na started the 50's revival and IT JUST WON'T DIE but is on life support.

  • OMG, AWESOME.... My heart pounds at every note...

  • HEY ITS ROB SCHNIEDER SINGING !!!

  • man check the side burns out mmm crazy back than for sure

  • This song always made me cry when I was a teenager!

  • This is Sha Na Na when there line up was the best. Live and rock'in. The TV show was good but live is where it was at. Enjoy for what it was.

  • I saw them do "Laura" at the Avalon Ballroom in the late 60s. Laughed our asses off!

  • Remember people that this is live, not their TV show playback!!!!

  • i really love this song...people dun knw bout this song just shut up!!!!!

  • wtf are you ppl talking about the T.V. show rocked. That is what i am showing my grandbaby.

  • OMG i luv this site. XOX my kids rule.

  • At 2:48 Johnny hits the guy.

  • Anyone remember the ShaNaNa television show? Pretty cool.

  • @raceygofast I loved the show. I wish it were on DVD.

  • @raceygofast

Oh yes! How could I forget Sha Na Na? They were so great!

  • @raceygofast

    yes

  • they look gay , but this is good music

  • Lotta pickle smuggling going on in this video...

  • How did you get this? This is marvelous!!! Thank you.

  • Funny how this one got so stretched out -- Santini looks about 7 feet tall, and Johnny looks even thinner than usual. Love it, though!

  • Santini is on the right of the "gold boys"

  • i use to watch this all the time when i was a teenager...my wife never heard of SHA NA NA....WTF?......they rock

    ........

  • Sha Na Na is the fucking bomb. Dude they ruled the fucking 80s!

  • ARRGH! Why do my replies never come up where they should? I was answering Dawn1959's question about the guy in the white shirt behing Santini! This is irritating.

  • I love this song but it only makes me cry when Johnny sings it. I guess because I love him and he sounds so genuinely broken hearted. By the way - these clips from before they had their show are great. Thanks for posting!

  • i was born in 1992 i love all the oldies and i saw them it was so much fun

  • Everything you hear on the radio today, started with this music! Sha Na Na are responsible for introducing generations of new fans to the doo wop era!

You want poop? Check between your ears!

  • Like this song

  • Still can't believe Johnny hit the last note in that position.

  • Dawn-that is vinnie taylor in the background unfortunaly he died of a heroin overdose in 1974 and Chico died around 1988-but they still tour!!

  • Isnt Vinnie in the white shirt behind Santini?

  • That's Rich Joffe. He was an original member and left not long after this (1968 - 1973). He's a lawyer in New York now. I always thought he was kinda cute - big bushy mustache and all.

  • Thanks for this...never fails to make me cry. Love it. Grease for Peace! :)

  • OHHHH Johnny Contardo is hot,I didnt know Vinnie had died,I knew that Chico died.I loved watching them, this is my favorite of all.You would be suprised what these guys are doing now.Wow,just read that Vinnie died of herion overdose, how sad.Grease for Peace.

  • YOu WISH you sucked that bad! They're all millionaires because they suck so bad! Another talentless schmuck heard from!

  • "can you play 'tell laura i love her?'"

"well..uh..no. but ive been working on this one." (plays magic changes)

    from grease musical :)

    good voice

  • If this was 1973 than it was right before Vinnie Taylor died, probably one of his last perfrmances with the group. thanks for the video, always one of my favorites by SHA NA NA

  • I cannot believe I found this. I used to never, ever miss The Sha Na Na show (in reruns) in the 80's. I was a teenager and TOTALLY in love with Johnny. He could sing this song and Teen Angel both and make me cry every time. My husband and children thought I had lost my mind I was sooo excited. Thank you for posting this.

  • As a young girl I never missed their show. Yes, they were goofy...but oh so wonderful. They truly loved the music and made me love it to.

  • I watch a video like this and find it hard to believe I am older now than they were when they made it, especially 21-year-old Johnny. What a voice even then. Thankfully it hasn't changed in 35 years since (1973-the year I was born).

  • Somebody said Sha Na Na was a "goof group." I guess you're right. Bowser and those costumes were just plain silly. But they never gave an inch on a single note. Their love of the the song, the story and the music of the 50's pulls, at least, at my heart. I haven't heard "Tell Laura I Love Her" since I was 12. I still think it's great.

  • Johnny totally looks like Billy Crystal

  • I saw my 1st. Sha na na concert when I was 2 years old! Does anyone know which one of their albums had this song. I used to have it on 8 track tape! It's my favorite song & I can't find it!

  • It's on Rock N' Roll is Here to Stay.

  • Its not on this album. Its actually on Golden

Age of Rocknroll (1972) and Sha na na (1971)

  • It's funny you would say that, as I checked on my cassette before I posted. I just looked again, and it IS on Rock N' Roll is Here to Stay, unless somehow there are different versions, and I kind of doubt that there are.

  • Hi Lorjokr, its certainly not on their 1st album issued in 1969 "Rock n Roll is Here to Stay".Is the album/cd you have one of the dozens of compilations issued in the 1980s taken from a few of their original albums?

  • My cassette shows a copyright of 1988, which explains the descrepancy. It's just odd that the title would be the same, with different songs. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

  • It was on "Sha Na Na". Recorded live at Columbia University NYC around about 1972. I think that was the best live version sound wise. "Duke of Earl" on the same album was also brilliant. The flip side of the album was there own songs---Country style.

  • It was on their second album released in the UK and had a chair with a Gold Lame jacket draped over it. The A side of the album was a show recorded live at NYC Columbia University. Great show. Tell Laura I love Her was on other early albums though. Wolgangs Vault has some SHANANA concerts available and registration is free.

  • This was the very first song I heard Johnny sing and I've been hooked ever since. What an amazing talent!!!!

  • De kleding is geen gezicht.....maar de muziek is geweldig.

  • johnny was great singer...trying hitting that last note in the prone position..amazing...dumb chorograph though..but it was the 70s

  • I'd like to see him do that over my coffee table....Oh No I feel a hot flash coming on..

  • It's a Spoof Groug

    suposed to be corny

  • That must have been a very hard position in which to sing. Of course, Johnny does it to perfection, as usual. And what about that torso? Ooo, whee!

  • I love this song!

I named my daughter after this song.

  • man.... u know a song is old when people can wear clothes like that and not have some1 come up on the stage and slap them! lol! awesome song, good voice, terrible suits.... and sideburns.. rofl

  • Freddie Mercury would be proud of that 'big finish' choreography! awesome!

You gotta LOVE those gold suits.

  • this and teen angel were the most depressing songs ever written

  • Yes, they are very sad songs, but both have been sung beautifully by the amazingly talented Johnny Contardo. Keep up the great work, Johnny. We love you!

  • I replied to brabon, don't know why these aren't showing as responses to the right people. Sorry.

  • Greatest version of this classic song.

    Even superior to J.Frank Wilson's.

    Grease For Peace!

  • Sorry, Judicannon, but it wasn't J. Frank Wilson who recorded this. It was Ray Peterson. J. Frank Wilson did a cheap rip-off version called "Last Kiss" He had a hit with it, but everyone who knew Rock history knew it was a knock-off of Peterson's song which will always be one of the genre's biggest.

  • i see gay people O_O
